US Health Tech for Licensing - Interested?
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  11-12-2009
Our tax dollars pay for all sorts of inventions, research, etc. All of it may be licensed and sold for a profit and/or improved upon. These are healthcare related - so there is one on a different treatment for AIDS and another for a different way to isolate viruses for vaccine production. Not exactly money for nothing but one of the users reading this might be in the market - eh?

Parallels to Obamamania in ABC's "V" Sci-Fi Mini-Series
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009
An excerpt from Garvin's Sunday, November 1 Miami Herald review (“'V': The saucer-shaped bandwagon”), which the Chicago Tribune headlined “'V' aims at Obamamania.” Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care. The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don't you show some respect?!!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”

Republicans and Democrats saw opportunities to create new sources of campaign contributions by privatizing as many military functions as possible. There are now a large number of private companies that have never made a dollar in the market, feeding instead at the public trough that drains taxpayers of dollars while loading Americans with debt service obligations.

Lower costs with more administration
gemfemfox
by gemfemfox  11-5-2009
I have owned, ran and worked for a number of small, and a couple large, businesses in my career. I can honestly think of NO instance where hiring thousands of people, especially unionized, paid-for-life government workers, could lower costs for anyone. Even at 1900+ pages, it doesn't cover HALF the uninsured. This is success? Wake up people before 20% of your wages are stolen for shoddy "care."

as he handed out yellow flags with “Don't tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room of the St. John's Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was waiting to be treated for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face that he suffered in the attack. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack started. It just seems there's no freedom of speech without being attacked,” he said." The fact that Gladney was selling flags is not in question here. That was well-known. What is at issue here is the beating, not what Ken was selling. GWP scooped the story http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/

from staunch critics of illegal immigration. Open-borders groups have sought to marginalize, criminalize, and demonize those of us who have raised our voices for years about lax immigration enforcement " and to impose an Orwellian Fairness Doctrine-style policy on illegal alien amnesty opponents. During the presidential campaign, the National Council of La Raza launched a “We Can Stop the Hate” project to redefine tough policy criticism from the Right as “hate.” Unsurprisingly, far Left billionaire George Soros’s money is backing the “So We Might See”/National Hispanic Media Coalition effort. And remember that the Soros-funded Center for American Progress has provided the Obama White House with its Fairness Doctrine-embracing “diversity czar,” Mark Lloyd. Jeffrey Lord, who happens to belong to the United Church of Christ, reported in the American Spectator that not long after that speech, the UCC sent out a mass e-mail to its millions of members urging them.......

British High Court rejects U.S./British cover-up of torture evidence
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-17-2009
Yesterday, in a 38-page decision (.pdf), the Court reversed itself, and ruled that these paragraphs detailing Mohamed's torture should be publicly disclosed. It did so by making clear that, in essence, it simply did not believe that the U.S. would meaningfully reduce intelligence sharing; understood the Obama statements to be made at the request of British officials as a meaning of justifying ongoing concealment; interpreted the Obama administration to say only that disclosure "could" lead to reductions in intelligence-sharing, not that it "would"; and, most of all, that there are vital public interests that outweigh the minimal risk that the U.S. would withhold evidence of a terrorist plot from Britain as punishment for disclosure.

Former Secret Service Tell-All: Jimmy Carter a Fake, Phony, Liar
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-15-2009    2
Not surprising to me, but Reagan and Bush got the best reviews...the nicest. Read it and weep: http://www.northstarnational.com/2009/10/14/secret-service-agent-opens-window-private-lives-presidents/ Carter “didn’t want the police officers and agents looking at him or speaking to him when he went to the office,” explained an assistant White House usher. “The only time I saw a smile on Carter’s face was when the cameras were going,” one former agent told Kessler. After his presidency, Kessler reports that when Carter would stay at a townhouse maintained for former presidents in D.C., he would take down pictures of other presidents and put up more pictures of himself! “The Carters were the biggest liars in the world,” one agent told Kessler of the Carter era. Not surprising, liberals say they're for the common man; in an episode of Fringe maybe.

Obama's Senior Moment

voluntary private contracts and rationing via government. An Atlantic Ocean, in fact. Virtually every European government with "universal" health care restricts access in one way or another to control costs, and it isn't pretty. The British system is most restrictive, using a black-box actuarial formula known as "quality-adjusted life years," or QALYs, that determines who can receive what care . If a treatment isn't deemed to be cost-effective for specific populations, particularly the elderly, the National Health Service simply doesn't pay for it. Even France"which has a mix of public and private medicine "has fixed reimbursement rates since the 1970s and strictly controls the use of specialists and the introduction of new medical technologies such as CT scans and MRIs. Yes, the U.S. "rations" by ability to pay (though in the end no one is denied actual care). This is true of every good or service in a free economy and a world of finite resources . . .
