POPSBBC hates criticism
This is a blog the BBC, financed through mine and yours forced subscriptions - you do not have a say in whether or not you pay - because concern are raised in it as to the efficacy of the Beebs editing and reporting. Whilst the Beeb swapped and moved channels so that the elderly and dishevelled licence payer lost contact with their chosen sport, it appeared that the only sportsman that the Beeb was interested in was a brilliant Jamaican sprinter. As there was no British interest in the event, it could be assumed that sports where Brits were going for Gold would take full coverage. No. The Beeb could not even flash up on the screen that the events were going on- on a defined channel. And if they objected to the open reference to the winner of the 400 mts, lets get it straight. It was the courts that reinstated a woman who could not make it to a specified location, three times, but could get on the plane to China, for her to run against a proven drug taker, a competitor banned for drug u

POPSNO Filming or NO Fly. Isn't the plane property of JetBlue thus making it private property? I record a lot of videos too so I feel for gramma but she has to realize that her age and whether or not she said she planned to use it for personal reasons do not matter. If they don't want people filming on/in their property and any altercations that occur therein then they have every right to inform her. It shouldn't matter if you're 56 or 16 - they will enforce it. Not to sound like a total jerk but how many would be saying "Oh the poor thing!" if this tale were about a 16 year old boy? Yeah, it was a bit terse the way they handled it and they could have been a little nicer overall, there was no need of the accusations and attitude, but still - its their right. We pay for the privilege of the service, using their machine for personal transport, we do not have an inherent right to fly and to disregard the rules of public vs. private property.

POPS12-year-old US Girl Escapes Georgian Crisis Watch her interview, it has already been taken down on some sites for some reason. Also the part where she states that Georgia was the aggressor has been omitted from a few, this was how she saw it as, she was in it.

POPSDoes the Milky Way Influence Earth's Biodiversity Cycles? Research Says "Yes" The boost in cosmic-ray exposure may have a direct effect on Earth's organisms, according to paleontologist Bruce Lieberman. The radiation would lead to higher rates of genetic mutations in organisms or interfere with their ability to repair DNA damage. In this way, the process could lead to new species while killing off others. If future studies confirm the galaxy-biodiversity link, it would force scientists to broaden their ideas about what can influence life on Earth. "Maybe it's not just the climate and the tectonic events on Earth," Lieberman said. "Maybe we have to start thinking more about the extraterrestrial environment as well."

POPSNY in Black and White from Turn of Century This page of pics is one of the best I've seen on the Net. This just isn't a page of pictures - the creator knows history and buildings and weaves them in with the photographs. Definitely worth a look.

POPSGeorgia Report: Attacks Continue as Medvedev Orders Military Halt Russia's foreign minister called for Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili to resign and Medvedev said Georgia must pull its troops from South Ossetia and Abkhazia — the two Russian-backed breakaway provinces at the heart of the dispute. A Russian general dismissed Georgian reports that warplanes again bombed a pipeline and accused Georgia of spreading false reports in order to rally anti-Russian sentiments in the West.

POPSContinuing coverage of the Georgian situation from Eurasianet Some reportage on the bombing of Tbilisi airport. I can't foresee this ending well. From the story: "In a conference call with reporters, Lomaia outlined what he believed to be the remaining options for Georgia in its struggle against Russia: a deployment of military equipment 'not to fight, but to deter them'; and, the arrival of 'a very, very high representative of a foreign government for a few days' to demonstrate international support for Georgia. 'Frankly speaking, we do not see any other way of stopping these people,' he said."

POPSReactivating Forgotten Languages: How to Catch Up Vis-Ed (www.vis-ed.com) compiles its sets of flashcards from word frequency lists and includes sample phrases for usage. I begin flashcards after three or four days in-country. The sooner you decide to reactivate languages when needed, instead of maintaining them for an unspecified time in the future, the more leisure time you will have and the less diluted your language abilities will be when you need them. Don't fear losing languages if you've attained real fluency. They're just in temporary storage with the covers pulled over them.

POPSLightweight Batterly-Powered ElectricFlyer C Mini-Plane Takes Off On The Cheap The ElectraFlyer C is a carbon fiber-shelled mini plane that runs on electricity, and it also looks like a lot of fun. It's a mash-up of a commercially available glider body and a lightweight battery and motor/propeller assembly. It can fly for 90 to 120 minutes at up to 90MPH, and you can recharge it in about six hours from a regular 110 volt outlet for about 60 cents. Oh, and it's received its airworthiness cert, meaning it's perfectly legal.

POPSWorld's weirdest experiments Funny to read :-) You can try a variation on the 'white bear' experiment: Just put down the paper and don't think about CLIPMARKS for a while. But don't say you weren't warned. CLIPMARKS, once not invited in, can be devilishly hard to get rid of.
