POPSMarin Urban Search & Rescue Team: Ready, willing, and able To paraphrase Firefly , "What's that make them? Big damn heroes! " More: They can't just roll the pipes off because its likely there will be so much debris in a real disaster that rolling will be impossible. Instead they inflate rubber and kevlar bags, sort of ultra-balloons. The bags are attached to an air tank and when inflated, can support a huge amount of weight ranging from two tons with the smaller bag to a mammoth 37 tons using the large bag! It takes about ten minutes to free the 'grateful' dummy. The collaborative training provided by Novato Fire District, Marin USAR and the State of California Office of Emergency Services, mirrors the collaboration in the field. When disaster strikes, multiple agencies respond and they need to work seamlessly together. That's why this type of training is so important.

POPSWhat Does It Mean To Be A Survivalist? More @ source. The feeling of needing to prepare to ensure yours and your families survival is one that is on the rise so lets take a glimpse a just what it means. For me at least It means you might stay alive as the whole world circles the drain, or that being in a more stable position, you are able to help others who are not so well prepared when disaster strikes. On a basic level think of it like this, if you were going camping would you leave with no equipment or supplies, of course not, not if you intend to live. So what happens when nature comes to you? It could be a quake, a tornado, a hurricane or typhoon, or floods or even any number of human caused events, how will your Ikea flat pack fortress protect you then?

POPSUp to 4,000 buried in Indonesian quake rubble "Aftershocks can be just as devastating as the initial quake," said Adjie Fachrurrazi, emergency response coordinator in Indonesia for the CARE aid organization, in a statement. "After an earthquake of this size, we know the immediate needs are going to be getting safe water, food and emergency supplies to the survivors. The question now is: How bad is it? We're hoping for the best, but the information so far is not looking good."

POPSIndonesia quake toll soars past 500 The U.S. Geological Survey declined to say whether the two quakes were linked. "The simple answer is we can't speculate on a connection," said Carrieann Bedwell of the USGS. "Both are in highly seismic areas." POPSHumans Are As Leaves Of One Branch If you are hung over in an anguished sense after seeing the display of anti-Semitic leaders at the United Nations this past week, there is hope, but I admit, there are times when I lose some hope that the world's future will be a peaceful one. I'm tired of the Jew-hating, the Jew-baiting that has gone on for so many generations. As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked, "Have you no shame." Let me repeat that: HAVE YOU NO SHAME, you criminals sitting here? Have you no shame for your crimes against humanity? Is it not a crime against humanity to call for the extermination of an entire nation comprised mostly of our fellow brothers and sisters who happen to be Jewish? I'm sick of it. Anger, yes, and then I reflect that, if we are all leaves of one branch, branches of one tree, that ultimately humanity will awaken to its unity in its diversity. And, rather than kill, murder, maim, imprison, torture and rape in the name of "religion," we can l

POPSNew data: Mega-quake could strike near Seattle
The instruments are detecting an inch or two of movement — known as "episodic tremor and slip" — as the Juan de Fuca plate grinds and sinks beneath the North American plate. Closer to the surface, the two plates are locked together. When they snap, scientists say, it could produce a massive 9.0 or greater earthquake and a tsunami. By comparison, the largest earthquake ever recorded was 9.5 on the Richter scale, in Chile in 1960. The largest in North America was the 9.2 Great Alaska Earthquake in 1964, which killed nine people and spawned a tsunami that struck the Northwest coast. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which killed 750 to 2,500 people, was estimated to be an 8.2. Whereas the scientists once predicted that a mega-earthquake would be centered just off the Northwest coast, now — using data from the tremors research — they say that it could be 30 miles or more inland, under the Olympic Peninsula , which lies to the west of Seattle and Tacoma across Puget Sound . "The c

POPSDownload Black Dynamite Movie What I found most appealing about Black Dynamite is that, while it will certainly strike a chord with the old-school blaxploitation fans, the flick also works on its own as a very broad, very goofy, and (yep) very clever little satire.

POPSDozens of Jumbo Squid Beached After Quake--Coincidence? Like whale and dolphin strandings, the causes of squid beachings are a mystery. One theory is that the squid can be disoriented by rapidly changing water temperatures. "The water temperature has been a little weird lately," Staaf said. "If the squid were in really warm water, but then it suddenly got very cold, that could be confusing for them." Another possibility is that the beached squid had ingested dangerous amounts of a toxin called domoic acid.

POPSOn Wed, July 22, 2009 a TOTAL ECLIPSE of the Sun..
This from the July 15, 2009 Survival Center Newsletter: There are 3 eclipses in a row. The 1st just happened - a partial lunar eclipse in the sign of Sagittarius on July 7th. The 2nd is a total solar eclipse in the sign of Cancer on July 22nd. And the 3rd is another partial lunar eclipse in the sign of Capricorn on August 6th. The 2 lunar eclipses are expected to be minor both in terms of astrology and astronomy- they won’t be visibly obvious at all, so they’re not believed to have any big impact on those of us down here. Though the lunar eclipses won’t be all that impactful the solar eclipse will, and it will be visible to millions of people in Asia and the Pacific. Just in: On Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 04:22:32 AM (CDT) a great shallow magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred on a ridge between Australia and Antarctica: "..the earthquake having resulted from slip on the subduction thrust interface between the Pacific and Australian plates."
