POPSIcecast hosting
Streaming media and internet radio hosting is one of the top leisure pursuits users have resorted to turn their hobby into a fully fledged online media portal. Being launched a decade ago, there has been a significant rise in shoutcast listeners worldwide. The average number of listeners fluctuates at around 600,000 during peak hours according to shoutcast’s statistics. For those wishing to set up their own shoutcast servers the opportunities are endless. However, setting up a high quality but low cost shoutcast hosting server would be a daunting task for many first time broadcasters. Bad enough that any financial institution is using traffic tracking (congratulations to PayPal - they don't), but IBEW Plus is to support local labor unions, particularly the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (ref: http://www.ibewlu357.com/). If you don't know, all U.S. labor unions strongly support "buy American" policies, so why are they using a U.K. company that is apparently based in Budapest, Hungary? The fact that they apparently teamed up with Yahoo a few years back most assuredly doesn't make me any more comfortable. Why the hell does my financial institution need to know what site I was on last, or where I went afterward. They get more than enough of that information from my credit cards. Our online security is endangered enough without adding third parties in

POPSInfographic delight: Indianapolis Museum visualized Refreshing use of technology in the arts/social arena. The Indianapolis Museum uses an enterprise dashboard to visualize vital stats normally buried in paper. E.g. amount of energy consumed per day visits: online/offline, average duration, member/casual/students, etc. artworks: new acquisitions, on loan, most visited, etc. gardening activity: new blooms, H2O consumption, etc Loved the 3rd grader stat. :)

POPSFirst Online EMBL PhD Symposium The First Online EMBL PhD Symposium is a bold experiment in online collaboration. Why have a conference tied to a geographical location when your effort is global? Ok, besides getting drunk together, why have a fixed location? EMBL is trying to see if you can hob nobs and find out about the latest news in a purely virtual environment (probably second life and/or a wiki setting) and push the science forward.
