POPSBox-Office Bloodbath: Paranormal Slays Saw VI Paranormal continued its preternatural rise. Made for $11,000, bought by Paramount Pictures for just $300,000 and marketed for less than $10 million, Oren Peli's subtle scare-athon earned $22 million to become a winner in its fifth week of gradually widening release. It has now earned $62.5 million and could hit $100 million. What's next? The Inevitable. According to today's Los Angeles Times, Paramount is "actively considering producing a sequel."

POPSSlasher Politics Per Jigsaw’s instructions, turncoat Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) shepherds the insurance company nitwits to their demise. No reason why the ”Saw” franchise shouldn’t jump on the pop-culture Obama cheerleading train like everyone else in La-la with a little B-flick health-care advocacy. And with the loan officer thing, there’s something for everyone! One thing slasher fans may want to bear in mind, though. When your gaping, bloody saw wounds need to be stitched and stapled up, do you really want to wait in line for the lowest bidder? Boston Herald’s Tenley Woodman gives Saw VI a “D.” No, not for the feel-good politics embedded in the middle of a feel-bad extravaganza. … it is the depraved acts and gore that make these films objectionable. Hate to quibble, but I think that’s what makes them marketable.

POPSWhat's with all the zombies?
Call me a zombie pundit, but I agree with "World War Z" author Max Brooks' suggestion that the concurrent rise of zombie pop and political cultures is no coincidence. "Zombies are an apocalyptic threat, we are living in times of apocalyptic anxiety (and) we need a vessel in which to coalesce those anxieties," he says. In fact, I'll go out on a severed limb and take it further: If zombies specifically represent the apocalyptic downsides of immortalized mindlessness, then today’s zombie zeitgeist is not merely a result of scary quandaries created by stupidity. It is a reaction to both those problems and the sense that they can never be thwarted. Here we are, a year after a financial implosion that should have driven a stake in the heart of free market fundamentalism. Here we are, a year after an election that was supposed to pour holy water on Wall Street vampires, exorcise the economy's demons and challenge the ancient mummies of neoconservative foreign policy. Yet here we are,

POPSMexicans break World's 'Thriller' Dance Record "He transcends borders," says Fabiola Aguilar, decked out in the red get-up that Michael Jackson wore in the original video. She crouched over, next to her 9-year-old son in an identical outfit, and both simulated arising from the dead, as they rehearsed moves they'd practiced for two weeks. "Dancing brings us all together." Birthday celebrations and memorials across the globe came as Jackson's June 25 death was officially ruled a homicide. Mexico City's event had the full backing of the capital, which marveled at the spontaneity of a grassroots effort turned mega. "Many of these kids weren't even alive when Thriller came out," says the head of the city's youth institute, Javier Hidalgo, sporting a white glove.

POPSMalaysia bars Muslims from Black Eyed Peas concert Here's how I'm reading it: The government wants to promote tourism in the country but they don't want the majority citizens to participate; however, the minority can certainly help boost not only the image of the country but the tourism industry itself. Looks like the government is confused.

POPSConfronting the anglo white male dominance Looks like Judge Sotomayor is going to pass through. She deserves it. But the whole process is shedding light, once again, on the inability of our national power structures to welcome perspectives that are not in the majority. The burden is always on the outsider to learn to navigate the dominant structure. I sure wish that would change.
