ANTI CANCER SUPERFOODS..DO THEY REALLY WORK?
kareval
by kareval  11-2-2009
The rich, dark colors of blueberries, Brazilian acai berries, raspberries and cranberries come from phytochemicals that protect against numerous types of cancer. Most recently, researchers at the University of Florida found that the active ingredient in acai berries destroyed cancer cells when tested in cell cultures. And blueberries and muscadine grapes contain compounds that recent research shows cause cancer cells in the liver to self-destruct. In studies particularly important to women, cranberries have recently been discovered to be an important weapon in the fight against deadly ovarian cancer. Studies reported at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society found that ovarian cancer cells that were becoming resistant to platinum chemotherapy – the standard of care for ovarian cancer – became six times more sensitive when exposed to a compound in cranberries. The anti-cancer properties of all these berries are so strong that researchers have developing concentrated s

Tea---------- The caffeine content in tea is useful for stimulating alertness, mood and motivation, but is also a rich source of the antioxidant called catechins. Studies suggest that catechins protect the artery walls against the damage that causes heart disease and prevents formation of blood clots. Red Wine or grape juice------------ Grapes provide vitamin C, vitamin B1 and vitamin B6–red grapes also contain powerful phytochemicals that may help decrease risk of cardiovascular disease. . Resveratrol, a polyphenolic stilbene found in the skins of red fruits including grapes has been shown to have anti-oxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activity.

What IS a Nutritarian?
Perthgurl_6024
by Perthgurl_6024  4-25-2009
A nutritarian is a person whose food choices are influenced by nutritional quality. The Fuhrman Philosophy: The quality of a diet can be based on three simple criteria: 1) Levels of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals) per calorie. 2) Amounts of macronutrients (fat, carbohydrate, protein) to meet individual needs, without excessive calories that may lead to weight gain or health compromise. 3) Avoidance of potentially toxic substances (such as trans fats) and limited amounts of other potentially harmful substances (such as sodium). Dr. Fuhrman is the founder of the health equation. H = N/C Health = Nutrients/Calories The means your future health can be predicted by the micronutrient per calorie density of your diet. Micro-nutrient per calorie density is important in devising and recommending menu plans and dietary suggestions for the most effective approach for both weight loss and for preventing and reversing disease.

Another Reason to Eat Your Veggies
northwestfoods
by northwestfoods  4-19-2009
A comprehensive review of the scientific literature reportes: "Vegetables in the Brassica family -- such as broccoli, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts -- are inexpensive yet very nutritive, providing beneficial phytochemicals as well as vitamins, minerals and fiber." This is something that we may have already known, but it is good to see a nice scientific summary that explains the details.

Phenolic Antioxidants from Plants and Mechanism of Action through Redox Metabolism
faroby
by faroby  8-29-2008
Oxidative stress is now suggested to be one of the major causes for the induction of many chronic diseases. In this context, populations consuming diets rich in fruits and vegetables have shown to have lower incidences of many oxidation-linked chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. This has led to a recent surge in interest in the use of diet as a potential tool to manage oxidation-linked diseases. Phenolic phytochemicals with antioxidant properties are now believed to be an important component in fruits and vegetables responsible for these beneficial health effects.

Boiled peanuts protect against illness
pokkets
by pokkets  10-26-2007
Heat and water releases chemicals, that can be destroyed by over cooking. These chemicals-'phytochemicals' while not essential, have antioxidant qualities, that can strengthen, immune, and repair systems. I wonder how peanuts would be boiled in stock, or after a marinating. I might have to make up a few new peanut recipes. Of course there's always Sate- an Asian Peanut and chilli dish-there's a reference under Satay in wikki, but now I know there can be health benefits.
