'The Empathic Civilization': Rethinking Human Nature in the Biosphere Era
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  2-5-2010
The point in short: "Recent discoveries in brain science and child development, however, are forcing us to rethink these long-held shibboleths about human nature. Biologists and cognitive neuroscientists are discovering mirror-neurons--the so-called empathy neurons--that allow human beings and other species to feel and experience another's situation as if it were one's own. We are, it appears, the most social of animals and seek intimate participation and companionship with our fellows."

Belief Affects Our Genes
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  1-30-2010    2
Reality is alive, dynamic and interconnected. Science has been saying so for nearly a century, and we experience it every time we walk on a beach or look into another's eyes. Yet most of our cultural, societal, political and economic structures act as if it's not so. We can no longer afford to indulge outdated worldviews. In order to deal with the crises we now face, we've got to act on the new realities and understandings revealed by science.

PQ | Yvo de Boer
altaloman
by altaloman  1-29-2010
Addressing the media for the first time since last month's Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Yvo de Boer said the fact that Copenhagen did not deliver the full agreement the world needs to address climate change “just makes the task more urgent.” Three key things that Copenhagen produced are: 1) It raised climate change to the highest level of government; 2) The Copenhagen Accord reflects a political consensus on the long-term, global response to climate change; 3) The negotiations brought an almost full set of decisions to implement rapid climate action near to completion. Mr. de Boer said that we’re now in a cooling off period that gives countries useful and needed time to resume their discussions with each other. “If countries follow up the outcomes of Copenhagen calmly, with eyes firmly on the advantage of collective action, they have every chance of completing the job,” he said. ___ SOURCE | http://googlelabs.twi.bz/z ___ SEARCH | http://google.twi.bz/x

Today, at History News Network, you can read the initial essays. In addition to my introduction, there are four essays: -- Robert O. Paxton, professor emeritus at Columbia University and the author of The Anatomy of Fascism, leads off the essays with "The Scholarly Flaws of Liberal Fascism." -- Roger Griffin, professor of political science at Oxford Brookes and the author of The Nature of Fascism, has a piece titled "An Academic Book - Not!" -- Matthew Feldman, professor of history at University of Northampton, and a co-editor of several academic texts on fascism, offers his assessment on why refuting Goldberg still matters: "Poor Scholarship, Wrong Conclusions". -- Chip Berlet, senior researcher at Political Research Associates and the co-author (with Matthew Lyons) of Right-Wing Populism in America: Too Close for Comfort, has penned a history of Goldberg's arguments, "The Roots of Liberal Fascism: The Book."

USA Supreme Court Screw Up!
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  1-21-2010    2
Today the USA Supreme Court (the Bush ones), by the slimest of majorities, 5-4 decision, overturned 100 years of campaign finance restrictions. The rules are crazy & bad now. (Money dominates our elections to the max) It's fulls of loopholes, also. It defies regulation but --- now it's going to be a hundred times worse! You don't have to arrest people in the USA if you don't like what they are saying. It's easier to just ignore them. Or, even better, drown out their voices so they have zero chance of getting heard. What the Bushies on the Supreme Court did today allows corporations to spend as much as they want on elections: No Limits. (Not even the limits with loopholes). No limits at all. Exxon will make more campaign ads. Make their own documentaries. Support candidates more directly. And they will thus be able to lobby for even bigger "research grants," and tax breaks from the government. No limits. Hire some bloggers. Hire people to post on Clipmarks. Gads!

More from the article below: "She was asked some simple questions in order to get a sense of who this new face to most voters might be. But she was quickly revealed to be an idiot. Therefore the big lie had to be trotted out to change the story. Poor Sarah. Poor chief executive of one of America’s fifty states. Poor ferocious hockey mom. Poor potential president who might one day have to take on Vladimir Putin or Hu Jintao or al Qaeda. Poor abused Sarah. Monsters like Katie Couric were brutalizing her by asking her outrageous questions, such as, “What do you read?”. All of which continues to explain one of the biggest lies of our time, the notion that regressives/Republicans are serious about national security, while progressives/Democrats are not."

America Infects the World With its False Beliefs About Mental Illness
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  1-17-2010    12
Psychology is not a science its findings are based upon concensus of observation, which by defintion is un-scientific. There are no rests and most pyschologist will admit this so why wont the drug companies? The answer is profit and control. This unnerving possibility springs from recent research by a loose group of anthropologists and cross-cultural psychiatrists. Swimming against the biomedical currents of the time, they have argued that mental illnesses are not discrete entities like the polio virus with their own natural histories. These researchers have amassed an impressive body of evidence suggesting that mental illnesses have never been the same the world over (either in prevalence or in form) but are inevitably sparked and shaped by the ethos of particular times and places.

Friday Night Document Dump: Ft. Hood Was Terrorism
merrie
by merrie  1-15-2010    1
Remember back in November when Major Malik Nadal Hasan went on a shooting rampage on the Army base at Fort Hood, Tex., and the media’s first impulse was to reflexively wonder why he had done it? Was it because he was about to be deployed overseas? Was it because, as an Army psychiatrist, he had snapped under the pressure of de-briefing psychologically shattered soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and was thus suffering from a hitherto-unknown psychological condition called “Secondary Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder” ? The head-scratchers and chin-pullers scratched and pulled but, by golly, they just couldn’t seem to wrap their minds around why this man could possibly have done such a thing. The shooting rampage at Fort Hood was “an act of terrorism,” a senior US official said on Friday, employing a phrase that the Obama administration has previously avoided to describe the attack. bigjournalism.com http://bit.ly/8FCUC2

Coakley Staffer Who Attacked Reporter Is an Obama Appointee

The Broadcasting Board of Governors oversees federal news operations like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe. I’m not certain attacking reporters who ask politicians challenging questions is the best qualification to provide an objective news voice to oppressed parts of the world. I would hope that our Broadcasting Board of Governors could at least agree that reporters should be free from political assaults. Our Mr. Meehan has some explaining to do. His Senate confirmation hearing should be a hoot. Update: A top GOP Senate Aide had this to say in response to this article: “The President should pull his nomination unless he thinks the BBG should be led by a guy now best known for suppressing the freedom of the press.” On November 19, President Obama nominated Mr. Meehan: http://bit.ly/8D3TZf

The DVD is on order! It seems that the film can also influence rather skeptical adults, too. It's not whether climate change is man made, or not. It is the whole process of the destruction of eco-systems causing extinctions and suffering amongst those 'non human persons' who had lived there. The issue is one of morality, not science.

Fraud: the one constant in the global warming hysteria
dl211
by dl211  1-5-2010
IPCC assessment reports, and particularly their Summaries for Policymakers (SPM), are noted for their selective use of information and their bias to support the political goal of control of fossil fuels in order to fight an alleged anthropogenic global warming (AGW). So the Kyoto protocol was based on fictitious science, exaggerated or fabricated outright for political purposes. The same Professor Santer who hijacked the Second Assessment Report figures prominently in Climategate. Many of his emails were disclosed by the East Anglia whistleblower; among other things, they show Santer resisting all efforts by independent scientists to obtain information, through Freedom of Information Act requests, about the statistical manipulations that Santer applies to raw climate data to “prove” the existence of anthropogenic global warming.

In England, It’s Not How Well You Educate, It’s How Politically Correct You Are
merrie

In official guidance, inspectors are told to be aware of “gender imbalances” in upper-ability sets and ensure after-school sport is not dominated by pupils belonging to one ethnic group. Some local councils are also warning schools to make sure staff and volunteers reflect the ethnic make-up of local communities and feature people with disabilities to provide good role models for pupils. Look at England closely, my friends. The country that led the way, that provided the seeds for the American genius, is dying before our eyes. Even worse, our politically correct, liberal, Progressive masters are hastening to drag us down that same path. Let me say again what you’ll hear me say in post after post after post in 2010: The November 2010 elections are pretty much our last chance to stop the PC car before it drags the whole nation over the edge of the cliff.

From Global Warming Believer To Skeptic
merrie
by merrie  12-22-2009    1
Climategate jolted me into confronting the massive fraud and deception by top global warming scientists, who were in a position to twist the peer-review process in their favor, and did so shamelessly. Yet still most media reports desperately minimize Climategate, saying that it doesn’t taint the massive research supporting global warming theory. To them I say, how do you know that? Have you investigated how much of that research was published due to the manipulation of these unethical and fraudulent scientists? Do you know how much research that goes against the global warming activist claims was unfairly suppressed? Until all this is known, it’s not possible to say with any confidence how much of global warming theory will remain after all the fraud and deceit has been removed. And until climate science is cleaned up, it doesn’t deserve the worship so many in the media unthinkingly give its tainted practitioners.

O-bow-ma Finds Someone To Bow To In Copenhagen After his brief, listless and cliché-ridden speech in Copenhagen that aired live on Morning Joe today, Pres. Obama makes the hand-shaking rounds on the podium. He continues the glad-handing off the podium, until he spots someone and breaks into . . . a bow . With all the mulling around, it's hard to determine exactly what's going on. It looks like he might have been exchanging bows with a man in the scrum surrounding him. But PBO's bow seemed to go beyond the perfunctory head-nod that in the circumstances surely would have satisfied, say, Japanese etiquette. NewsBusters http://bit.ly/5G65y7

These are the kind of stories that demonstration how broken and totally unfair our justice system is. Anyone with a couple of "thinking" brain cells would realize that when it comes to human existence, right vs. wrong is not an exact science. Human emotion always trumps common sense if laws aren't there to intervene. This is a good reason why the DEATH PENALTY should be abolished. Many western societies who have advanced so beyond the mentality of the USA in sophistication have long understood this. I love my country but too many Americans who also profess love for this country will at the drop of a hat bark, HANG EM or OFF WITH HIS HEAD, and follow through if they could because of an naive notion that ONE SIZE FITS ALL. In other words, if you don't look like them, act like them, "think" (I use that term loosely) like them, they will refer to your ubiquity as alien and not deserving the rights they enjoy. Ignorance is not bliss! http://www.thethinkingblue.com/family/BOSTONLEGAL.html

The same models that have produced all the dire predictions of pending doom. One thing you NEVER do in science is ‘adjust’ the data to meet your desired outcome. And one thing you also NEVER do is trust those whose careers and credibility rest on producing a desired outcome to do the verification and validation of their own theories.  Thus there is no need to further kill jobs, weaken the US Economy, dramatically increase the cost of living, and tax America into oblivion. The United Nations, who will have their capabilities at corruption compromised by the ongoing exposure of the climate warming hoax offered this shallow attempt to revive the myth. Rajendra K. Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control, offered up this insipid explanation as to the validity of his panel’s existence. http://bit.ly/4DAtbG Despite efforts to diminish the obvious fact that a science built on fraud is not science, it is a scam and nothing more, politicians like Senator Barbara Boxer, are instead on the attack (http://bit.ly/7S4A0P) stating that hacking is illegal and the US will prosecute the hackers for a crime that was committed in England .....

The importance of the truth can't be overstated, especially in the world of science and particularly with the climate summit at Copenhagen set for next week. To wit, the IPCC study blaming humans for global warming will be the basis for discussions among world leaders on how best to handicap developed industrial economies. The scientists involved in writing that report are the same ones implicated by the scandalous e-mails, leading us to conclude that much of the report -- and therefore the efforts of the world's political leaders -- is based upon lies.
