"Forget a two-state solution"

Palestinians must have right of return and Jewish presence in occupied territories grows 3X faster than Israel itself. The mix is here to stay. Only a single, democratic, secular, multi-cultural state can protect the rights of all.

Water Policy in Israel and Palestine - There's Enough Water for Both
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  4-16-2008    5
The increasing difficulties with water availability, concludes the hydrogeologist, result from Israel using the majority of water resources for agricultural purposes, although this sector today represents a very small portion of the Israeli economy. Despite this, the Israeli state remains unswervingly committed to the Zionist foundation myth, which regards the promotion of agriculture as a central tenet in the Jewish settlement of Palestine. Messerschmid, in turn, sees the priorities of Israeli water policies as fundamentally flawed, leading to a wasteful use of the precious resource. Large areas of land, for instance, are still intensively watered even during conditions of very high temperatures, although most of the water immediately evaporates. The Palestinians, by contrast, do not even have the amount of water at their disposal that was promised in the Israeli-Palestinian peace treaty. Deutsche Fassung

The Problem With Bush's "Unconscionable Historical And Moral Lapse"
merrie
by merrie  1-14-2008    3
Robert Spencer, one of the nation’s leading critics on Islam, says President Bush experienced "an unconscionable historical and moral lapse" when he recently called for an end to what he called the "occupation" of Arab land by the Israeli military. The Islam critic says it is interesting there were no calls for a Palestinian state when the same territory was occupied by Egypt and Jordan prior to 1967. http://www.britannica.com/eb/topic-91061/Camp-David-Accords

Felicia Langer - a Jewish advocate against the oppression of the Palestinian people
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  12-19-2007    1
Her tireless and unrelenting commitment made her the target of attacks from fellow Israelis who could not understand that her actions against oppression and discrimination were basically in the interest of the Israeli people. Early on she had predicted violent reactions against the ongoing occupation. Therefore the outbreak of the first intifada did not surprise her. As her work and endeavours became more and more fruitless, she closed down her office in 1990 in protest to make public that the legal system in Israel had become a farce. She emigrated to Germany. Her main concern has always been a just and fair peace agreement between Israel and Palestine, and for this goal she is still as active as before, writing books and articles, giving interviews and lectures etc. In March 2005, Felicia Langer was awarded with the "Erich-Mühsam-Prize" for her continuous struggle for the human rights of the Palestinian people.

Peace Talks To Begin As Illegal Settlements Continue to Grow
zasel
by zasel  11-29-2007
I personally do not understand how peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians can be fruitful as long as illegal settlements continue to expand, and new settlements are developed. Until Israel decides to stop construction and expansion on these settlements, there will no reason for the Palestinians to really trust the intent of the Israeli government.

Israel-Palestine Peace & the language of violence

The US & Hamas: No good choices left
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  6-15-2007    11
Rather than fighting against Hamas, the US must move to draw them into the mainstream. The Hamas government would have collapsed anyway long ago if it were not for the groundswell of support that rose as the US and Israel moved to crush it. The harder we fight against Hamas, the stronger they will become. It will confirm our status as imperialists in the eyes of the Palestinians, and will turn Hamas into heroic underdogs. Depleted by senseless wars and indefensible foreign policy, the US may well be entering a new age: one where we may have to respect the soveriegnty of other countries, even if we don't like their politics. Will the Bush Administration realize this or simply push bullishly farther down a road which leads nowhere but to failure and violence? Our foreign policy is empowering our enemies.

THE MEXICAN STANDOFF BETWEEN PALESTINE AND ISRAEL
snowdancer76
by snowdancer76  3-29-2007
Well, I say that if Palestine is expected to recognize Israel that Israel should recognize Palestine and the borders set forth by the United Nations in 1948. Also, if Palestine is expected to adhere to previously negotiated agreements, then Israel should also agree to adhere to previously negotiated agreements. Then, I think the Hamas half of the Palestinian government might be more influenced by the Fatah half of the government to renounce terrorism. And that should be the main goal: to stop terrorism. One hand always washes the other. It is like me saying I won't sign a paper if you won't and you saying you won't if I won't...hence the Mexican standoff. But the difference is that I (I being Israel) am rich and you (you being Palestine) are poor. Now I have a rich friend with nuclear weapons (the U.S.) and you have rich friends too but they don't have nuclear weapons...yet. Get the picture?

ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT AT HEART OF MID-EAST PROBLEMS
snowdancer76
by snowdancer76  3-29-2007
Well, the truth is out! Should the United States continue to support (along with Israel) a blockade on food, etc. to the starving displaced people of Palestine or not? Or should we finally "recognize" that the Palestinians would "recognize" Israel's right to exist if Israel would "recognize" Palestine's right to exist? After all, they already do exist! In fact, Palestine existed for approximately 2000 yrs. before 1948 when they were suddenly displaced. And what about that 1967 border? It went right through the middle of Jerusalem, giving Israel the west side (West Bank) and Palestine the east side (East Bank). Maybe both sides should realize that compromize is the way to go. There will NEVER be peace unless someone gives in on that issue and I have a feeling it won't be the Arabs. And what about what is best for the citizens of the U.S.? Shouldn't we think of ourselves? Shouldn't we do anything possible to encourage good U.S.-Arab relations? Or should we just keep on dying?

It's Worth Trying
snowdancer76
by snowdancer76  3-20-2007
Yes, I agree that Israel should at least try to attend peace talks again between the new Palestinian government, if for no other reason than for the sake of the lives of their children and all our children. After all, Israel has moved far beyond all borders set for it into Palestinian territory with tragic consequences. Israel has a right to exist and as does Palestine. And, I believe that is would go a long long way toward ending at least some of the violence in the Middle East if the Israli government would just agree to at least attend peace talks with the new Palestinian government. And, not only that, Israel should stop their construction within Palestinian territories, its assassinations and arrests in the West Bank (Palestinian territory), and it's roadblocks and chokehold on the Palestinian economy which is leading to more poverty and hunger within Palestine which in turn just naturally leads to more violence and hatred.

Thank You, Jimmy Carter
gingembre
by gingembre  1-16-2007    33
Don't let the right-wing propaganda machines convince you that Carter is anti-Semitic when he is not! More from Rabbi Lerner: "In an interview...in the January issue of Tikkun magazine, Carter points out that he is “not referring to racism as a basis for Israeli policy in the West Bank, but rather the desire of a minority of Israelis to occupy, confiscate and colonize Palestinian land.” To enforce that occupation of Palestinian land, Israel has built in the West Bank separate roads for Jewish settlers and Palestinians, built separate school systems, has totally different allocations of money, water, food and security for each population, wildly privileging the Jewish settlers and discriminating against the Palestinians whose families have lived there for centuries." "What Carter is arguing is that the best interests of Israel and the United States are not served by the current policies."
