POPSNate Phelps: My father is addicted to hate Nate Phelps is the son of Fred Phelps , leader of the hate-filled Westboro Baptist Church. More: violence was a fact of life in our home, and is interwoven from my earliest memories as a child… In terms of knowing how to administer punishment, my father was an adept. Seven or eight blows would be enough to cause the skin to swell and bruise. However, if he administered a few blows, and then waited five to ten minutes before the next round, this gave the damaged tissue time to swell and stretch the skin tight. The new round of blows would cause that skin to split and bleed.… When my mother tried to intervene in some of his more brutal beatings, he’d turn on her and punish her, also. Proverbs 13:24 was core to his actions: He that spareth his rod hateth his son. But there was a fundamental contradiction. He claimed that this punishment was done out of love for his children; yet as he beat us, he’d scream his hatred at us also.

POPSFree Speech: Court Reverses $5 Million Ruling Against Gay, Jew, and Soldier-Hating Westboro Baptist
They'll also target Jewish temples: "The bigots will protest on Saturday in front of Congregation Beth Elohim on Eighth Avenue in Park Slope at 9:45 am, at Union Temple on Eastern Parkway in Prospect Heights at 10 am and the Kane Street Synagogue in Cobble Hill at 12:30 pm on the eve of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. On Wednesday, church spokeswoman Shirley Phelps-Roper said the rallies were not anti-Jewish or anti-gay. 'How about we call it an ‘Obey your God’ rally?' she said. 'You Jews and gays have got to put away your false gods, your idols and your filthy way of life.' She added that 'God hates the disobedient.' ... 'We picked these weekends because these are the high holidays,' she said. 'You Jews broke the covenant with God. The beast is going to bring the nations to march upon Jerusalem. Your houses will be destroyed and your women ravaged. It’s going to make the Holocaust, the Babylonian captivity and the destruction of the Temple look like a tea party.

POPSSwim Faster than Phelps with this Sweet Dolphin / Whale Fin I have always had a fascination with scuba diving and snorkeling. And, more recently, our 10 year old has shown some interest in masks, fins, and snorkels. And her swimming skills right now, are getting pretty close to mine already. She definitely likes being out in the water and checking things out. But, not too long ago, we saw an AMAZING new invention that can allow you to swim as fast (or faster) than Michael Phelps. And that caught our attention. Not to mention - it is a freaking cool idea. I FINALLY found it last night when scouring the web. And I had to share it with you. Happy trails!

POPSPhelps Bounces Back from Loss with Record in 200-Meter Butterfly Michael Phelps broke his own record in the 200-meter butterfly on day four of the FINA world swimming championships. The victory came just 24 hours after the disappointment of his silver-medal finish in the 200 free. After that race, Phelps went back to his hotel, traded text messages with friends for an hour and then got his first good night of sleep since his arrival in Rome 10 days ago. One friend's supportive text message read: "I know you hate getting second, so if you want to call and let out some emotion, I'll be glad to listen." But Phelps has always been the type who responds better to butt kicking from defeats than back patting from friends. Tyler Clary, the other U.S. entrant in the race, said he could see it, too. "I could tell by his demeanor in the ready room that he looked like he was going after it," said Clary, who placed fifth. "He just looked like nothing was getting in his way."

POPSCoach Threatens to Pull Phelps
But no one thought this was a fair fight. Phelps' coach even threatened to pull his star from future international meets unless the governing body acts with more urgency to get rid of suits that have rendered the record book obsolete. "The suits make a difference," Biedermann said. "I hope there will be a time when I can beat Michael Phelps without these suits. I hope next year. I hope it's really soon." Phelps can't wait. "It's going to be fun next year," he said, "when swimming is back to swimming." Phelps took his first major individual loss in four years, doled out by a swimmer barely known outside his country until he got to Rome. In the space of three days, the 22-year-old German wiped Ian Thorpe's name out of the record book in the 400 free, then he took down the winningest Olympian with a time of 1 minute, 42.00 seconds, nearly a second faster than Phelps' 1:42.96 at Beijing. "Biedermann just took off," Phelps said. "He took it to a new level in that race."

POPSFred Phelps is a registered Democrat. He campaigned for Clinton and Gore. Parallels: The lefties in general criticize the invasion of Iraq, supported Hussein's right to continued dictatorship, sent protesters (and elected officials) to Baghdad decrying the U.S. invasion, declare that the U.S. deserved September 11th and that it's Tony Blairs fault that London's mass transits were bombed, and continuously praise Castro for his excellent management of Cuba (great health-care and schools, natch). And when push came right down to shove in the 2004 election, Bill Clinton advised John Kerry to drop support for gay marriage (you know, Bill Clinton, the "first black President" who signed the Defense of Marriage Act and who utterly caved in on the gays in the military issue; his wife, apparently, suffers from the same lack of conviction).

POPSPhelps...the family that spews hate Since the mid-1990s, Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) has spelled out its core message in neon-rainbow picket signs that read, “God Hate Fags.” In a series of outrageous stunts, members of WBC have disrupted the funerals of servicemen killed in Iraq for supporting a “Fag-loving” country, protested a memorial for victims of the 2006 Sago mine disaster claiming it was God’s punishment on the US for tolerating homosexuality, and picketed the University of Wisconsin, where three students had recently died in a house fire, claiming the parents were to blame for “teaching them to be whores and bastards.”

POPSTwo-word refutation to "The Gathering Storm" anti-gay marriage ad: "Fred Phelps!"
More: But the point here is that Fred Phelps is a free man. His only legal troubles stem from instances of direct physical assault -- not from the hateful content of his beliefs. So when the folks at NOM insist that their opposition to same-sex marriage is a matter of "religious liberty," the liberty they're talking about has to be the liberty to exceed the Fred Phelps standard -- the liberty not just to restrict membership on religious grounds, or just to preach against homosexuality as a sin, or to condemn and denounce homosexuals as people hated by God, but the liberty, apparently, to go beyond all that, beyond anything even Fred Phelps has imagined. Fred Phelps is a free man, so if you think your freedom is going to be restricted, you must be planning to outdo Fred Phelps. So there's the two-word answer for every…dubious claim about being persecuted or punished or threatened or jailed or whatever for their anti-gay beliefs.
