New row over Colombia-US accord
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-5-2009
Venezuela has broken off diplomatic relations with Bogota and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has warned that Colombian military bases could be used by the US to attack his country. Other countries in the region, including Brazil and Chile, have also expressed concern. The BBC's Jeremy McDermott, in Colombia, says Colombia is increasingly isolated in the region, but does not seem to care, just so long as it has US support.

Saudi Royal Air Force carries strikes against Yemeni rebels
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-5-2009    1
The same dynamic has played out in various forms in Lebanon, where Iran supports the Shiite militant Hezbollah and Saudi Arabia favors a U.S.-backed faction, and in Iraq, where Saudi Arabia and Iran have thrown support to conflicting sides in the Sunni-Shiite struggle. A top Saudi government adviser confirmed "a large scale" military operation underway on the Saudi-Yemeni border with further reinforcements sent to the rugged, mountainous area. "It is a sustained operation which aims to finish this problem on our border," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. He said Saudi troops were coordinating with Yemen's army, but Yemen's defense ministry denied the Saudis were inside the country. The northern rebels, known as Hawthis, have been battling Yemeni government forces the past few months in the latest flare-up of a sporadic five-year conflict. They claim their needs are ignored by a Yemeni government that is increasingly allied wit

The Sordid Story Of A Global Con ~ (Warming)
merrie
by merrie  10-4-2009    1
The second was a tree ring curve from the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia, compiled by UK scientist Keith Briffa. Briffa had published a paper in 1995 claiming that the medieval period actually contained the coldest year of the millennium. But this claim depended on just three tree ring records (called cores) from the Polar Urals. Later, a colleague of his named F. H. Schweingruber produced a much larger sample from the Polar Urals, but it told a very different story: The medieval era was actually quite warm and the late 20th century was unexceptional. Briffa and Schweingruber never published those data, instead they dropped the Polar Urals altogether from their climate reconstruction papers. In its place they used a new series that Briffa had calculated from tree ring data from the nearby Yamal Peninsula that had a pronounced Hockey Stick shape: relatively flat for 900 years then sharply rising in the 20th century. … But an even more disquieting discovery soon came t

Passport Proxy
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-16-2009    1
It’s a good idea to not flash your official passport in situations where a copy will do. It’s as wise as keeping your real social security card under lock and key until you need it for official purposes. A copied passport is not a forged document. One commenter said: In NZ, it is illegal (you could be fined $10,000 or 3 months imprisonment) for colour copying a passport, bank notes or other offical documents.

Guarantor Loans
entseo
by entseo  9-10-2009
Now for some good news, for a change. Guarantor loans are a great way to repair your credit rating. Because they involve somebody with an existing credit profile which is average to good, and because they are associated with the name of the applicant rather than the person guaranteeing the agreement, the enhanced creditworthiness will rub off on the person who takes out the loan, and this is especially useful if one's rating has tumbled as a result of recent and current fallout from the worsened economy. It is particularly useful in cases where people have lost their jobs through no fault of their own and who have become blacklisted as a result of no longer being able to pay their bills.

Judge Seeks Answers on SEC Deal With Bank of America
merrie
by merrie  8-26-2009    1
In a court filing Monday, the SEC said Bank of America executives relied on advice from outside counsel, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. The agency said it had no evidence that the executives sought to mislead shareholders and could not investigate whether they did so without Bank of America waiving its attorney-client privilege, which the bank did not do. "If the SEC is right in this assertion, it would seem that all a corporate officer who has produced a false proxy statement need offer by way of defense is that he or she relied on counsel, and, if the company does not waive the privilege, the assertion will never be tested, and the culpability of both the corporate officer and the company counsel will remain beyond scrutiny," Rakoff wrote Tuesday. Rakoff also raised the possibility that the lawyers could be held responsible. The settlement "leaves open the question of whether, if it was actually the lawyers who made the decisions that resulted in a false proxy statement,

PepsiCo Chooses to Continue Using GE Ingredients Despite Evidence of Harm
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-24-2009    6
The list of evil corporations grows longer. What else would you label a corporation that continues to use ingredients proven to cause toxicity in the kidney and liver? They sure as hell cannot be considered beneficial or benevolent. US law does not require GE foods be tested for toxicity so PepsiCo will continue to use the material without conscience. To quote Pepsi's response to the proposal: "We believe that genetically-modified products can play a role in generating positive economic, social and environmental contributions to societies around the world; particularly in times of food shortages." PepsiCo’s belief system (making money no matter what) doesn’t fit in with lab test results therefore disregard the tests. Incredibly, Monsanto had this to say: "Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job." That’s my definition of an evil corporation.

Hugo Chavez of Venuzuela: New Laws: Saint or Sinner?
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  8-15-2009    4
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is a very interesting person, making profound changes in his nation and strong in his opposition to many U.S. policies. He's in the headlines today for new laws that cut out state support for Catholic education in the schools, introduction of "socialist doctrine," (about'The Liberator', Simón Bolívar), restrictions on hostile media and (gasp!) rights of the government to expropriate property. He opposes Israeli policies of warmongering, apartheid and genocide, is not only forming alliances with Russian and Iran but is building up a substantial coalition of Central and South American countries. The clip here is about the U.S. now planning to put "troops on the ground in Columbia," - (after a lifetime of covert military actions --- Columbia is one of the USA proxy armies in the region). He's also called George Bush the Devil (good for him) and he disdains the game of golf (probably shouldn't have mentioned this). Saint or Sinner? ¿Otro
