Where Does He Get All These Wondeful Steampunk Toys??
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-13-2008
I admit to being rather fond (actually, enamored) with the entire Steampunk Genre. I am a fan of many of the stylings that have come from one pop culture type to another... Junk stores are doing booming business these days as people hit them up for old brass fittings, watches, horns and other things to modify and adapt. We went through a similar phase with Star Wars and other Sci-Fi things in the 70a and they returned in the last decade. Super Heroes were big merchandise money makers during the WW II years, the mid 60s, and then again the late 80s with the birth of the Batman craze following the campy antics of the 60s and the dark, Gothic feel of the movie series. Super Heroes came back in a big way with X-Men. This is what I have always heard that popular culture repeats itself every generation or so... Hold on to those Slinkys, Hula Hoops, and Slip n' Slide: we may be in for a wild ride again!

Racial In-sensitivity or Over-sensitivity?
cmstratton
by cmstratton  7-9-2008
This is an example of how overly-sensitive and conservative American society has become. It seems like people are always on the look-out for what could possibly be interpreted as a potential negative connotation against a particular race, color, religion, etc. Could you interpret this character's features as mocking black people - sure. But it's a cartoon character - they are often over-exaggerated to make them more engaging. The story of the cartoon means no disrespect, but because some racial leaders interpret it as offensive, it's being removed from stores. I think we go overboard more often than not in these types of situations. Is the cartoon saying black people are bad - no. Does the character exaggerate some physical characteristics black people tend to have - it looks like it. But why is that offensive?

"The Man Who Invented The Twentieth Century"
merrie
by merrie  7-2-2008    2
Much of his early work pioneered modern electrical engineering and many of his discoveries were of groundbreaking importance. During this period, in the United States, Tesla's fame rivaled that of any other inventor or scientist in history or popular culture, but due to his eccentric personality and unbelievable and sometimes bizarre claims about possible scientific and technological developments, Tesla was ultimately ostracized and regarded as a mad scientist. Never having put much focus on his finances, Tesla died impoverished at the age of 86.

Al Gore Endorses Al Franken!!!
merrie
by merrie  6-9-2008
Franken's old Playboy article concerns Democrats Rep. Betty McCollum, who supported the comedian's rival Mike Ciresi until he dropped out of the race for the party's nomination for the Senate, complained Thursday that she and other Minnesota Democrats will be on the same November ballot as a candidate "who has pornographic writings that are indefensible." http://www.wtopnews.com/?sid=1412373&nid=213 Franken Asian Sterotype Shock Video For a person who wants to represent Minnesota in the United States Senate, this video clip will most certainly call into question the credibility of someone who apparently doesn't realize that Minnesotan has one of the largest Hmong population in the country. A culture that has succeeded in this nation by having to fight against racism, inequality and cultural stereotyping. http://www.minnesotademocratsexposed.com/2008/03/14/franken-asian-stereotype-shock-video/

Raised On Hate
debbyski
by debbyski  5-25-2008    18
As one listens to his conservative radio talk personality, one is moved to question whether it's his true self, not because Savage isn't consistent in his views, but because the views are so grotesque it's difficult to believe that anyone-let alone a former beatnik-could espouse them with a straight face. While it's more than passing strange for a homophobic, conservative radio host to work out of San Francisco, Savage continues to broadcast nationally from his base in the city he likes to call "San Fran Sicko. In his book The Savage Nation: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Borders, Language and Culture, he writes, "I was raised on neglect, anger, and hate. I was raised the old-fashioned way."

In Indonesia, life plays out in the shadow of fiery peaks
alanocu

"Death by volcano takes many forms: searing lava, suffocating mud, or the tsunamis that often follow an eruption. In 1883, Mount Krakatau (often misspelled as Krakatoa), located off Java's coast, triggered a tsunami that claimed more than 36,000 lives. The name became a metaphor for a catastrophic natural disaster."

A Fashion Color Icon: Blue Jeans
alanocu
by alanocu  4-29-2008    3
"Blue jeans are unique because of their attachment to one singular color. One of the earliest precursors to jeans was the dungaree, a thick cotton material created in India in the 16th century. The makers of the fabric choose to use indigo as the dye because it was the most prevalent natural dye of the time, and the dark tone made it a good choice for wear and when frequent washing was not possible." "The first jeans came in two styles, indigo blue and brown cotton. The brown cotton never became popular because unlike denim, the material never became soft and comfortable after time." "The shade of blue known as denim is an official Crayola color."

π
Aribeth
by Aribeth  3-14-2008    9
Pi(π) appears where you least expect it. Coincidentally, Pi Day is also the birthday of Albert Einstein, who no doubt knew more than a little about pi. Pi Day celebrants, usually children with an enthusiastic teacher and a varying degree of personal interest in the subject, learn about pi, circles, and, if they're lucky, eat baked pies of various sorts.
