POPSi-Aroma The company has already launched a scent-producing store signage system, piloted a mobile fragrance communication system and premiered smell-enhanced movies in Japanese theaters. With the i-Aroma, a more personal olfactory experience is on the way for volunteers lucky enough to be involved in the trial

POPSSea Shepherd Announces New Antarctic" Research Project"
I love Capt. Watson's sense of Irony/sarcasm--read article to see “Australians are the most passionate whale defenders on the planet,” said Captain Watson. “Operation Waltzing Matilda will reflect our gratitude to Australia for the incredible support we have received from the people of this wonderful nation since 2005. The Steve Irwin will depart in December from Western Australia with the majority of the crew being Australians.” Kylie Herd, a Sea Shepherd crewmember from Perth attending the IWC Conference in Madeira said, “Our logo this year is modeled on the art that adorned the fighter planes of the legendary Flying Tigers who fought the Japanese Imperial forces in China. The colors of the Aboriginal and Australian flags have been incorporated into the design with the pirate kangaroo holding Neptune’s trident of justice. We intend to waltz down to the Southern Ocean to dance dangerously with the Japanese whaling fleet and we intend to unroll a Matilda full of defensive tactics

POPSPheromone Colognes Now we know for sure that the pheromones are able to incite an instinctual and automatic response in people receiving the olfactory signal.

POPS"Dinosaurs Were Airheads" continued: The analysis of the predatory dinosaurs revealed large olfactory areas, an arching airway that went from the nostrils to the throat, and many sinuses—the same cavities that give us sinus headaches. Overall, the amount of air space was much greater than the brain cavity.

POPSOlfactory Neurons Use Sophisticated Fuzzy Coding They concluded that the peripheral code combines precise coding with fuzzy, stochastic responses in which neurons show apparent unpredictability in their responses to a given odour. They now believe that fuzzy coding occurs in other organisms, is translated into differing degrees of activation in the brain, and forms a key component of odour recognition in the first stages of olfactory processing. Dr McCrohan explains: “The nose gives us insight into the brain - it’s not a computer, it’s not precise, it’s fuzzy. This may be a consequence of way the receptors are built and must be used in some way as part of the process by which the brain perceives an almost infinite variety of odours.

POPSDecoding the sense of smell In future work, the team plans to work with researchers worldwide, including MIT's Media Lab and Department of Biology, to develop a portable microfluidic device that can identify an array of different odors. Such a device could be used in medicine for the early diagnosis of certain diseases that produce distinctive odors, such as diabetes and lung, bladder and skin cancers, Zhang said. There are also a wide range of industrial applications for such a smell-based biosensing device, he said. One application i can think of is developing an antidote for smelly things, people etc.. :)

POPSNemo's nose helps find way home They discovered some of the scents that attracted the clown fish to to the reefs that provide a suitable habitat. The scent from the leaves of one coastal plant Xanthostemon, a kind of myrtle attracted them. They also found scents, such as the leaves from the Melaleuca Nervosa, a kind of paperbark which is another type of myrtle, that repelled them. They say this could have implications regarding tree planting and reforestation near marine habitats.

POPSThe Nose, an Emotional Time Machine Importantly, the olfactory cortex is embedded within the brain’s limbic system and amygdala, where emotions are born and emotional memories stored. That’s why smells, feelings and memories become so easily and intimately entangled

POPSStinky behavior What's offending he olfactory nerves of Marina Mahathir? the article also raises interesting behaviors of the Malaysian male (and the males of other societies as well, Unspun supposes) when it comes to women. In Hokkien they are called low heow, in Indonesian they are called om om genit, and they refer to a certain type of male that get their kicks from being totally lewd, unctuous and reprehensible when it comes to their behavior toward women. They like to touch, pass suggestive remarks, grope...you wonder what goes on in their minds. Do they think that they are so desirable that the women would respond? Do they feel macho because they can do all those things to women? Aren't they even midly sensitive to what stupid fools they make themselves out to be?

POPSScientists discover secret sex nerve Couples who have high levels of chemicals in common are more likely to encounter fertility issues, miscarriage and infidelity. The more dissimilar you and your partner’s chemical makeup, the better chance you will have at successfully procreating and staying together. So how can you create the scent which will keep you and your partner in the land of happily ever after? Unfortunately, you can’t. Perfumes and colognes can’t fool Nerve “O” — the scents which humans and animals are attracted to are intangible and instinctive. Even the most expensive designer perfume can’t fool Mother Nature. When it comes to sexual attraction, it seems you really have to leave things in the air!
