POPSCatholic Patriarchy If your reaction to this clip is a blase "who cares" then the odds predict that you have a penis. It's remarkable that after centuries this outmoded way of thinking still holds sway. And what's even more remarkable is that women are sometimes responsible in not more forcefully opposing this outdated dogma.

POPSKara Walker Art Exhibit "My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor" I had the good fortune to see Kara Walker's exhibit at the Hammer Museum hear in Los Angeles. I'm not an artist, nor do I have an educational background in art, but I have to say I was beyond impressed with her work. Her pieces are undoubtedly controversial, especially in an era where I've actually heard people say out loud "There is no racism" and "forget slavery...it was so long ago!" Her artwork, a mix of murals, sketches, wall projections, puppetry, and video made me think deeply about the existence -both past and present- of oppression in the forms of racism and patriarchy. I proudly hale Kara Walker as one bad ass Invincible Sista.

POPSWomen With the horror of the recent "honor" killing in Georgia as the backdrop, I'm inspired to remind everyone that women die at the hands of male family members every day in the US. In fact, 4 times a day. I'm tired of the Right acting like they really care about women and gender equality. The only mention of women in the 2004 Republican platform is their insistence that if a woman gets pregnant, by law she'll stay that way until delivery. I went to a number of right wing websites and typed the words "violence against women" into their search engines. If any stories were listed at all, they were about honor killings in the Muslim world. The Right wrap their "concern" for women in the cloak of anti-Islamic rhetoric concerning honor killings and are dumb, deaf, and blind to all else. Enough. Islam is not the problem. Patriarchy is.

POPSThe Sadomasochism of Power and Politics:Fromm Sadism and masochism as broad concepts (not excluding control of SM impulses by individuals) are key to Erich Fromm's psychoanalytical interpretation of how personality, ideology and politics are interwined.

POPSLetting go of our defenses Excerpt:s: “Lenin was surely right. There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose.” "Inflation in the United States means a weaker dollar, and a weaker dollar means a weakened United States. It also means more tanks and jet fighters and missiles for Moscow and Beijing. As America sinks in self-absorption, Russia and China look outward. The suffering of the Russian and Chinese people is centuries old. They are adapted to suffering, but America has adapted itself to hedonistic expectations. In an attempt to cling to prosperity, America is ready to let go of its defenses."

POPSAre You Washed In The Blood? "A campaign had emerged to promote the idea that the Bible was entirely without error, even in matters of history and science. Some feared that more liberal theological positions were being taught in the convention's seminaries. n August, he visited the White House. In "Our Endangered Values," Carter recalls Smith saying, at the close of their meeting, "We are praying, Mr. President, that you will abandon secular humanism as your religion." HMMMMM . . . where have I heard that before? I thinky maybe here on CM, yes I do. I think I have had that charge leveled on me that I MUST be a secular humanist. God FORBID that I promote peace, I MUST be a pacifist -(even though Jesus was the ultimate pacifist). God FORBID I must be a voice against violence, homophobia, patriarchy, sexism, and racism. I MUST be secular. God wouldn't want those values; the only values God wants are crotch based.

POPSWhy 99.9% of men should be feminists Wake up, kids. Feminism ain't about hating on men. It's about freeing ourselves, male and female, from The Man. It's about ending a system that's unfair, unhealthy and outright dangerous to most of the population, regardless of gender.

POPSPatriarchy in "The Office" “The Office” embodies many of the hegemonic norms pertaining to patriarchy and gender roles. As Alan Johnson describes patriarchy, “It’s about the standards of feminine beauty and masculine toughness, images of feminine vulnerability and masculine protectiveness, of older men coupled with young women, of elderly women alone. It’s about defining women and men as opposites, about the ‘naturalness’ of male aggression, competition, and dominance and of female caring, cooperation, and subordination. It’s about the valuing of masculinity and maleness and the devaluing of femininity and femaleness” (Johnson, 94). These views make constant appearances in “The Office.” In the show, the men are seen as aggressive and outgoing, while the women are seen as gentle and passive. The men are in control of almost everything that goes on in the office, besides the all female party planning committee. From Spencer's Gender & Pop Culture Blog on "The Office"

POPSOh, the humanity... Especially. ESPECIALLY!!!! Ugh. I was loathe to post this, partly b/c who needs this kind of depression-inducing lunacy the day after Christmas and partly b/c I was afraid it might not be the best introduction to the feminist, patriarchy-busting wonder that is Austin-based "Twisty." But at a recent holiday party, I overheard a distressing convo b/w a so-called feminist who was well-meaning, but an idjit, and so I'm taking it as a sign to get the right info out there sooner, rather than later. For those new to her site, "Twisty" is one of a rare breed of feminists who is not only sharp as a tack but hilarious, to boot. And I mean deeply, deeply smart and deeply, deeply hilarious. She also writes knowledgeably about important things like where to find good Mexican food and how to get through cancer with your sanity and wits intact, if not your breastal area. Read, read, read--especially before commenting. Caveat patriarchy...
