"The Artist in Chief" and "Navigating the Art of Change”
merrie
by merrie  10-29-2009    1
To borrow a line from the Artist in Chief, I’m “fired up and ready to go.” Am I starting to sound like an advocate? Well, that seems to be a touchy subject. Some quote-unquote “journalists” have recently accused this agency of losing its independence and becoming a propaganda machine. While I want to state in no uncertain terms that the NEA is not a political agency and that when art becomes propaganda I lose all interest in it, I also want everyone to know that the days of a defensive NEA are over. We have a plan and we are going to, quote, “advocate” for it. Remember, please, that the NEA is an unusual agency within the federal government. We have always been considered the champions of the arts and artists in the public sector. In a sense, we do “advocate” for them in a way that the IRS doesn’t advocate for taxes or the FCC for bandwidth. We promote the arts. Health Care Trading Cards: Collect 'Em All!
merrie
by merrie  8-18-2009    1
Wondering who gets what out of the Democrat Party's push for single-payer, socialized medicine? Keep tabs on all the cash changing hands with this exclusive collection of Health Care Trading Cards™! "What Obama didn’t say is that AARP receives millions in federal funds, and hopes to get even more by becoming a vendor under his plan. In January 2007, NLPC published Special Report documenting taxpayer support for AARP. The study found that federal funding accounted for $83 million, or about 10 percent, of AARP’s then-annual revenue of $878 million." Unaccountable politicians -- who have come out and said they don't give a crap what their constituents think -- will amass more power, further breakdown the firewalls in the Constitution and then walk away. And where will Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid be in ten years, when the rest of us are struggling with a massive, out-of-control, federalized medical system that doesn't give a damn . . .

From Alinsky to Axelrod: Pro-ObamaCare Protesters Were Bused In for NH Town Hall
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2009    1
One of Obama's early mentors in the Alinsky method was Mike Kruglik, who had this to say to an Ryan Lizza of The New Republic, about Obama: "He was a natural, the undisputed master of agitation, who could engage a room full of recruiting targets in a rapid-fire Socratic dialogue, nudging them to admit that they were not living up to their own standards. As with the panhandler, he could be aggressive and confrontational. With probing, sometimes personal questions, he would pinpoint the source of pain in their lives, tearing down their egos just enough before dangling a carrot of hope that they could make things better." The agitator's job, according to Alinsky, is first to bring folks to the "realization" that they are indeed miserable, that their misery is the fault of unresponsive governments or greedy corporations, then help them to bond together to demand what they deserve...

Scroogle review on Cnet.com
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-3-2009
"Over 130,000 searches per day are made through the Scroogle site, 10 percent of which use SSL. In an e-mail conversation, Daniel told me that his "ultimate goal is for Scroogle to survive long enough so that the public sector gets the idea that all major search engines should be treated like public utilities." Daniel Brandt seems like a great guy. He's doing this for free--and accepts tax deductible donations on the Scroogle site. However, for users who don't trust Daniel's claims, they may wish to use the anonymizing TOR proxy in parallel with Scroogle. What Daniel's site shows, is that privacy preserving search is possible. While Scroogle doesn't show any ads, if Google offered this service, they could still make a buck on it. Imagine that--making money, while not being evil. Disclosure: I'm paid as a technology policy fellow by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a public interest group that has repeatedly criticized Google for its privacy policies. Furthermore, I i

Senate Panel Passes Health Bill
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2009    2
One Democratic aide said the bill would add up to $1.5 trillion over the next decade. But the CBO estimate showed that even if the price tag holds to $1 trillion, more than 80 percent of the costs will hit in the last five years. This indicates that after 2019, taxpayers could be hit with a rising tidal wave of health care expenses resulting from the shift in health care coverage from the private to public sector. Amid those staggering estimates, advocates and foes of such a plan are facing off in a pitched battle on Capitol Hill, coinciding with the tame-by-comparison drama of Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court confirmation hearing. "This bill has massive spending and massive tax increases to try to cover the spending in the bill," Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., said at a press conference with other congressional Republicans Tuesday, complaining about a provision in the House bill to tax the wealthy. "Half of that will be hit on small businesses."

If referred to a specialist, your wait may be six months or longer. You can elect to fly abroad for treatment if you can't wait, but since health care is free in the U.S. (and private doctors are banned), most elect to wait. Retirees have a very high quality of life. However, due to rules prescribed by the Federal Health Board, if you are over 72 years of age, you may not receive treatment for Cancer, Heart Disease and other maladies because those services are reserved for younger, healthier patients. It's true that we seem poorer, less employed, less happy, less healthy, less educated, and -- I'll say it -- less free. But that's what we voted for when we voted for change. We were voting for an ideal, a Utopia, a vision of equality. And now that we're entering Barack Obama's fourth term in office, many would say we've achieved it.

Pension experts say the government should do more to reduce public sector retirement perks. Ros Altmann, a former adviser on pensions to Tony Blair, said: “The number in the public sector will rise in the years ahead, not least because pay levels have risen sharply in the public sector in recent years. The burden of paying these very generous pensions will fall on taxpayers for generations to come.”
