Draconian drug tests The new welfare reform bill gives unprecedented new powers to Jobcentre staff
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  9-30-2009
There are further concerns about rights and liberties. For the first time Jobcentres will be able to share information with the police, the probation service and "others" to check the "accuracy" of information provided by the claimant. This could include information about drug-testing on arrest, court orders and sentencing and substance-related treatment received in prison or the community. While the bill protects against evidence acquired by Jobcentres being used in criminal proceedings against the claimant, the information sharing is two-way with no obvious barrier preventing the police using the information to prompt or inform a line of inquiry or criminal investigation.

COERCIVE CARE: Real Concerns About the Health Care Bill, The Tyranny of Good Intentions
blueridge
by blueridge  8-12-2009    1
The health care bill is all about Federal control over every "free" American. Insurance would be mandatory and compulsory and the government gives you "options" through coercion, including the IRS leaning on you ("penalty") if you try to "opt out" and retain your basic human rights, i.e. private property (how you spend your own money), control of your body, and freedom of choice. Then your entire privacy is jeapordized as the Federal government becomes your legal guardian and Nanny, supervising, monitoring, and tracking (in real electronic time) every health procedure and examination of every minutia of your life. So much for "freedom" then. Moreover, information is power, and this personal information on you provides the government the means of coercing you into what Big Brother thinks is "in your best interest", i.e. really the interest of the Collectivist State. A Healthcare National ID card has been discussed. The principle is nothing other than Communism.

GOP Senator: White House Encroaching on First Amendment
merrie
by merrie  8-5-2009    6
I suspect that you would have been leading the charge in condemning such a program -- and I would have been at your side denouncing such heavy-handed government action.” Yesterday, White House director of new media Macon Phillips wrote a blog posting urging readers to flag questionable claims about health care proposals. “There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.” Cornyn specifically asks whether those who quote the president’s past statements -- such as his 2003 statement that he was a “proponent” of single-payer care -- qualifies as . . .

Souter With A Salsa Beat?
merrie
by merrie  5-28-2009    1
Now, some abortion rights advocates are quietly expressing unease that Judge Sotomayor may not be a reliable vote to uphold Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 abortion rights decision. In a letter, Nancy Keenan, president of Naral Pro-Choice America, urged supporters to press senators to demand that Judge Sotomayor reveal her views on privacy rights before any confirmation vote. “Everyone is just assuming that because Obama appointed her, she must be a die-hard pro-choice activist,” Mr. Waldman said, “but it’s really quite amazing how little we know about her views on abortion.” Given who is making the appointment and who has the Senate majority, we could do a lot worse, and if she doesn’t go full Souter, there is the potential that she could go reverse Souter-lite, flirting with the right on this issue or that. What if Obama’s rhumba with Hispanics to solidify the Dems’ gains in that growing electorate goes badly wrong for his already increasingly disaffected lefty base?

Should President Have Wide Ranging Cyber-Security Powers?
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  4-4-2009
If it is deemed necessary to shutdown the internet then does it not follow that cell phone communications systems and land line systems will also need to be shutdown? If the goal is to prevent citizens from communicating with each other then what about the postal service? What about transportation systems? Financial systems? Once these networks are shutdown there will be no communication among the citizenry. What scenario are our leaders playing out that would require such drastic restrictions to us? Under the guise of encouraging private-sector solutions this bill represents a very disturbing trend. And with the ability for our government to access all information we voluntarily give through our cell phone applications and other databases, it is extremely detrimental to our personal freedoms. This bill in the hands of another George W Bush could devastate the American way of life.

In Short: Google bought DoubleClick a while ago, an internet-based advertising firm. Today Google launched that program, and it tracks you through cookies. Privacy aware surfers delete their cookies once in a while, and/or are careful which cookies are stored on their computer. But that won't stop Google from tracking your surfing habits. So if you really want to stop Google from doing that to you, install this 'Advertising Cookie Opt-Out Plug-in'.

Ethical Concerns Over Octuplets
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  2-22-2009    2
Privacy concerns are important in our society and should be honestly and openly addressed. Yet, this ongoing story concerning the birth of octuplets to an unemployed woman already with 6 children seem beyond the pale. IMO, there exist serious questions concerning this woman's sanity. Her fertility doctors collusion with her in this latest endeavor raise obvious questions about the ethics of all involved.
