Monster convicted , but the grief remains
Antara
by Antara  Yesterday 9:38 AM
I will never forget this case. What Patti Cannady, (Anne's mother) witnessed when she found her daughter close to death that morning is unspeakable. RIP Anne Pressly, I pray her family and friends are able to find some solace in his sentence, be it death (well earned) or life in prison. Thank God it can be nothing else.

How to create spectacular HDR pictures
wayne01
by wayne01  Yesterday 4:30 AM
Dream-like colors, perfect lighting, dramatic contrast. Painting? Wrong. Through high definition range (HDR) photography, a simple image of a landscape can look like a masterful creation, engaging the eye and stirring emotions by the rich and surreal scenery.

A quiet voice for gay marriage
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-8-2009    8
Many of these former spouses -- from those who still feel raw resentment toward their exes to those who have reached a mutual understanding -- see the legalization of same-sex marriage as a step toward protecting not only homosexuals but also heterosexuals. If homosexuality was more accepted, they say, they might have been spared doomed marriages followed by years of self-doubt. "It's like you hit a brick wall when they come out," Brooks said. "You think everything is fine and then, boom!" Carolyn Sega Lowengart calls it "retroactive humiliation." It's that embarrassment that washes over her when she looks back at photographs or is struck by a memory and wonders what, if anything, from that time was real. Did he ever love her?

Dana Milbank Is, as Mark Levin Describes Him, "A Punk, a Liar and a Coward"
merrie
by merrie  11-8-2009    1
Constitutional attorney, bestselling author and hit radio show host Mark Levin certainly doesn't mince words. Alerted to Milbank's latest hit piece in The Washington Post, Levin called Milbank out as a propagandist of the first order. The reason: out of literally tens of thousands of patriotic signs and shirts at Thursday's Capitol Hill protest, Milbank picked out a handful as supposedly representative of a crowd he described as "hateful and gruesome." An outraged Levin called Milbank a "punk, a liar and a coward" while challenging him to a debate on his show. Here's a Nazi reference that Milbank might appreciate: I think of him as the Josef Goebbels of his age. He writes patent propaganda in service of the State. And I can prove it. Bubba visited DC for the rally and wandered through the crowd for hours taking scores of photos. I created a montage -- click to zoom if you'd like read the dozens of visible messages -- from his collection.

The First Video Footage of the World's Most Elusive Cat

by celestialdancer  11-8-2009    1
"Andrew Hearn and Joanna Ross, researchers from the United Kingdom’s Global Canopy Programme’s Bornean Wild Cat & Clouded Leopard Project, have been surveying five species of wild cats of Borneo for several years. Their work has uncovered some remarkable findings. Besides capturing the world’s first ever video of the rare cat, the two are also credited for snapping the first photograph of a live bay cat. Based in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, camera trapping and radio-tracking methods are utilized in their research. The program also provides educational materials, community surveys and training courses as well. " (from the article)

Hungary's 'forgotten' war victims
sahara
by sahara  11-7-2009
Back in his living-room, Arpad's three-year-old granddaughter, Jofie, brings me wooden elephants and antelopes to admire and stands quietly listening to our conversation. On the table, Arpad has arranged photographs that he took on his trips east in search of the lost Hungarians. "Maybe that one is your dad," Jofie tells him, wanting so much to be helpful and pointing to a group of men who are holding a cross on a small hill in the city of Baltsi. "That hill," says Arpad, "is made of human bones."

20 Years After The Wall Came Down
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-7-2009
I was 19 when the Berlin Wall came down. I remember vividly the photographs of elated Germans atop the wall, and on either side, hammering and pick-axing their way through a structure that came to epitomize the East-West divide during the Cold War. It's been 20 years since the wall fell. MSNBC is featuring a number of fascinating articles on their website, many with archival footage and video of the event. Anyone with an interest in this topic should definitely check out the MSNBC materials.

Fortresses Of Solitude And Sanctuary
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-4-2009    1
Many of us have seen photographs of the Buddhist monasteries in Asia, perched precariously among the clouds. But, did you know that Greece, like Asia, has a number of similar architectural wonders? Today's San Francisco Chronicle ran the first photograph I clipped below, which I founded stunning. This particular monastery is known as Roussanou Monastery in Meteora, Greece. The word "meteora" is typically translated as "suspended in the air," a reference to the lofty sandstone pillars on which the monasteries are built. Roussanou is not the only such monastery in the region; in fact, there are 6. I clipped some additonal photos from Meteora, which I hope you will enjoy. They are, in the order presented: Agios Nikoloas Anapafsa Monastery, Agias Triados (Holy Trinity) Monastery, and the Grand Meteron Monastery. My personal favorite, however, is the last picture. Though it shows the scaffolding of repair-work, it also shows off the beautiful hues of blue I associate

History-Making Edits, Before Photoshop
sahara
by sahara  11-3-2009
While some people enjoy adding individuals to their images, others prefer to edit them out – as in the cases of these photographs of Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini respectively. In each of the first three photos there was a political compatriot who, after falling from favor, was removed entirely from the scene and thus erased from a part of history. In the final image, a horse handler was edited out to convey a greater sense of grandeur. Perhaps it is simply selective and subjective, but it seems strangely fitting in some way that most of the edits of of American heroes are additive while those of other infamous world leaders are subtractive – but who knows what other manipulations we have yet to catch.

Check out Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars" series (Red Mars, Blue Mars, Green Mars) for a take on what is reasonably possible. It's a great read.
