The underground world of “neuroenhancing” drugs
taoguide
by taoguide  4-24-2009    1
But it’s not the mind-expanding sixties anymore. Every era, it seems, has its own defining drug. Neuroenhancers are perfectly suited for the anxiety of white-collar competition in a floundering economy. And they have a synergistic relationship with our multiplying digital technologies: the more gadgets we own, the more distracted we become, and the more we need help in order to focus. The experience that neuroenhancement offers is not, for the most part, about opening the doors of perception, or about breaking the bonds of the self, or about experiencing a surge of genius. It’s about squeezing out an extra few hours to finish those sales figures when you’d really rather collapse into bed; getting a B instead of a B-minus on the final exam in a lecture class where you spent half your time texting; cramming for the G.R.E.s at night, because the information-industry job you got after college turned out to be deadening. Neuroenhancers don’t offer freedom. Rather, they facilitate a pinched,

The SECRET Warehouse from Indiana Jones with contents
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-30-2008    1
I use a similar concept in a role playing game. This was a HUGE list and hard to pare down to 1000 characters and have to skip some hilarious items like: Two strange electronic devices, found with a set of identifcation for "Commander Pavel Chekov, Starfleet." A heave metal box, 75cm on a side, painted in military green. Each side has the words, "This side towards enemy" printed on it. (Nuclear claymore mine) The "magic gun" that fired the "magic bullet" that killed JFK A large stone tablet, reconstructed from pieces, with writing on it. It is Hebrew and has Commandments 11 through 17 Microscope slide labelled "Turin Shroud section No. 325", with piece of material reading "Made In Korea" in tiny letters Snake Plisken's death certificate A searchlight with the sillouette of a bat on it and Universal Solvent (we think) (bring your own container) (hurry) (never mind...) A great and funny list

Another move into retail, Dell
acesomeone
by acesomeone  10-22-2007
Dell gear is sturdy stuff, but as of late, the online sales model has become the culprit of Dell's previous success. It is indeed so that consumers like to see and feel their investment, prior to definitively leaping into a sale, so it's no more than logical to move to retail again. Ordering online has its benefits, but lagging deliveries certain overshadow all.

Guerrilla Office Tactics
knslyr

I’ve started collecting stories — some of which may be entirely apocryphal tall tales — of the purported lengths to which people are going to filter noise and to ensure that their time and attention aren’t ceded to bad ideas, thoughtless people, or garden-variety time burglars.

Eye-Tracking Device Lets Billboards Know When You Look at Them
haraya
by haraya  6-17-2007    3
to the office colleague who might wait in your doorway to establish eye contact before interrupting. "Eye contact is used to negotiate attention, and it’s fascinating how it works in humans," Vertegaal says. "We can have technology do the same thing." A phone on vibrate-mode already does something similar, but I love the dream.
