"Space Internet" to Link Worlds by 2011?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-11-2009
DTN is already used for earthbound projects. Scientists, for instance, are using the system to tag and track wildlife with a data-delivery capacity far more reliable than past satellite-based networks. DTN can also bring broadband Web to remote areas with few communication structures, connecting remote humans such as the Arctic's Sami people via satellite with far shorter time lags. The U.S. military has also embraced the technology to help keep lines of communication open in remote areas—or when other infrastructure is destroyed. So far, DTN doesn't seem to have a catch, experts say.

The Chinese strategy remains hidden, to execute a grand paradigm shift that will take tacit control of the United States, which is now in disarray. Its leadership is too busy being co-opted by the Wall Street banksters.

Recalibrating Prices (after our wages go)
baydawg
by baydawg  2-22-2009
Consider housing starts, which have fallen to their lowest level in 50 years. That’s bad news for the near term. It means that spending on construction will fall even more. But it also means that the supply of houses is lagging behind population growth, which will eventually prompt a housing revival. Or consider the plunge in auto sales. Again, that’s bad news for the near term. But at current sales rates, as the finance blog Calculated Risk points out, it would take about 27 years to replace the existing stock of vehicles. Most cars will be junked long before that, either because they’ve worn out or because they’ve become obsolete, so we’re building up a pent-up demand for cars.

Expert: World is Entering a Little Ice Age
pkronfield
by pkronfield  8-20-2008
At present, assured the world is going through a transition phase where solar activity diminishes considerably, "so that in two years or so, there will be a small ice age that lasts from 60 to 80 years," and the immediate consequence of this He added, will be drought. Here's hoping Algore freezes his gonads off...whoops... forgot he has no gonads....

How did the Universe Begin ?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-24-2008    5
The no-boundary wave function also states that space-time was not what we see today at the outset of universal expansion. “When the universe started out,” Hartle explains, “there wasn’t ordinary space-time. Instead of three space directions, as we have now, there were four space directions. At some point, a transition was made to ordinary space-time.”

How crises Point to a Better Future
iskandar
by iskandar  6-15-2008
"Transitions announce themselves in the language of crisis. We are in a time of turbulence as old patterns give way and new ones form. The multiple crises today signal a system transformation operating at the scale of the planet. Transformation is distinct from adaptation, which is the normal process of incremental adjustment to new conditions. Transformations are rare moments in history when dominant societal structures cannot cope with emerging developments and change in fundamental ways. With the converging lines of crises we face today, we may be entering a perfect storm of destabilizing stress."

Strange Things Afoot-Run For Your Life!
carrerinyes

 3) Papers falling into the trashcan. Please refer your boss to appropriate experts in astronomy, mechanics, and theoretical physics. During this dangerous time, it is essential that all soul-deadened middle-managers understand it is simply not your fault your assignments won't stay on the desk. 4) Fat people falling off diets. Please refer to your body in that high-school bikini you can still "fit into." 5) Ice-cream falling off cones. This only happens when you are derelict in your ice-cream eating duties. Have you no shame? 6) Time falling off clocks. Despite the widespread transition to digital, this is expected to remain a significant problem in the coming months, as the minute and hour hands alike are pulled down swiftly toward the poles of 6 and 12 (6 + 6). Inconclusive data is leading some scientists to conjecture the end of the world is near, and to encourage their lab assistants to experiment further with observed phenomenon No. 1. Brain Waves Pattern Themselves After Rhythms Of Nature
Mohir
by Mohir  2-20-2008    3
Although the bulk of his work involves deriving equations, Cowan's findings mesh well with laboratory data generated on the cerebral cortex and electroencephalograms. His latest findings show that the same mathematical tools physicists use to describe the behavior of subatomic particles and the dynamics of liquids and solids can now be applied to understanding how the brain generates its various rhythms.

The Age for Rootless Wandering

David Brooks' saving grace is that despite his myopic politics, occasionally he thinks up something very interesting. I saw this happen to my Graduating class. They were spread all over the world. We are a new Lost Generation, disinherited by the absolutism that secured our forefathers in their insulated identities and simplified social contexts. Deconstruction, and post-modernism, now seems to me a natural process far more than a philosophy.
