POPSNot Again!!! Another blackout hits Rio. Not nearly as big as the other one, but as the article below indicates, not a good sign for a city that wants to host the Olympic games.

POPSXXVIII Olympic Games in Athens 5 other bronze medals were netted by tracksters Simeon Toribio and Miguel White; and boxers Jose "Cely" Villanueva, Lepoldo Serantes and Roel Velasco. 3 other Filipino athletes have also won medals, but only in demonstration/exhibition sports. Arianne Cerdena won the gold medal in ladies' bowling during the 1988 Seoul Olympics, while Stephen Fernandez and Bea Lucero each got a bronze in taekwondo during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

POPSIn April, 2008, Obama Says Bush Should Boycott Olympics If.... What goes around comes around.... I guess Candidate Obama told Bush to use the Olympics' opening ceremony as a diplomatic pressure point against the Chinese. Wasn't it Bush that got Chicago on the short list to begin with? The Olympic committee isn't going to give President Obama a chance to take his own advice in 2016..

POPS Chicago’s “Good Times” Canceled: DynOmite! All I have to say is, where the hell were our international protocol and intelligence teams? Why didn’t someone over at the State Department tell us about this Danish policy before we put everything on the line to bring the Olympic games to the capital of Pay-To-Play cities? We just assumed that we would be treated to the same fawning adulation and deference we get in the USA: the country that invented free speech. We arrived with soaring expectations, only to have the whole thing blow up in our face. Thanks, State, once again. I’m beginning to think that Hillary didn’t really want that job. Insults are under threat in many countries. The World Press Freedom Committee earlier this year published a survey, "The Right to Offend, Shock or Disturb," which details how laws against insults are being used to squelch free speech, including opposition to the government. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748704471504574451712299324476.html

POPSOlympic Flashback: '02 Salt Lake Games Tainted By Scandal, Bribery and Glenn Beck's Church
Almost as soon as Romney took the job, however, the Mormon Church's role in the Games became a source of contention - a dispute exacerbated by Romney's request for an additional $8 million in loaned property and cash from the church, among other contributions. Utah's wealthiest businessman, Jon Huntsman Sr., the father of Utah's current governor, assailed Romney for exploiting his ties to the church. Huntsman himself is prominent in the Mormon Church, which is officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. ''We've got a chairman who is active LDS, now we've got a present CEO who is active LDS,'' Huntsman was quoted in the Salt Lake Tribune as saying of Garff and Romney. ''They claim they're going out really scour the world to find the best person, and Mitt brings in one of his cronies to be the COO. Another broken promise. Because we've got three LDS folks who are all cronies. Cronyism at its peak. ..... These are not the Mormon Games.'

POPSDanes Explain Why Obama Failed I don't quite see it exactly as the article expresses it. The people I have talked to, don't see it as Obama failing, as much as America in general, failing. Obama's (USA's) appearance here left many with a sense, that America somehow felt entitled to get the games, merely because they wanted them. Now they seem "in shock" because their wishes weren't accommodated, obviously disregarding the fact that Rio deserved to win. I am very happy on behalf of Rio and I think they're gonna put on a hell of a show. .:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGfJ0_KMiro

POPS The Machine’s Hail Mary Pass The event was a success in that the most countries ever participated, in that it made money, and in that the Soviet Union’s absence was hardly missed. But Los Angeles’ people " not its government " shared the spotlight. Will that be the case in Mayor Daley’s and President Obama’s Chicago? Finally, it will cost a lot of money. Whether private enterprise turns it into a net positive remains to be seen. One thing is for certain: it could have been much less risky. And both Obama and Daley know it. As Air Force One made its trek over the Atlantic, maybe Obama thought back nine years ago, when he voted “yes” in the Illinois Senate on renovating Soldier Field. The project cost more $600 million dollars, and the state and city were left with an open-air stadium with 6,000 fewer seats and a smaller playing field than before. The state could have paid for a larger stadium with a dome that could be used to host more than a handful of events a year.

POPSChicago's loss: Is passport control to blame? Sounds far more plausible to me than claims that Michelle Obama was being "like Marie Antoinette". More: The exchange underscores what tourism officials here have been saying for years about the sometimes rigorous entry process for foreigners, which they see as a deterrent to tourism. Once the news came out that Chicago lost its Olympic bid, the U.S. Travel Association didn’t miss an opportunity to point that out, sending out a critical press release within hours.… International travel to the U.S. declined by 10 percent in the first quarter of 2009 according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. To lure visitors back, U.S. Travel has been pushing the Travel Promotion Act, which recently was passed in the Senate and is awaiting action in the House, to create a campaign to strengthen the image of the United States abroad.

POPSMSNBC-Face This Music! TheObamasArrogant! Oprah pushed and shoved her way through events yesterday in a pumpkin orange dress, spending just a few minutes gracing IOC members with her presence, then whisking away to private events where she could be adored in a more intimate setting. While the MSM in America indulges these two, the rest of the world doesn’t buy into any of that.

POPSWhite House Blogs About Glenn Beck Regardless, let's look at some of the carping and whining: RHETORIC: BECK SAID VANCOUVER LOST $1 BILLION WHEN IT "HAD THE OLYMPICS." Glenn Beck said, "Vancouver lost, how much was it? they lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics." REALITY: VANCOUVER'S OLYMPICS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2010. Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games from February 12 " 28, 2010 and March 12-21, 2010, respectively. Yes, Beck was clearly in error about when the Vancouver Olympics will be held. However, his point about that city's financial problems as a result was nevertheless valid and relevant as it pertains to the question about Chicago getting the Olympics in 2016. As the Vancouver Sun reported in January: The City of Vancouver's liabilities to construction of the 2010 Olympic Athletes Village may cost it its favourable credit rating with Standard & Poor's

POPS"Girl From Ipanema": Plenty Time To Get Toned and Tanned And I have a sneaking suspicion that after the hobnobbing is done, the IOC members will check their gift bags, look at the boxset of DVDs from Obama … Anyway, Obama probably just thinks this a fun, feel-good sideshow, stepping up for the home team. Doesn’t seem like that big a deal. What he probably hasn’t figured out is that, taken with a health-care failure, an Iran debacle, bucking the generals on Afghanistan, and that climate change thing that has “health-care redux” written all over it, being dissed by the IOC is going to make him look like an Olympic-sized loser. Can’t get anything done. Especially since the wife said it’s “gloves off” and “take no prisoners.” It’s a big gamble. This idea that you can treat not only your own top agenda items but actual serious national security concerns with less apparent interest than a big, expensive party for your hometown, and think there won’t be consequences.
