by merrie  12-7-2009    1
Hansen has said in the past that "heads of major fossil-fuel companies who spread disinformation about global warming should be tried for high crimes against humanity and nature." What penalties would he recommend for himself and his CRU colleagues? We recall the unguarded admission of climate alarmist Steven Schneider of Stanford, printed in Discover in 1989: "To capture the public imagination, we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and make little mention of any doubts we may have. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest." The warm-mongers at CRU and NASA may be neither. Let's open their books to find how well they may have been cooked. Investors.com http://bit.ly/7IK1wb

Yale Nixes Muhammad Cartoons in New Book
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2009    5
Many Muslims consider any depiction of Muhammad to be blasphemous. But other writers and artists have been willing to risk even violent reprisals for the sake of free speech. Author Sherry Jones has weathered threats for writing "The Jewel of Medina," a novel that depicts sex scenes involving Muhammad and his bride Aisha. Her original publisher, Random House, put the book on an indefinite hold following concerns that its content would be offensive to Muslims. "I decided to take a stand for free speech and publish my books in spite of threats and violence because I wanted to make a positive difference in the world," said Jones, who will publish a sequel, "The Sword of Medina," in the fall.

Jerusalem - Prof.: Magen David Not an Ancient Jewish Symbol
nuttyriv3r
by nuttyriv3r  5-5-2009
The official usage of the Star of David as a Jewish symbol began in Prague. Prof. Scholem writes that it was either chosen by the local Jewish community or by the Christian rule as a means of branding the Jews, who later adopted and embraced it. In 1354 Emperor Charles IV granted the Jews the privilege of raising a flag of their own, and this flag contained the Magen David. One of these flags can still be found in Prague's Old-New Synagogue. From Prague, where the Magen David was printed on book covers and engraved on cemetery headstones, the symbol spread to the rest of Europe and gradually became known as the symbol of Judaism. During the first Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897 the Zionist flag, which bears a blue Star of David, was chosen. But Prof. Scholem claims that the symbol only became truly meaningful during the Holocaust, after the Nazis used it to mark the Jews, and thus sanctified it. According to Scholem, this gave the graphic symbol a spiritual sense of sacredne

Concerned? Try some HOPE.
davboz
by davboz   4-24-2009    3
Concerned that investors are catching on to this scam? Turn loose an official such as Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Donald Kohn, who tried this week to give investors hope that steadier consumer spending and home sales, together with those dolled-up earnings results at banks, indicate the U.S. economy is poised to stage a gradual recovery later this year.

New Online Dictionary Redefines ‘look it up’
merrie
by merrie  3-22-2009
Lexicographer Erin McKean’s interactive ‘Wordnik’ is projected to be the largest online dictionary ever. This week she is slated to launch what may be the biggest revolution in the printed word since, well, printed words. McKean was 8 years old when she decided that when she grew up, she wanted to be a lexicographer – the technical term for a writer or editor of dictionaries. She first found it in her daily scouring of The Wall Street Journal. Her father was a Journal devotee “I think I was really attracted by the fact that it was taking 21 years to make the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary,” she recalls. “I was 8. Twenty-one years was forever.” The lexicography bug stuck, in part because McKean loved language. She was a voracious reader, plowing through her local libraries’ stacks and devouring anything she found at home, she says. “If it was lying around, I read it. If my parents didn’t want me to read it,” she says, “they had to hide it."
