Geologists: Collier Glacier is shrinking.
pokkets
by pokkets  10-23-2007
The Oregon glacier used to advance and recede. now it just recedes. There is the rise in temperature, but also the lack of water that prevents it from advancing. You Know the long hot summer has arrived, when the ground warms up. Too warm for glaciers.

Paleo-virus impact on AIDS infection
kmcolo
by kmcolo  6-23-2007
Immunity from a multi-million year old virus is helping to increase AIDS infection today. This fits in with an area of thought that sees infection by different agents in an ecological way. There is an understanding that we are regularly infected with the common cold not just because it undergoes these relatively minor mutations from season to season but because there is an evolutionary advantage to not getting full and permanent immunity. Namely the common cold out competes nastier more virulent infections thus it is to our advantage that if we are to get sick, we get sick with the cold virus rather than the other, worse ones.

Paleo-climate: Aasynchronicity or how the whole globe warmed.
kmcolo
by kmcolo  6-12-2006
The debate (not on current global warming) on whether there was asynchronous warming at the end of the last glacial is being clarified in favor of those that say the globe warmed as one (with a pocket of cooling in the N. Atlantic).

Earth is now on a fast track to global warming
kmcolo
by kmcolo  2-17-2006    2
We short circuited the carbon cycle by burning fossil fuels. That said, we may also be able to short circuit the carbon cycle with engineered solutions to the problem. In other words, there is hope here.
