Cluster Bomb Olympics With White House Backdrop (No, not the Onion)
papananook
by papananook  Today 9:14 AM
Why: To generate public awareness of cluster bombs just two days prior to the negotiation of a global cluster bomb ban treaty in Dublin, Ireland on May 19. More than half the world’s nations will attend, but the U.S. government has refused to participate. Who: Organized by the US Campaign to Ban Landmines and co-sponsored by Amnesty International, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, CIVIC, Democracy in Action, Friends Committee on National Legislation (Quakers), Jewish Voice for Peace, Network of Spiritual Progressives, and Veterans for Peace. The event is open to participation by all ages. Those in attendance can sign a petition urging the Pentagon to stop using cluster bombs, which cause unacceptable harm to civilians. The U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines (USCBL) is a coalition of approximately 500 U.S.-based human rights, humanitarian, faith-based, children's, peace, disability, veterans', medical, development, academic, and environmental organizations dedicated to a

McCain And The G.I. Bill
merrie
by merrie  Today 12:37 AM
As this helpful Boston Globe piece explains, the original bill was curtailed during the relative peace of the 1980s, capping benefits at just under $10,000 per year. The new bill, which Webb introduced with Chuck Hagel and Frank Lautenberg and which John Warner has cosponsored, would raise the cap on the benefit to match the cost of the most expensive public university or college in any given state.

In the report, they noted that "Islam seems incapable of separating itself from the severe abuse of women" and that Muslims "harbor an innate predisposition to extreme violence and close-minded prejudice.

American Generations and Historical Change
zizzy
by zizzy  Yesterday 1:30 AM    1
Crisis. A Crisis is a decisive era of secular upheaval. The values regime propels the replacement of the old civic order with a new one. Wars are waged with apocalyptic finality. Examples of Crisis eras include the Wars of the Roses (1459-1487), the Spanish Armada Crisis (1569-1594), the colonial Glorious Revolution (1675-1704), the American Revolution (1773-1794), the American Civil War (1860-1865), and the twin emergencies of the Great Depression and World War II (1932-1945), and now possibly the present time from September 11th, 2001. High. A High is an era between a Crisis and an Awakening. The most recent High was seen between World War II and the Consciousness Revolution. William Strauss and Neil Howe, in their books Generations (ISBN 0-688-11912-3) (1991) and The Fourth Turning (1997), divide Anglo-American history into saecula, or seasonal cycles of history

RIP Irena Sendler - Lost Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore
willhelm
by willhelm  5-13-2008    1
"Mrs. Sendler used her contacts at orphanages and convents to keep Jewish children safe until the war's end, often under Christianized names. To alert nuns to a new group of children ready for pick up, she could write, "I have clothing for the convent." The intention was to return all the children to their parents, although the death rate of the adult population made the task largely impossible. But for years Mrs. Sendler guarded the real names of the children and their parents, writing them on tissue paper and burying the lists in jars under an apple tree at an associate's home. "

Justice comes from lifting oppression ..." Unbelievable. Outrageous. Who will be called to account for this crime?

Leaked Saudi View. 'Border dispute' Existing UN Resolutions Solution
righthand
by righthand  5-11-2008    1
Prince Saud al-Faisal has been the discreet voice of Saudi Arabian diplomacy for more than 30 years, and he spoke with unchallenged authority at the recent meeting of the Quartet of Middle East peacemakers, giving what turned out to be a bleak assessment of the current negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The situation was "dire", he told the assembled dignitaries, including Condoleezza Rice, Tony Blair and Ban Ki-moon. "Many dangers loom. It seems we have reached a stage that I can only describe as a morass." Such pessimism is not big news, though Saud's gloomy remarks were made, characteristically, behind closed doors at London's Lancaster House. It is certainly hard to find anyone who harbours much hope that there is a way out of the current impasse. ... Guardian

Obama's Israel Shuffle--Can He Be Trusted to Change War Policy?
blueridge
by blueridge  5-11-2008    11
He plays to the Israeli Lobby in order to win the election, and they will hold him to it should he gain office. (Hillary and McCain are owned already). The desire for power is what changes, or entraps, men. If they help him win, they will "own" him, like they do most of Congress and every President, which drives the "war on terrorism", for Israel, and foreign policy. Just why does Bill Kristol (neocon leader) speak so well of Obama? Video here.

When will they ever Learn, when will they ever learn, when will they ever learn
righthand
by righthand  5-10-2008    1
Previously, I've offered the Bush gang some undeserved advice. It was simple and even more obvious with time. Whatever instinct they have to do something, then don't. Do the opposite or do nothing. Everything they touch turns to dust. Just a few: Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, Iran, Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, waterboarding, rendition, POWs, Dollar, Oil, Economy, Hamas, Gaza, West Bank, Katrina, civil rights, prisons, racism, FEAR. Only one state has prospered and at the US expense. It's economy roars ahead based on false security and terrorism. Iraq's government partly rules Baghdad's Green Zone. Now Lebanon's government may in time rule a Beirut Green Zone. Only Israel benefits. Bush ignored the democratically elected Hamas in Gaza. Then the US provoked a Hamas military takeover. Why? So Israel could practice judicial assassination and Hamas wouldn't talk peace? Never. And when Hamas through Carter offered the peace to the Zionists? The lamest excuse ever?

Last Gasp For Olmert's Political Career?
merrie
by merrie  5-9-2008
Calls for his resignation came from left, right and center although all acknowledged that by vowing, as he did Thursday night, to resign if charged, Olmert had won himself time. The investigation will probably take another month or two. "The public doesn't have too much more patience," Colette Avital, a member of Parliament from the Labor Party, a partner in the governing coalition with Olmert's Kadima party, asserted in a typical comment. "He is simply discredited. It may take some more weeks or even months, but he won't be able to go on." "We may end up with an Iranian mini-state in Lebanon as well as one in Gaza, and the political trouble in Jerusalem makes it much harder for Israel to react as it should," Steinitz added. "But, of course, this is not just a problem for Israel but for the whole Western world, especially the United States and France."

Cool Globes Public Art Exhibit: Hot Ideas For a Cooler Planet
urbanlife
by urbanlife  5-8-2008    1
"Cool Globes" is public art with a purpose – to increase awareness about and motivate people to implement simple solutions in their day-to-day lives to help combat global warming. I am showing you the 2007 Globes from Chicago: To remind you that from April 17 to September 1, 2008, a selection of globes will once again be on display in Chicago, Washington, DC and San Francisco. Cool Globes debuted in Chicago on June 1, 2007 with over 100 sculpted globes. Cool Globes was launched in Chicago because of the City's leadership and dedication to promoting environmentally sound policies. For the 2007 globes, there was a charity auction of select large and mini-globes from the Cool Globes exhibit. The auction raised $500,000 to fund the expansion of environmental education programs.
