US Marines facing reality
notareargunner
by notareargunner  10-25-2009
They ought to read this blog, they and their inept and idiotic political masters. I had a US former Marine Sgt work for me in Namibia. He could not understand that his two year enlistment did nowhere equate to that of a 15 year regular soldier. Very few of the lessons in soldiering can be gained from the library of military literature. They are gained in the field, from those who have experienced all that service has to offer. The British made an enormous mistake when, after the Falklands, the major slice of experienced senior nco's were forcibly retired. That single instrument allowed second class senior officers to kowtow to their political masters, with disastrous procurement of everything essential from personal weapons to food, through footwear to transport. When General Jackson and his cronies were feathering their pension pots, the skills and loyalty of the squaddie were evaporating on a maelstrom of political correctness and Health & Safety. I heard not a beep out of th

Florida Cereal Stealer Gets 15 Years in Prison
sahara
by sahara  10-7-2009
The judge who sentenced Griffin seems to agree, but said he was bound by the law to give the reoffender the mandatory minimum. “Personally, I think the money could have been better spent in treatment rather than incarceration for 15 years, but that is not my decision,” Bartow Judge Donald Jacobsen said. “It seems to me that treatment would be a far better resolution of this.”

Chutney de pommes et prunes au gingembre
Jamakkronic
by Jamakkronic  9-18-2009

The Mysterious Nok Culture
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-26-2009
more ( at source): Breunig runs an excavation near the Nigerian highlands of Jos, where the mysterious Nok culture once blossomed. Spanning more than 80,000 square kilometers (31,000 square miles), the tropical region they lived in was larger than Ireland. Its inhabitants lived in wooden huts and ate porridge made from pearl millet. Some women subjected themselves to bloody "scar ornaments" scratched into their breasts with knives. And, as archaeologists imagine it, smoke hung in the air as people fired masterly terracotta creations in kilns heated to 700 degrees Celsius (1,300 degrees Fahrenheit).

Some wonderful moves coming from Africa. First the sex strike in Kenya, now the question of who has the right to wear the pants. Maybe they are hearing of the suffering families who have to ban men from their villages and have everyone inside and safe before the sun sets, lest the fighters kidnap the boys.

Julia Child's Copper Pots Come Home
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  8-3-2009    2
The museum's exhibit is called "Bon Appetit" and includes Child's beloved Garland restaurant range, cabinets in cool greens and blues, a dime-store dish drainer and her black KitchenAid refrigerator complete with magnets. They even brought her junk drawer. In its new location, the 14-by-20-foot kitchen appears exactly as it was the day museum staff took it apart in Cambridge — down to the jar of Skippy peanut butter on the countertop. The pot wall, what Child called her gleaming "battery de cuisine," was the missing piece. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=111438179&ft=1&f=1001
