Obama Rejects Afghanistan-Vietnam Comparison
drummond1999
by drummond1999  9-15-2009
Obama does not believe that comparisons between Afghanistan and Vietnam are accurate, for his sake, I hope he is right. Meanwhile the recent move to increase tariffs of Chinese tire imports may lead to tit-for-tat from either side. Though finally Obama believes that there is no need for any further economic stimulus packages, the worst is over.

The Presidency and The Constitution
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  6-5-2009    2
But all that protects the Constitution is the oath we swear to it. After decades of manipulation and mischief, we are getting a preview of what a post-constitutional government would look like: the Supreme Court makes policy, the White House takes over industries, the Treasury Department and IMF appropriate taxpayers dollars, and elected representatives divest their powers to unelected judges and bureaucrats. The dangers of our experiment in extra-constitutional politics are nearing a critical mass.

Obama's "Public" Health Plan Will Bankrupt the Nation
merrie
by merrie  5-30-2009    8
Not only will Obama's health program cost at least twice as much as his $650 billion estimate, but his original plan to fund the program by auctioning off carbon-emissions warrants (through the misbegotten cap-and-trade system) has fallen through. In an attempt to buy off hundreds of energy, industrial, and other companies, the White House is now going to give away those carbon-cap-emissions trading warrants. So all those revenues are out the window. Fictitious. Anyway, the cap-and-tax system won't pass Congress. The science is wrong. The economics are root-canal austerity -- Malthusian limits to growth. And there are too many oil and coal senators who will vote against it. So private enterprise can coexist with public health care and not be crowded out by the heavy-handed overreach of government. But the Obama Democrats are determined to force through a state-run system that will bankrupt the country.

Rage Against the Art Gene
balthazarus
by balthazarus  4-1-2009
On the other hand: Stephen Jay Gould. Until his death in 2002, he stood as one of the great champions and evangelists of science, as well as one of the most exacting critics of its tendency to overreach. According to Gould, life's history needs to be understood not just as the result of natural forces explicable by science, but also of contingency: strange, unplanned events that change the course of everything that follows. The arts, likewise, may be one of the many adaptively useless byproducts of a complex brain that evolved to perform other tasks. something rings false in the overriding impression created by evolutionary esthetics: that a mental trait is ennobled when we supply it with Darwinian roots. Gould, the self-described "naturalist by profession, and a humanist at heart," knew the opposite to be true. An interesting debate, one that surely is only beginning as we enter this era of progress...

Close Guantanamo, Yes. Prosecute the Detainees, Absolutely
spirithiker
by spirithiker  1-21-2009
Don’t let this ‘symbol of mismanagement and overreach’ become the making of another symbol. That being that in the rush to cleanse ourselves of the atrocities of the Bush administration we allow terrorists to go free. Jamil Dakwar, a representative for the American Civil Liberties Union at the base, said the ACLU believes all charges against the prisoners should be dropped. Jamil Dakwar is a moron. Why should Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the confessed organizer of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, go free after his responsibility in killing over 3,000 Americans? This is the major problem I have with the ACLU. They would rather Americans ‘forgive’ him his murderous actions by turning the other cheek, to allow him and terrorists like him to strike that cheek as well. The ACLU needs to balance its pursuit of the protection of human rights for the living with demanding justice for the victims of people like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Oct.29, 2008 Obama: "One Week Until We Change America"
merrie
by merrie  10-29-2008    3
If Obama were merely talking about changing our priorities, or changing our politics, or changing direction, he would stick to saying those things. But to speak of changing America is going not to a tailor but a surgeon, expressing a desire for an alteration not to the clothes, but to the wearer. Taken with recent revelations about Obama's desire to redistribute wealth, it becomes pretty obvious that, as is a defining characteristic of liberals, he wants to throw away the baby with the bathwater and do away with the economic system that made America the most powerful country in the world, replacing it with a system that purports ensure social and economic justice. w/t Mona Charen, and Terrestrial Musings agrees.

Ron Paul and Why the Bailout Should Make You Afraid, Very Afraid
lifecyce1898
by lifecyce1898  9-25-2008
I keep reading about how the alternative to the bailout would be much worse. I keep hearing this “we are helping main street” narrative from the supporters of the bailout. To me this is hogwash. Ron Paul said it best yesterday on CNN when he said that without the bailout we’d “have a bad year” but with the bailouts it “will be a bad decade”. I’m afraid, very afraid that Ron Paul is right again.

"World needs a vacation from USA"
syncopath
by syncopath  9-24-2008    5
He called for immediate technology transfer from the West to the Third World, to allow development based on clean technology — stressing the need to “reject intellectual property rights”. funds should not be distributed through the World Bank, which was trying to regain legitimacy by portraying itself as a “climate bank” while continuing to push fossil-fuel-driven development. Confronting global poverty and climate change means confronting US power. “I don’t think the world needs US leadership”, he said. “They should be more humble.” Whether the US achieves its goals “is where we, as civil society come in”, Bello said, suggesting that, by making intervention costly for the US, civil society could encourage a “new US isolationism”. The struggle is, he stressed, global. “The world needs a vacation from the messaianism of the US … A few decades of a self-absorbed US would be very good for the world.”

Presidential Power and the Bush Administration

“If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy”. -- James Madison Highly recommended video or transcript of a recent Journal interview regarding Executive power in the Bush administration, but which also applies historically to both parties. Very important! IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO EVALUATE ANY PRESIDENT APART FROM THE CONSTITUTION WHICH LIMITS EXECUTIVE POWER AND HAS BEEN THE CENTER OF CONTROVERSY AROUND THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

Has Our Government Lost Its Mind Completely?
zasel
by zasel  4-9-2007    7
This is where the hysteria caused by government overreach begins to infringe on individual and constitutional rights. I certainly believe that all reasonable actions should be employed to keep us safe, but common sense and decency has to be considered in doing so. The terrorism watch list should not be used to discriminate or intimidate people who voice opposing opinions from our government, or who participate on peace marches. Hell, aren't these two of the rights we are claiming to be fighting to protect in our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? The Bushies and neo-cons have gone hog wild and they just decided that their own beliefs permits them to use the Constitution as toilet paper.
