POPSReport From a Forgotten War: Second in a Series
Taliban leaders also provided a haven for Usama bin Laden's Al Qaeda to launch the 9/11 attack. In November 2001, when they were deposed by the U.S.-backed Northern Alliance, many of the Taliban fled south to Pakistan and east into Iran. This spring, they came back, intent on overthrowing the democratically elected government of President Hamid Karzi. That's when the Marines of TF 2/7 arrived "in country" to train and mentor Afghan Army and police forces. The unit's Area of Operations (A/O) is more than 28,000 square kilometers — roughly the size of Vermont. There is only one paved highway. Overland transport to some of the fifteen forward bases and combat outposts where TF 2/7 operates often takes more than 24 hours of continuous day and night movement. Until this week — when four CH-53 transport helos and four Cobra gunships arrived, the task force had to rely on NATO aircraft...

POPSIsrael Backs Georgia in Caspian Oil Pipeline Battle with Russia until a "durable peace" is reached. "As soon as a durable peace takes hold we need to move forward with dialogue and peaceful negotiations." DEBKAfile’s geopolitical experts note that on the surface level, the Russians are backing the separatists of S. Ossetia and neighboring Abkhazia as payback for the strengthening of American influence in tiny Georgia and its 4.5 million inhabitants. However, more immediately, the conflict has been sparked by the race for control over the pipelines carrying oil and gas out of the Caspian region. The Russians may just bear with the pro-US Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili’s ambition to bring his country into NATO. But they draw a heavy line against his plans and those of Western oil companies, including Israeli firms, to route the oil routes from Azerbaijan and the gas lines from Turkmenistan, which transit Georgia, through Turkey instead of hooking them up to Russian pipelines.

POPSU.S. refuses Israel weapons to attack Iran: report The result of this difference over weapons will be of little interest if the Jews go nuclear. Good that America says no. ( I thought the Jews were given the Holy Land to look after it, not as a base for wars based on paranoia.)

POPS"Could we bring in nuclear material... pretend [it's] Iraqi?" Wow! Along the lines of the forged letter claiming WMD were in Iraq: Former Marine Intel specialist and chief weapons inspector for the UN in Iraq Scott Ritter, tells a story from a trusted Iraqi insider about an interrogation shortly after the US invasion. Spirited into the Green Zone, "Mohammed" is interviewed by a Army LTC identified only as "Dave."

POPSLet's Do The Time Warp Again! I really doubt it will have the artistic value of the original. The clip mentions the midnight showings, Milwaukee's Oriental Theater has the longest running midnight show history anywhere. I'm sure it will survive MTV.

POPSHumans' response to risk can be unnecessarily dangerous, study The results of Lotem's research may also be used by economists, politicians and psychologists, who need to know when people will take risks, says Prof. Lotem. A wider understanding of this phenomenon can affect business decisions, the economy ― and, hopefully, the number of road accidents in America each year.

POPSMusharraf, Loyalists Decide To Fight It Out Later, the governors of Punjab and Sindh met the president to discuss the political situation. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad is said to have renewed support for President Musharraf on behalf of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. The president had decided in the morning not to visit China as a state guest for the Olympics opening ceremonies but he was persuaded by his allies to review the decision. It was decided that he would leave for Beijing on Thursday morning, accompanied by Punjab Governor Salman Taseer. The sources said that the PML-Q leaders had asked the president to defend himself in person in parliament. They also convinced him not to call off his visit to China which was a tested strategic friend of Pakistan. Chaudhry Pervaiz said: “Gen (retd) Musharraf is an elected president who has the credit of holding free and fair elections. He does not deserve this treatment and we will stand by him in case of any effort to oust him.”

POPSNew Gear to Boost Space Station Population The station's new Water Reclamation System, a refrigerator-sized filtration and recycler unit, is designed to ease that shuttle dependence and help make larger crews more self-sufficient. It is scheduled to launch alongside the new toilet and phone booth-sized sleeping chambers in November aboard NASA's shuttle Endeavour, which will also ferry NASA astronaut Sandra Magnus to the station to join its Expedition 18 crew. 'By getting the crew quarters deployed, we'll have extra bedrooms,' Magnus said. The station's Russian Zvezda service module currently contains the station's main crew quarters.
