POPSCollective village offers new hope to Russian orphans In our mission congregation at Klipfontein View one woman has been trained in caring for abandoned children, of whom there are plenty in the vicinity, and it would be good to have something like Kitezh village... unfortunately there isn't enough money to set it up.

POPSGetting To Know You "My guess is that most voters don’t see John McCain as an angry candidate, despite several very public lapses. The mythical John McCain is an affable, straight-talking, moderately conservative war hero who is an expert on foreign policy. Barack Obama is not the only candidate the voters need to know more about. " Back in 2007, a reporter asked McCain if he supported U.S. funded distribution of condoms in Africa to fight HIV transmission. McCain had a long series of awkward pauses and glances and later his press secretary said that the senator has a record of voting against using government money to finance the distribution of condoms. My question is this: What kind of a moderate, what kind of a mind, what kind of a human being, opposes the provision of condoms to save lives--in a region where 1 million died of AIDS in 2005 alone, leaving 12 million orphans and where some (cont)

POPS$7 in Africa will... I can't clip the video, so please go to the main page and watch. A young mother came for help for her baby named Alikho (which means "No Hope"). She changed his name to Lelethu, which means "Jesus is our hope." Seriously, how heartbreaking that she had named her baby Alikho.

POPS1-child policy has exceptions after China quake Though commonly called a one-child policy, the rules offer a welter of exceptions and loopholes, some of them put into practice because of widespread opposition to the limits. For example, in large parts of rural China, most families are allowed a second-child, especially if the first was a girl. Local officials often have wide discretion on enforcement, a fact that has made the policy susceptible to corruption. Many Chinese have shown interest in adopting earthquake orphans, and Monday's announcement says there are no limits on the number of earthquake orphans a family can adopt. The adoptions, or even a future birth to a family that adopts an orphan, will not face the limitations of the one-child policy. Officials estimated last week that the quake left about 4,000 orphans, but they warned they would make every effort to connect children with other family members.

POPSActing Globally, Living Locally: Nurse Visits Over 60 Countries Simin Marefat, an unstoppable nurse: For almost 10 years, wherever she went, she saw enormous need and a huge deficit of resources around the globe from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan to Chile, Argentina, Peru and Bolivia. She organized a benefit in 2006 that raised $14,000: the proceeds helped Orphans of Rwanda to build a health clinic at Gisimba Memorial Center. She visited the clinic in June 2007 to see that the children all have health cards with their pictures and vaccinations and medications. They have a nurse who provides for them. She then organized a second benefit which raised $18,000: the proceeds will cover tuition for 34 Orphans of Rwanda to go to school. Fleeing Iran, her family arrived in the United States in 1986 to Hays, Kansas. It was that odyssey, beginning with escape, displacement, discrimination and eventual acceptance, Marefat says, that taught her anything was possible.

POPSAre today's adults scared of kids?
The conclusion the authors draw is that the solution is an increase in structured activities. They propose that all secondary-school children should be forced to participate in at least two hours of structured extracurricular activities per week, with parents who refuse to sanction this being fined. Ignoring the authoritarian aspect of this proposal for a moment, it is wrong to assume that this will do anything to overcome the problems of crime and behaviour in society, even if some kids do benefit from such activity. This proposal not only does nothing to solve the problem of the disconnection between adults and children, it makes it worse. It not only ignores the wider problem of deactivated adults, but potentially further endorses the existing belief that relating to other people’s children is not the business of other adults but of experts. It also endorses the notion that young people who are out unsupervised are a potential problem, or at least they will be in the future - thu

POPSThe Power Of Unreasonable People Today the most remarkable young people are the social entrepreneurs, those who see a problem in society and roll up their sleeves to address it in new ways. Bill Drayton, the chief executive of an organization called Ashoka that supports social entrepreneurs, likes to say that such people neither hand out fish nor teach people to fish; their aim is to revolutionize the fishing industry. If that sounds insanely ambitious, it is. John Elkington and Pamela Hartigan title their new book on social entrepreneurs “The Power of Unreasonable People.”

POPSDreaming of a White House Xmas Electrodes and thumb screws he's flung on his back, And he looks like a psychopath, poised to attack. But a wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Assured all those present they had nothing to dread. We've erased all evidence, he said with delight, While our tortures continue, late into the night. The stump of an infant he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. And I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
