Human Overpopulation
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  5-16-2009
In this video Jane Goodall is talking about Developing Nations. In supposed 1st world nations the question changes. In supposed first world nations we live longer - but it is often at the expense of quality of life. Though I am not in a position to say, whose life is more important than anyone elses. What it does bring up for me, are questions I ask myself about what is really important - human population explosion or space for the earth to regenerate? Is colonizing another planet going to solve our current issues or will we just take them to a new planet? There are many intricate questions that come up for me around this.

Strip of Iraq 'on the Verge of Exploding'
ratilfar

Cont.... The long-cherished dream of many of the world's 25 million ethnic Kurds is an independent state that encompasses parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. All but Iraq adamantly oppose Kurdish autonomy, much less a Kurdish state. Iraqi Kurds continue to insist they are not seeking independence, even as they unilaterally expand the territory they control in Iraq.

Hey Congress! Georgia Attacked South Ossetia First!
blueridge
by blueridge  8-14-2008    17
Let Congress know who is being overlooked in the US-Russia-Georgia conflict--the people of South Ossetia who want and prefer Russian rule since their declaration of independence from Georgia years ago--whom Georgia attacked and invaded, killing civilians! Russia responded. Congress needs to stop listening to White House propagandists and see the real story, before they start a new Iraq conflict, with Russia, and even towards world war (i.e. NATO versus Russia and allies)! And Congress needs informed people to help wake them up to these documented facts: The Ossetians, a divided people with one section living within Russia on the north side of the Caucasus mountains, and the other in Georgia, generally felt more comfortable with Russian rule than as part of the new, post-Soviet Georgian state. A small and nasty war with Tbilisi in 1990-92 led to a declaration of independence Is it not the Ossetians that have the stake in all this, who will govern and rule them?

You Can't Fool All of the People All of the Time
merrie
by merrie  6-25-2008    1
Instead of Drill! Drill! Drill!, their motto could be: Kill! Kill! Kill! In response to skyrocketing gas prices, liberals say, practically in unison, "We can't drill our way out of this crisis." What does it mean? Finding more oil isn't going to increase the supply of oil? It is the typical Democratic strategy to babble meaningless slogans, as if they have a plan. Their plan is: the permanent twilight of the human race. Liberals complain that -- as Obama put it -- there's "no way that allowing offshore drilling would lower gas prices right now. At best you are looking at five years or more down the road."This is as opposed to airplanes that run on woodchips, which should be up and running any moment now. Clinton proposed a 26-cent tax on gas. John Kerry said it should be 50 cents. Gore endorsed the Malthusian proposal of Paul and Anne Ehrlich in "The Population Explosion" hat taxes gas gradually

Youngest Exploded Star In The Milky Way Is Discovered
merrie
by merrie  5-20-2008
It turns out, Green and his team came across the remnants, now called G1.9+0.3, more than 20 years ago using the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in Socorro, NM, and estimated the object’s age to be 400-1,000 years old. It is near the center of the Milky Way, some 25,000 light-years from Earth. By comparing notes, the astronomers learned the images taken more than two decades apart documented the expansion of debris from the star's explosion. The images taken in 2007 were about 16 percent larger than the ones taken in 1985. "This is a huge difference," said Reynolds. "It means the explosion debris is expanding very quickly, which in turn means the object is much younger than we originally thought." Reynolds also observed the object with the VLA radio telescope to confirm the supernova remnant's rapid expansion. Unlike visible-light telescopes, radio and X-ray telescopes can penetrate the thick clouds of gas and dust in our galaxy.

an argument against climate catastrophism
sylviadafox
by sylviadafox  2-2-2008
"The marriage of environmental catastrophism and corporate interests is best captured in the figure of Al Gore. As a politician, he came to public light as a shill for two immense power schemes in the state of Tennessee: the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Oak Ridge Nuclear Laboratory. Gore is not, as he claims, a non-partisan green; he is influenced very much by his background. His arguments, many of which are based on grotesque science and shrill predictions, seem to me to be part of a political and corporate outlook." "In my forthcoming book, A Short History of Fear, I explore the link between fearmongering and climate catastrophism. For example, alarmism about population explosion is being revisited through the climate issue. Population alarmism goes back as far as Malthus, of course; and in the environmental movement there has always been a very sinister strain of Malthusianism. This is particularly the case in the US where there has never been as great a socialist challenge

Tehran Calls Iranian Kurds "Terrorists"
merrie
by merrie  12-14-2007    1
In an exclusive interview with Newsmax recently in Berlin, Ahmadi says that Iran was now working hand-in-glove with Turkey to get PJAK labeled as a terrorist organization. “Iran knows they can’t make trouble for us directly because they have such bad relations with Europe. That’s why they are going through Turkey.” The Iranian regime has been telling journalists and diplomats that PJAK and the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers Party) are the same. “But we are an Iranian party, and have nothing to do with Turkey,” he says. PJAK has become a serious threat to the regime in Tehran because it is fighting to overthrow the clerical regime in favor of a secular republic and because it favors equality between men and women, Ahmadi asserts. The group has around 2,500 armed guerilla fighters, 40 percent of whom are women.

Savage Capitalism in the Post-Communist World
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  11-8-2007    2
Although China has grabbed most of the headlines for poisonous toys, Russia has quietly gone to pieces as well. What is happening in these countries is not merely the residual effects of the failure of communism, it is a violently selfish mentality, perhaps born in the desperation of bread lines, but now blooming in the vacuum of law and order created by the collapse of the Communist system. In China and Russia both we see the values espoused by George Bush and his Neo-Conservative gang taken to their horrific logical extreme. Customers have become a commodity. Wealth is the only guarantor of safety and power. Corporations and corruption rule the government. The fanatical pursuit of wealth for its own sake has taken over, leaving the average citizen to fend for themselves in a frightening wilderness of indifference and exploitation. The blazing fires of this economic explosion are fueled by an icy detachment from the basic human traits of empathy and compassion.

Canada goose-kill in United States
jetcloud
by jetcloud  10-27-2007    2
In 1990 the Garden State had 28,000 resident Canada geese. By 1999, the population had ballooned to 82,000. New Jersey has the highest concentration of resident Canada geese. "In the last 60 years they've rapidly increased in numbers and they're very successful in breeding. They have five, six, seven young and they have no enemies so no animals kill them and so they're spreading wildly." Typically, the geese are protected under The Migratory Birds Convention, a shared treaty between Canada and the United States. "A Canada goose could not be captured, harassed, shot, wounded, killed or collected with out a permit," Carol Bannerman, a spokeswoman from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Service told CTV.ca." Ya, da permit, eh?

At least when Maggie Thatcher was in government, we had a democracy. Something that isn't present in today's Britain. Labour was set up for the people, by the people to represent the work force. Now it has become much more sinister and that concerns me. They are taking us from a democracy into a communistic state. I was born here and live here; and yet, I fear if this trend carries on what future is their for the following generations. What will Britain be like for them? Thank You Tony Blair for destroying our civil liberties. (tongue in cheek)
