Infertility
dianakee
by dianakee  8-5-2008
In men, hormone disorders, illness, reproductive anatomy trauma and obstruction, and sexual dysfunction can temporarily or permanently affect sperm and prevent conception. Some disorders become more difficult to treat the longer they persist without treatment. The most common identifiable cause of infertility in men is varicocele. This is a condition of enlarged veins in the scrotum that causes abnormalities in the temperature regulation of the testis. If this temperature is elevated by even one degree, sperm and testosterone production are adversely affected. The good news though is that more than one-half of cases of male infertility can be corrected. Treatment may help a couple get pregnant through normal sexual intercourse. Even if you can't get pregnant in this way, you may not need expensive or invasive treatments to get pregnant.

Possible 'Sleep Gene' Identified
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-30-2008    4
When closed, the channel shuts down and the fly sleeps. The insomniac fruit flies had less of the Sleepless-produced protein. The lack of sleep didn't come without consequences. The Sleepless fruit flies lived about half as long as fruit flies that did not carry the mutation. They also experience impaired coordination and restlessness in their few hours of sleep.

Benefits of Longer Doctor Visits Questioned
Allison Van Dusen
by Allison Van Dusen  7-29-2008
We've heard over and over again that doctors today are spending an average of 7 to 11 minutes with patients. And it's always implied that this is a bad thing. But a review of studies in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library shows that patients don't necessarily get a whole lot more out of slightly longer consultations with their physicians. The patients didn't even feel more satisfied following the longer visits, according to the research.

Converting DNA Structures into Music
rj3sp
by rj3sp  7-21-2008    1
Highly complex DNA structures can be tranformed into musical sounds, which might eventually be used to monitor sick patients. In the acoustic translation, harmony represents good health, and discord indicates disease. Finally auditory information will allow surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other physicians to be able to focus on their task and listen at the same time.

West Baghdad: Al Karkh Maternity Hospital To Open Doors
merrie
by merrie  7-9-2008
said Brig. Gen. Jeffery Dorko, Gulf Region Division commander. “Also, working with our Government of Iraq partners, we have constructed 113 of 132 new Primary Healthcare Centers that will treat 8,000 Iraqis each day. “The security situation has improved greatly,” said Atta. “It was very, very bad here for so long. So bad that I refused delivery of vital medical equipment until it was safe from those who would rob and steel from the hospital.” Dr. Atta was painfully aware of the poor security situation after one large delivery of expensive diagnostic equipment that included x-ray machines and other high-end medical equipment was hijacked. “We hope to open the hospital to inpatient care, surgeries and deliveries within two months,” said Dr. Emad Sabry, an anesthesiologist and one of Karkh’s ten senior physicians. “The hospital still needs additional equipment – all types, from beds to incubators and most importantly the pharmaceuticals."
