JUNK SCIENCE revisited
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  12-31-2009
There are no common physical laws between the warming phenomenon in glass houses and the fictitious atmospheric greenhouse effects, (b) there are no calculations to determine an average surface temperature of a planet, (c) the frequently mentioned difference of 33 degrees Celsius is a meaningless number calculated wrongly, (d) the formulas of cavity radiation are used inappropriately, (e) the assumption of a radiative balance is unphysical, (f) thermal conductivity and friction must not be set to zero, the atmospheric greenhouse conjecture is falsified.

Seattle Translation Workers Remember Richard Feynman
jillsimpson01

According to Seattle Translation workers, he believed the day would soon come. Of course, today consumer electronic enthusiasts are struggling to fill up their latest iPod or similar mp3 player with thousands of songs, videos and pictures that all fit snuggly in their pocket, gym bag or purse. While people are no longer interested in storing the Encyclopedia Britanica in a small space, language translation workers will certainly see new opportunities for these types of advancements

Seven Answers to Climate Contrarian Nonsense
JackieDel
by JackieDel  12-1-2009
Although CO2 makes up only 0.04 percent of the atmosphere, that small number says nothing about its significance in climate dynamics. Even at that low concentration, CO2 absorbs infrared radiation and acts as a greenhouse gas, as physicist John Tyndall demonstrated in 1859. The chemist Svante Arrhenius went further in 1896 by estimating the impact of CO2 on the climate; after painstaking hand calculations he concluded that doubling its concentration might cause almost 6 degrees Celsius of warming—an answer not much out of line with recent, far more rigorous computations. Contrary to the contrarians, human activity is by far the largest contributor to the observed increase in atmospheric CO2. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, anthropogenic CO2....click link for more.

The Sun Does a Flip
dmoonme1
by dmoonme1  11-24-2009
Earth’s magnetic field also flips, but with less regularity. Consecutive reversals are spaced 5 thousand years to 50 million years apart. The last reversal happened 740,000 years ago. Some researchers think our planet is overdue for another one, but nobody knows exactly when the next reversal might occur..The Sun's magnetic poles will remain as they are now, with the north magnetic pole pointing through the Sun's southern hemisphere, until the year 2012 when they will reverse again. This transition happens, as far as we know, at the peak of every 11-year sunspot cycle -- like clockwork. Fear not 2012 !! It's a normal thing.

Holger Bech Nielsen on the LHC and the Higgs Particle
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-22-2009    1
Holger Bech Nielsen talks about the theory he co-authored, that God, or the future, could theoretiically somehow sabotage the LHC. He has Asberger's syndrome, therefore his somewhat odd mannerisms, but don't underestimate his intelligence! He has a brilliant mind. I've heard, that he sometimes shows up for work wearing two different shoes and when people point that out to him, he says: "And wouldn't you know, I have another pair just like it at home!" Funny. :p

Getting Closer to String Theory
dopesick
by dopesick  11-13-2009
Without string theory, physicists need two theories to explain how the universe works. General relativity explains gravity, while the other three basic forces are explained by the “standard model.” Moreover, gravity has been very difficult to reconcile with quantum theory, a problem for which string theory offers a solution.

Could we Create Quantum Creatures in the Lab?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-16-2009    1
Water bears, similar to the one pictured here, can survive in a vacuum and might be made to behave like quantum objects Roger Penrose of the University of Oxford believes instead that there is a critical size, or mass, at which bodies cease to become quantum. According to Knight, experiments of the kind proposed by Romero-Isart's team could finally offer a way to distinguish between the mainstream view and Penrose's.

"...Our observations also suggest that the Triangulum Galaxy is being ripped apart by Andromeda." Andromeda, and our own galaxy the Milky Way, are the two largest members of a small cluster of galaxies known as the Local Group. Triangulum, the third largest member of the Local Group, is about one-tenth the size of Andromeda. "Within a few billion years Triangulum will be completely destroyed by Andromeda and its stars will be dispersed throughout the Andromeda halo," says Dr. Widrow. "And a few billion years after that, Andromeda and the Milky Way will collide and merge together to form a giant elliptical galaxy."

thisnamecantbetaken

Initial results suggest that the biggest cooling would occur in the polar regions, which is consistent with theory, and is exactly the place where cooling is most needed. The big advantages of this scheme are that it uses sea water spray, a naturally occurring substance, and that it can be turned off immediately if there are any undesirable consequences.

"you hear a lot of horror stories about such systems, most of them false. French health care is excellent. Canadians with chronic conditions are more satisfied with their system than their U.S. counterparts. And Medicare is highly popular, as evidenced by the tendency of town-hall protesters to demand that the government keep its hands off the program." If a taxpayer funded health care system is so terrible where are the howls of protest from Canadians, Australians, French, Swiss?
