Ahmadinejad accepts Israel's right to exist
zasel
by zasel  9-30-2008    9
Iran's president finally opens himself to the possibility of recognizing Israel's right to exist, and no one reports on it. I am no fan of this bastard, but when he makes threatening statements about Israel, his words make headlines. But when he starts to soften his stance, his words are ignored. Is this because the media is afraid to report anything positive about this man? And who are they afraid of upsetting?

US Textbooks Misrepresent Jews, Israel
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-28-2008    2
A glossary entry on the Ten Commandments describes them as "Moral laws Moses claimed to have received from the Hebrew God Yahweh on Mount Sinai." The same glossary describes the Koran as a "Holy Book of Islam containing revelations received by Muhammad from God." "All in all, there are repeated misrepresentations that cross the line into bigotry," the authors write. Wow. Talk about getting your knickers in a knot. Outrageous misrepresentations? I daren't say a word.

Of having the power and resources to enact a bold vision for the country, to set this great land on a path to a better future. Now we’re fucking broke. What the hell can I do when we’re $9 trillion in debt and got 1 billion Chinese hankering to cash their IOUs? I can’t even buy a three-fingered handjob now.”

On the terror war quagmire-a Pakistani view
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  9-19-2008    1
Terrorism is the sword of extremism, whether it is religious, ethnic or regional. Islamic fundamentalism in its present form was nurtured by the absence of democratic rule in the Muslim world; the short-sighted and exploitative terms of engagement employed by the western powers to deal with Muslim majority countries, which included support to dictatorships, monarchies and oppressive rules; economic injustice meted out to the majority of the population in collaboration with comprador local elite and western corporations; and finally the issue of Palestine and the sentiment it broods across the Muslim world.

The Balfour Declaration and the Mandate Under the League of Nations
merrie
by merrie  9-6-2008    1
........ The Jewish Connection To The Land ...... We consider Palestine as part of Arab Syria, as it has never been separated from it at any time. We are connected with it by national, religious, linguistic, natural, economic, and geographical bonds." The purpose of post-World War I's League of Nations was to prepare those liberated from the Turks for independence. Once the indigenous populations demonstrated their ability to assume control, the mandates given to the war's victorious superpowers were supposed to be self-terminating. For the international community, justice for the Arabs meant guaranteeing their economic, civil, and religious rights. Awarding the Arabs any form of self-government within Palestine was precluded by British commitments to the Jews under the Balfour Declaration, which had been incorporated in the mandate of the League of Nations.

NBC Olympics Web Site Awards West Bank to “Palestine”
merrie
by merrie  8-17-2008    1
Today's Reuters story about Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's peace offer to the Palestinians gets wrong the basic history of Palestine. Under the proposal, Israel would return to the Palestinians some 92.7 percent of the occupied West Bank, plus all of the Gaza Strip In fact, it is impossible to "return" West Bank land to the Palestinians, as they never were the sovereigns of this territory. http://blog.camera.org/archives/2008/08/updated_reuters_rewrites_ruler.html Before 1967, when the West Bank came into Israeli hands, the territory was ruled (and annexed) by Jordan. Prior to that, it was under British rule. Before that, it was Ottoman territory. The Egyptians ruled for some time, as did the Mamluks, the Crusaders, Arab Caliphs, and a number of other ancient empires. But the Palestinians are not on this list. So while the West Bank could technically "return" to Jordanian or British sovereignty, it could not, however, return to Palestinian sovereignty.

Israel's Front-Line Thugs
jklugman
by jklugman  8-8-2008    3
The security forces are, of course, by no means scared to act when it suits them. Palestinian demonstrations are routinely put down with excessive force: rocks flung by pre-teens are countered with rubber bullets, tear gas, and – often – live and indiscriminate fire. But when it comes to clamping down on violence emanating from the settler community, a different set of rules apply, and the authorities' reeking hypocrisy is exposed as endemic to the way in which they view the different strands of Israeli society. Israeli Settlers Increase Violence Against Palestinians
klippety

The levels of violence are on the increase in the illegally occupied settlements and there seems to be a message there. The "Apartheid" is real and the Israeli system of law does not provide for equal justice.
