Tobacco Underground
sahara
by sahara  10-9-2009    1
At a time when nations are increasingly trying to crack down on smoking, smugglers put cheap cigarettes into the hands of those most vulnerable — young people and the poor. In addition, the trade is pushing the supply steadily into the black market, selling cut-rate cigarettes of often dubious quality. Of special concern is the advent of a massive counterfeiting industry. Once a minor problem, today underground factories in China, Paraguay, and Eastern Europe manufacture literally billions of fake cigarettes — Marlboros, Camels, 555s, Mild Sevens — an uncontrolled industry that law enforcement is only beginning to grapple with. Many of the smokes are made from the lowest quality tobacco, full of stem and sawdust, and spiked with unusually high levels of nicotine. Other packs contain far worse. Tests reveal that counterfeit cigarettes carry a bevy of products that could further shorten even a heavy smoker’s life: metals such as cadmium, pesticides, arsenic, rat poison, and human feces.

Safe,Affordable Water
robm47
by robm47  10-5-2009
You've heard me say, "I'll have my bottled water, thank you very much!" But, that's because our tap water isn't safe. I want to make it clear that bottled water isn't a solution. It is only a safer choice at the moment. The solution is safe, clean, free water for everyone! We must invest in public water resources and stop polluting our lakes and rivers. Water isn't a commodity. It's the birthright of every living thing on the planet!

New film seeks answer to mystery of vanishing bees
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-3-2009    4
Other factors could also contribute, it added, including the fact that bees are being transported long distances to pollinate single crops, or monocultures, rather than producing honey. "They are one of our most ancient allies," Henein said in an interview in London. "We actually depend on honey bees to eat. May be out of selfishness it raises a red flag." Langworthy added: "It's a broader issue about the system of agriculture. People are going to have to rethink it and maybe they don't want to. It really will have to be driven by the general public's call for change."

Up is Down, Peace is War, Love is Hate - Huh?
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-17-2009
When you look at how we have made being at war seem nothing more than a video game, is it any wonder that people think the war in Iraq is over, that we are not really at war in Somalia, that Afghanistan is a "good war" like WWII was? I am not sure anymore what it will take for people to wake up to the facts that our economy depends on war, climate suicide and agriculture-based cancers (our steady diet of pesticides and fertilizers in food and water - what do you think is driving pancreatic cancer epidemic?). I do hope that sharing via Amplify helps to dirve real change in not just hand wringing.

Build a Beneficial Bug House
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-14-2009
For those of you who are gardeners, you know the benefits of having a diverse population of insects in your yard. Encouraging beneficials into your garden also helps eliminate the need for chemical pesticides. Giving the beneficials a place to stay helps ensure you will have plenty of protection against those ‘other’ bugs that like to eat up all your hard work. Don’t worry about attracting wasps, yellow-jackets or hornets, they build their own nests and will leave this one alone. This is more for the over 3,500 species of solitary bees http://www.attra.org/attra-pub/nativebee.html . Without these bees we would not have seed set or fruit formation. So, please, do what you can to help. Here’s where the plans are: http://www.instructables.com/id/Beneficial-Bug-Houses/

Giant Dams: Mutli-Threats to Humans and Planet
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-4-2009
Hydropower dams may play a role in creating and releasing methane but the greater danger has not yet been investigated or evaluated. What's that? What effect(s) does the disruption and rapid change of the larger natural system cause? Multiple dams on the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers aided river transportation and controlled some annual flooding beginning in the 1930s. The result(s)? The Mississippi Delta not only stopped growing, it has begun to disappear. The natural barrier that helped to protect New Orleans from storm surges undermined - literally. Redistribution of soil along all the rivers - history and greater reliance on fertilizers and pesticides. There is now a 70 mile dead zone at the end of the Mississippi that is growing each year. The Three Gorges Dam complex in China - its impact(s)? Flyways of migratory birds disrupted/altered. A role in the spread of Avian Flu? Who's got a bandage for my foot, I think we shot ourselves again!

Does Washing Really Reduce Pesticides?
fergalbarry
by fergalbarry  9-2-2009
I'm warming to this topic. Scald fruit with boiling water, and you'll often literally see the chemicals as the heat changes the compounds and makes them visible. But ya need fruit for a good diet, don't ya? And I hear some of the "organic" stuff isn't "really" organic! Dilemmas more important than Mac or PC? Sadly, they're out there. :(
