Ancient Climate Change May Portend Toasty Future
bookchick49
by bookchick49  12-20-2006    1
With a continuation of current trends in the use of coal, oil, and gas, natural background atmospheric CO2 concentrations are expected to double around mid-century. The ancient emissions are comparable to the CO2 that can be expected from human activity over the coming few centuries. If human-induced carbon emissions continue unabated, there could be a similar shift in species evolution.

Climate Change: Similar to 55 million years ago?
kmcolo
by kmcolo  12-10-2006
Still unresolved after many years of study is climate sensitivity, how much climate warms with a given increase in CO2. It is generally given a range between 1.5 and 4.5 degrees C for a doubling form pre-industrial concentrations with a most likely value of around 3 deg C. This article points out that recent findings about a warm period 55 million years ago seem to suggest that the higher end sensitivity seems possible. This would mean that there is more warming in store for us if it is true.

Earth is now on a fast track to global warming

We short circuited the carbon cycle by burning fossil fuels. That said, we may also be able to short circuit the carbon cycle with engineered solutions to the problem. In other words, there is hope here.
