POPSQuestioning the Executive Physical's Value All of the big hospitals these days offer executive physicals -- comprehensive medical exams geared toward keeping companies' C-suiters in tip top shape. But ,in an article in The New England Journal of Medicine this week, Dr. Brian Rank with HealthPartners Medical Group and Clinics of Minnesota argues that they're bad for health care. As the Chicago Tribune's Judith Graham highlights in her blog (the article itself is not open to the public online), Rank points out that more, costlier exams are not necessarily better for people. Given how many Americans are uninsured or struggling to afford basic health-care expenses, these extravagant physicals are also a waste of resources that could be spent on much-needed preventive services. I wonder how far this argument will go with top executives, though, who can opt for one of these physicals annually, usually at no cost to them?

POPSIts hard work protecting your personal data. Did you fill out the Opt Out form? Did you make a copy? Do you know if they honored it? Can you hold them responsible if they "lose" or sell your data? Its not just about them selling a product and you buying it anymore. Its about how much profit they can glean from that purchase. You dont even have to buy anything! They still get to use your data and not pay you for it.

POPSFlickr has Porn
As a Flickr member I can opt out of seeing pictures by people who post nude or pornigraphic pictures...but I wonder, who else is looking at them? Should I worry that my granddaughter who is 13 years old may mosey on into one of these porn sites on what I thought was mostly used for sharing family photos, like new babies, picnics in the park and pictures you took during vacation....I also know that some pictures of children are being stolen and used in ads or blogs....I found one of my pictures of my 3 day old grandson on a wordpress.org blog where they talk about having cancer. You can imagine my shock, when I saw his picture displayed (he was yawning and if you didn't know it, he looked more like he was crying in pain)....Evidently the author was trying to lure readers who want to see someone (in this case babies) suffering and in pain...I immediately set the picture to private...when I last checked the image was gone, but my name over it is still there, with a link to my Flickr

POPSMr. Gore, Stop Speaking For The American People! But as I stated, the capper in the ad is the claim that it has been “approved” by “the American people.” Mr. Gore and his worker bees are attempting to co-opt 320 million Americans in their quest to demand what they cannot deliver themselves. He’s using $300 million to fund his efforts. Does that say something about what Mr. Gore might gain from the group’s demands? It seems simple to me. How about you?

POPSPelosi Delivers Americans Her Poison Bill
This is the only plan that would allow the American taxpayers to receive the full $2.6 trillion in lease payments, royalties and corporate taxes that some estimate will be generated from full exploration of the OCS. But the all-of-the-above plan does not end there. It also opens up the 10.3 billion barrels of oil estimated to be in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A 2007 study by the University of California estimated that leases and royalties from ANWR would generate $251 billion in government and state revenue — and that was assuming a barrel of oil cost $53. Oil opens at $102 a barrel today. Alternative energy is not ignored either. The Republican plan also attempts to improve energy conservation with tax credits for businesses and families who purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles. Barriers to the revival of the nuclear power industry are removed, and the tax credits for renewable energy (including but not limited to wind, solar and hydrogen) are part of the plan.

POPSMcCain's Ad was factual Obama may have voted for the law because he was told that it was meant to protect kindergartners from inappropriate touching but the law was about much more. Parents could opt out with a written objection but why the heck should we be teaching kids about condoms and the clap.

POPSOn the US search for Bin Laden and Pakistan Pashtuns suffered heavy casualties in the bombing campaign of 2001. They resent the recent Predator attacks that are resulting in civilian casualties. As a result, the $25 million reward on Osama’s head has failed to elicit cooperation leading to the capture of the Al Qaeda leader.

POPSIf People Paid More Attention This Wouldn't Be An Issue I can feel for the people in this story who were charged large fees for overdrafts of their accounts - but I can only feel so much. To me, this problem is mainly due to people trying to pass responsibility for themselves and their actions onto someone else. If you know you're close to being out of money in your account, you should be paying more attention to your balance - you should actually be doing this anyway. If you paid more attention, you'd know how much you had to spend, and wouldn't spend more than that. It's that simple people. Now I can understand the issue with banks forcing you into overdraft protection and not allowing you to opt out. It should be optional. But as for the fees themselves - it's an individual's responsibility to understand their accounts, know what they have available to them, and only spent what they have. Getting upset is just failing to take responsibility for your actions.
