Lu Guang from People’s Republic of China won the $30,000 W. Tough Teachings to Ease the Mind
Lexica
by Lexica  9-22-2009
This reminds me of something Cheri Huber has said: "Depression is the greatest ally a person can have in the pursuit of ending suffering. Your best spiritual friend." At first glance, it's one of those "you MUST be kidding" things. But if you look deeper, it's true. Somebody who isn't depressed, who has just the normal level of discontent and dissatisfaction, can muddle along for years without it ever getting "bad enough" to compel them to do something. A person with depression doesn't have that luxury: either I figure out how to not suffer this way, or I kill myself.

Convergent evolution
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-14-2009
The huge fossil teeth of megalodon had been known for centuries and were once believed to be the fossilized tongues of dragons. Agassiz, noting that great white shark teeth and the fossil megalodon teeth were both serrated, lumped megalodon into the same genus, Carcharodon, (from the Greek karcharos, meaning sharp or jagged, and odous, meaning tooth). Agassiz was not, however, making an evolutionary judgment. In 1835, a young Charles Darwin was just then visiting the Galapagos Islands. There would be no theory of evolutionary descent for nearly 25 years. In fact, the brilliant Agassiz, who later became a professor at Harvard and the leading figure of natural history in the United States, forever resisted Darwin’s revolutionary ideas. Rejecting biological evolution, Agassiz defined species as a “thought of God.” His classification scheme signified nothing about shark origins. But over the next century, the idea that great whites evolved from megalodon took hold. << more at the

Glass Microbiology - Luke Jerram
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  9-4-2009
Quite an amazing display of glass art sculptures. Microbes never looked quite so beautiful. Mind you, under the microscope they probably look awesome. The whole article is well worth a read. Their is a slideshow of the various microbes and short bits of info about the various diseases ie. small pox, HIV etc. "The sculptures were designed in consultation with virologists from the University of Bristol using a combination of different scientific photographs and models. They were made in collaboration with glassblowers Kim George, Brian Jones and Norman Veitch."

The REAL "Inconvenient Truth": Cell Phones and Bee Colony Collapse
blueridge
by blueridge  9-3-2009    4
Honey bees are in effect saying, "Can you hear us now?" The consequences of inaction on this are real and enormous. But unlike oil, coal or "carbon emissions", not even Al Gore or Obama will advocate giving up or curbing cell phones or towers, even though the hard facts on this are much more threatening to agriculture, and by consequence human life, the economy of foods, and the entire eco-system than the mythical "global warming" doomsday scenerio. Cell phones are America's and the world's unnecessary CONVENIENCE that apparently are not even being debated by the Climate people, willing to sacrifice the pollination of food crops by honey bees for cell chat. The buzz is real, but governments are not moving to regulate, and are likely too afraid of consumers who do not care about consequences any more than those who throw fast food trash out the window of their cars. There is also hard evidence of radiation from cell phones directly damaging human health.
