Weighing Parole For Killers
debbyski
by debbyski  7-14-2008    5
I guess we could argue that there should be no parole for killers, and that would be a black and white argument. I'm sure black and white feels pretty damn good to the victim's families. One thing I would like to say is I think some on CM feel as though clippers must agree 100 percent with the clip or we wouldn't clip the article. Not true, at least in my case and I welcome polite, concise, adult conversation on any clip. Opposing views are always welcome and can lead to meaningful dialog and in the spirit of that, I feel this clip asks the reader to dig deep on the concept of forgiveness in our society. Is that concept worth considering? The answer can be a very complex one with good arguments on both sides.

Supreme Court Rejects Death Penalty for Child Rape
Sunira
by Sunira  6-26-2008
Apparently raping a kid doesn't get you death penalty but "offenses against the state" like being a spy can get you a death sentence. Sure. That makes sense, Supreme Court. /sarcasm

Half America would be on Death Row.
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  6-26-2008    1
If it were up to the R party, half of Amer. would be on death row. I exaggerate but you have to ask...what’s wrong with these people? They can't see society for the people. Sick acts do occur that we’d like to cure. But with brains, one size doesn’t fit all. Many take a beating before maturity, so we wind up with depraved sins by sickos. If laws put all sickos to death there would have to be many death rows. Killing doesn’t stop such acts and sets an example that murder is an answer. Life without parole is cost effective. It takes alota $$ before a slaying occurs, life sentences are cheaper. (to those who tout PRISONS COST US TAXPAYERS MUCH MOOLAH, KILL THE BUMS!) Capital punishment is a fact in this brutal society and the judges must decide what it's slated for. It should only be for homicide. If it starts to pertain to other crimes, we slide backwards and kids will hang for stealing apples. Their legs must be weighted cause small bodies are too light to choke a life away. :-(

Judicial Barbarism
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  6-26-2008    1
Although I am an opponent of the death penalty, I think this was the wrong decision. Why? Because it enshrines barbarism in our legal system. By saying that the death penalty is not warranted unless the victim of the crime was also killed, the justices have defined our legal system as an instrument not of justice but of vengeance. Justice is the protection of the weak, and the assurance that wrongs, once committed, will not be repeated. Justice should not spring from vindictive passion, but instead from a love for all those in society. Our legals system is there to protect us from henious individuals who menace society, not to torture them for our own sadistic satisfaction. If we merely revisit their own crimes back on them, we are not just, but savage, not civilized but barbaric.

The New Soft Underbelly Of Europe
merrie
by merrie  6-23-2008    2
if Iran is able to continue a very transparent nuclear policy to its logical conclusion. Looking at Germany, then, Iran sees a country with nothing to counter the pressure of merely an implied nuclear threat. Jihadists see the linchpin of Europe, easy of access and inadvertently hospitable to operations, that will hardly punish those who fall into its hands, and that can neither accomplish on its own a flexible expeditionary response against a hostile base or sponsor, nor reply in kind to a nuclear strike. Thus the German government should be especially nervous about cargos trucked overland from the east. For its own protection, and thus that of Europe, Germany could more closely integrate and where appropriate reintegrate itself into the expeditionary and nuclear retaliatory structures of the U.S., Britain, and France, without moving nuclear weapons forward to German soil; embrace limited missile defense against potentially nuclear-armed Iranian IRBMs

Need more state funds? Release some convicts
deusdiabolus
by deusdiabolus  5-6-2008
While I agree that early release for non-violent offenses such as possession is a great idea, clearly there's a problem if it costs that much to house criminals - many of whom will be less able to fit into regular society when they are released.
