I think there is a huge difference between "social networking" and using social sites to show how "cool" you are and troll for dates & relationships. Teenagers who are not "networking" for a business related reason have no business NOT having their online activities supervised...because teens have poor impulse control, poor self esteem issues, and can be easily swayed to do ridiculous things just because some stranger thinks they are "hot". Should Facebook & MySpace be banned at libraries for teens? Perhaps yes...for everyone, perhaps not.

POPSSettlement in NY lawsuit over NBC's 'Predator' What interest me in The predator series also makes me wonder if it is a set up. maybe we have been overzealous in trying to prosecute every person who ever chat in such site. I never doubt some of them is guilty but you still cannot prosecute someone for chating. I have a friend in college who once got so drunk and went on Greyhound. He accidentally brushed against a little girl. The parents screamed MOLESTATION and a MOP formed and beat the shit out of him. The police came and threw him in county jail for 5 days . It took another 2 years of legal fighting to clear his name before every charges was dropped.

POPS'To Catch a Predator' producer sues NBC I recently saw the "To Catch a Predator" shows on NBC's website (blame it on my inner-voyeur, OK?). I got the sense that a large proportion of the men they snagged were harmless and would unlikely be able to seduce a real 13-year old. Only a few of the "predators" seemed really dangerous. I also thought it was a shame that Chris Hansen would waste his talents confronting & interrogating these pathetic men instead of going after the powerful.

POPSTaking preschoolers on predator patrol This is a great idea, I just hope it works. They really need to find a way to protect preteens & early teens though, they are really the most at risk. They often have "freedoms" that younger kids do not such as traveling to friends homes down the street, to & from school, some are even left home alone as early at 11 years old... They also are often left alone at computers, etc. Not sure how you educate kids at that age...
