Communal Vs. Solo Fasting
Hana Alberts
by Hana Alberts  10-8-2008
This op-ed from the Guardian is about fasting for Ramadan, which ended last week, but it's applicable to Yom Kippur, which is on Thursday. Which do you prefer -- fasting alone or fasting communally? When I fast, individual reflection and self-discipline are important...but more than anything, I like to feel like I'm a part of something bigger.

Senator Jim DeMint: Should We Drill?
merrie
by merrie  9-20-2008
Palin’s Image as Anti-Earmark Champion September 12th, 2008 Republican Senator Jim DeMint rushing to her defense today in a “Wall Street Journal” op-ed. The senator joins me now. DeMint defends Palin fiscal stands September 12th, 2008 Before you could say, “Lindsey Graham,” Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint zapped an op ed to The Wall Street Journal responding to criticism of the record of GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin by Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. Writing in today’s WSJ, the Greenville senator defended the Alaska governor fiscal record as “solid and inspiring.” “She will help (GOP presidential nominee John) McCain shut down the congressional favor factory, and she has a record to prove it. Actions mean something,” DeMint said.

McCain lies on "The View" about Palin's earmarks
masbury
by masbury  9-14-2008
Insists she never requested earmarks as governor. Carly Fiorina gets rebuked by Stephanopoulos for saying the same. But "Just last March, Palin wrote an op-ed in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, explaining that her 'role at the federal level is simply to submit the most well-conceived earmark requests we can.'” And she kept every dime of the Bridge to Nowhere money.

McCain's Fannie and Freddie Connections
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-10-2008    4
In McCain's op-ed in the Journal, he and Palin wrote: For years, Congress failed to act and it is deeply troubling that what we are seeing is an exercise in crisis management rather than sound planning, and at great cost to taxpayers. We promise the American people that our administration will be different. We have long records of standing up to special interests… But McCain's own campaign staffers are those special interests, a fact that casts doubt on both McCain's hiring judgment and his ability to pursue tough reforms of Fannie and Freddie.

Mika Brzezinski Hits 'Liberal Elite' Palin Critics
merrie
by merrie  9-8-2008    2
MIKE BARNICLE: A little editorial opinion there from Mika! BRZEZINSKI: Well I'm just saying, I think there was a little veiled judgment that I don't appreciate, and I think that was incredible coming from two women that have benefited from the advances we have made and quite frankly the ability to bring our families forward and educate our children in ways that we wouldn't be able to if we didn't better ourselves. PAT BUCHANAN: This is a surprising attitude from them, isn't it? BRZEZINSKI: Thank you. BUCHANAN: Why do you think they said it in this case? Is it because Sarah Palin happens to be one of us rather than one of them? BRZEZINSKI: This is an argument Joe and I have about fairness and whether or not there are some sort of underlying unfairness when it comes to Republicans. And I just, you know, I feel it here. I'm not sure where this is coming from. It may be a woman thing.

Rob Kall's Op Ed News--Damn good info
papananook
by papananook  9-7-2008
See site for this and other good progressive stuff: By Rob Kall McCain's Offshore Drilling Approach Is Bad For America; We Need A Better, Smarter Approach Offshore drilling is a ruse to get votes-- a ruse that sells out America by leading us down the wrong path. The old saying says that only a crazy person keeps digging to get out of a hole. Well, continuing to drill for oil, as the primary solution to our energy problem is that kind of crazy. Excessive, unnecessary energy use, as we have become accustomed to, is a dangerous threat to our national security.

WaPo's Colbert King Implies PUMAs Are Racist
merrie
by merrie  8-30-2008    6
A Suicidal Choice for Clinton Supporters: Colbert I. King: Op-Ed Columnist Her reversal in fortunes was stunning. She lost her front-runner status in the Iowa snows, and she didn't see it coming. And yet, through pure grit and with a single-minded focus on winning, Hillary Clinton nearly pulled it off. So there is a rawness to her defeat, a feeling that Obama snatched what didn't belong to him, a belief that she was horribly mistreated in the process. The anger of some Clinton supporters over her defeat and what they perceive as her snubbing for a spot on the Democratic ticket may be clouding their judgment. So what's drawing Hillary Clinton's die-hard fans to John McCain? Is the attraction only skin-deep? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/29/AR2008082902891.html?sub=AR

Gorbachev on Georgian conflict
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  8-24-2008    2
Clips from Gorbachev's op-ed piece in NY Times Russia has long been told to simply accept the facts. Here’s the independence of Kosovo for you. Here’s the abrogation of the Antiballistic Missile Treaty, and the American decision to place missile defenses in neighboring countries. Here’s the unending expansion of NATO. All of these moves have been set against the backdrop of sweet talk about partnership. Why would anyone put up with such a charade? There is much talk now in the United States about rethinking relations with Russia. One thing that should definitely be rethought: the habit of talking to Russia in a condescending way, without regard for its positions and interests.

Voight Ignites A Blog Storm In Hollywood
merrie
by merrie  8-9-2008
If I were a producer and I had to make a casting decision about hiring Voight or some older actor who hadn't pissed me off with an idiotic Washington Times op-ed piece, I might very well say to myself, ‘Voight? Let him eat cake.'" Voight seemed particularly taken aback by Wells’ blog postings, which many have interpreted as a call for blacklisting the actor. “It’s out of line to insinuate that we should blacklist people for speaking their minds,” Voight told Politico. “It’s a strange thing when people in this country can’t express their opinions without being attacked.” Voight also told Politico that his op-ed “speaks for itself” and he didn’t have much interest in getting on a soapbox or becoming a poster boy for right-wing Hollywood. “Listen,” he said, “I don’t want to make a big deal out of this. I made some very strong points, and you do expect that people are going to respond to it in a variety of ways. And that’s how it should be.”

Dinosaur Media March Deeper Into The Tar Pit
merrie
by merrie  7-21-2008
Barry O is on his preemptive victory lap around the world and he steadfastly refuses to take questions from the foreign press. I wonder why? it's not like he isn't great reading off a prompter ?off the cuff?answering tough questions right? What would our media say if it was the Maverick dodging tough questions? I kinda doubt they would let it slide, but the Obama slinks along unmolested by any serious scrutiny from our self-selected watchdogs of the Fourth Estate. It is refreshing as a member of the newest type of new media to know that every day the solons of the liberal e-light who make up the dinosaur media march ever deeper into the tar pit.
