Scientology Critics
roxanholyn
by roxanholyn  Yesterday 11:52 PM
This site explains the social phenomena that Scientology and other religions have with ex-members. Ex-members of religions are called apostates. This is an interesting site as it shows the pattern apostates exhibit who leave any religion. But this site especially focuses on Scientology ex-members or apostates.

Good Advice From Thomas Jefferson
sahara
by sahara  Yesterday 12:40 PM
"In the fevered state of our country, no good can ever result from any attempt to set... fiery zealots to rights either in fact or principle. They are determined as to the facts they will believe, and the opinions on which they will act...it is not for a man of sense to dispute the road with such an animal." So true, yet sometimes very hard to avoid these disputes! Most of the people I know are fairly decent and can respectfully disagree with one another, thankfully. Then there are those who I have to try very hard to bite my tongue and walk away from, so as not to sink to their level...

Palin defends Limbaugh's Use of 'Retard"
Steve Savage
by Steve Savage  2-8-2010    24
This is unabashed hypocrisy by Sarah Palin, pure and simple. I took Bobby Rutan to task for referring to the lower IQ'd as "retarded" on another clip. Indeed, Sarah Palin took Rahm Emanuel to task for his use of the word "retarded," using her position as grandmother of a Downs Syndrome child as justification. Agreeing with someone like Limbaugh because he shares a common political philosophy, does not justify the use of the word by any stretch of the imagination. I am sure that that this incident is very disappointing to all those who support ed, and support, Sarah Palin. All of those named, need to get their acts together because some sincere apologies are in order.

X-Philes: Philosophy Meets the Real World
dcoda
by dcoda  2-5-2010
"Intentional action" is one of the prominent themes in this new philosophy. What do we mean when we say that someone did something intentionally? Most philosophers assume that we'd all agree that this is a question of the actor's state of mind. Experimentalist Joshua Knobe of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill asked college students: If a businessman interested only in profits knowingly harms the environment, should we say he did so intentionally? The students answered yes. Yet if the same businessman knowingly helped the environment, they said no. Apparently, intentionality depends not just on an actor's state of mind, but also on the outcome he or she produces.

NOTHING (Philosophy)---CHAPTER 5 OF OUR EXISTENTIAL PREDICAMENT by JAMES PARK
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  2-5-2010
" After a while we may recognize that we have two kinds of ‘emptiness’: One kind of hollowness can be filled by “the good life”. But the other remains empty no matter what we try. Only after concerted efforts to fill our Existential Void with the things that usually satisfy ordinary longings are we convinced that our existential hollowness is ultimately unfillable. Those momentary experiences of happiness and ‘fulfillment’ "which kept deceiving us that we were on the right path" turn out to be distractions and dead-ends, techniques for covering our inner Void, not for filling it. Even in the midst of affluence, success, love"the perfect life" the hollow Void screams thru the comforting fog. In our secret depths, we still feel utterly empty and helpless."

X-Phi : Philosophical Underpinnings for Future?
dcoda
by dcoda  2-4-2010
Lately I've been learning about experimental philosophy, another archaic revival harking back to the times when philosophy and science were indistinguishable from each other. Taking philosophy "to the streets" with experiments it contrasts with the familiar "arm chair" philosopher types gathering dust. I'm noticing that the image at the bottom didn't copy well and there doesn't seem to be a way to edit once a post gets to this point (something we can change in the future????) so you'll just have to go to the website, its a list of topics.

Obama’s Getting Angry And Desperate… And It’s Showing
merrie
by merrie  2-2-2010    6
 * The American public (by innuendo) for his rapid decline in the polls He has threatened to use “Executive Orders” to bypass Congress if they don’t advance his agenda. Yes, those were warning sirens you heard in your head. Heed them. Forget about whether or not Obama can legally do this. He will do it if he feels it’s the only way to accomplish his goals, and then he’ll challenge us to undo the damage. Bet on it. With his personal failure obvious to everyone but himself, Obama has adopted the Saul Alinsky ”Rules for Radicals” philosophy of “Step on the gas” in pushing forward before we have a chance to get rid of him legally (sobering thought: We have three more years of this sentence with Obama. So how does that “Hope” and “Change” look to you now? A year later, much of that public has awakened from their stupor to realize just what America would be like under Obama’s dream/nightmare. Gradually, America woke to find an extreme radical

The Deficit of Trust
merrie
by merrie  2-1-2010    1
" Let’s invest in our people without leaving them a mountain of debt. Let’s meet our responsibility to the citizens who sent us here. Let’s try common sense. To do that, we have to recognize that we face more than a deficit of dollars right now. We face a deficit of trust " deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years. To close that credibility gap we must take action on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue to end the outsized influence of lobbyists; to do our work openly; and to give our people the government they deserve. " Wouldn’t it be great to have a President who talked about trusting the ability of free people to make wise decisions? Instead, the current occupant frets about the “deficit of trust,” even as the federal budget deficit soars past a trillion dollars, and his third request to raise the ceiling of the national debt " after only a single year in office " has brought it past $14.3 trillion dollars.

MARC THIESSEN: WATERBOARDED TERRORIST ASKED CIA TO WATERBOARD HIS COLLEAGUES.......

You find techniques that you know are safe, that will not harm the terrorist, that will not cause them severe pain nor any lasting injury, that are within our laws and give him something to resist."
