Tropical Rainfall Moving North
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  7-2-2009
"We're talking about the most prominent rainfall feature on the planet, one that many people depend on as the source of their freshwater because there is no groundwater to speak of where they live," said Julian Sachs, associate professor of oceanography at the University of Washington and lead author of the paper. "In addition many other people who live in the tropics but farther afield from the Pacific could be affected because this band of rain shapes atmospheric circulation patterns throughout the world."

Voyage to the center of the “Plastic Vortex”
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  5-25-2009    1
It has been clipped here before, but I think it is important for us to keep it in our conscience. An expedition is being put together to determine how best to remove as much of it as possible and what can be done with it once it is removed. The action of breaking down the plastic is leaching toxic chemicals into the water plus marine wildlife is eating the little toxic pieces. "The real fix is back on land. We need to provide the means, globally, to care for our disposable waste," said Jim Dufour, a senior engineer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, who is advising the trip.

Scientists worldwide admit global warming is a hoax
kmcolo
by kmcolo  4-1-2009    4
More: Not all scientists were fooled by Mr. Gore’s ruse, but many remained silent nonetheless. The Associated Press quotes an anonymous marine biologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who says she knew all along that “this climate change stuff was completely bogus.” “But I played along,” she said. “The opportunities for securing global-warming-related grant money were just too great for me to resist.” “Sweet, sweet grant money,” she added.

The Greenhouse Gas That Nobody Knew
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  11-17-2008
It's like eating mushrooms. You would soon be dead if you ate every mushroom that you didn't know was poisonous or not. The only sensible way to eat mushrooms is to only eat those you already know are not poisonous. Intelligent beings use the precautionary principle, business and technological innovators eat any mushroom / chemical they can find with the result that they (and the rest of us) are more like to end up prematurely dead. Wise men know that innovation is deadly dangerous, and that societies which are based on it risk extinction.

Electricity Found on Saturn Moon
cakebelly
by cakebelly  10-30-2008
continues: Morente's team studied data returned from the European Space Agency's Huygens probe, which broke away from NASA's Cassini spacecraft in 2005 to become the first probe to go below Titan's clouds. (Read "Voyage to Saturn" in National Geographic magazine.) As soon as the probe entered the moon's atmosphere, a strong wind tilted the device about 30 degrees. This accidental motion enabled Huygens to detect the Earthlike electrical resonances that it otherwise would have missed, which Morente and colleagues describe their study, published in a recent issue of the journal Icarus. Jeffrey Bada, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, believes the process that allowed lightning to spark life on Earth is universal and could happen in many environments—including on Titan.

Volcanic lightning may have sparked life on Earth
Mohir
by Mohir  10-19-2008
In the classic Miller-Urey experiment, a mixture of gases and water that Miller thought were present on early Earth was heated and zapped with electricity to mimic lightning. This created five identifiable amino acids. Yet Miller tested three versions of his spark flask. One of the two lesser-know setups – the volcanic apparatus – created 22 amino acids that could be positively identified. The findings could also give clues to life on other planets. The conditions found in the volcanic spark flask could conceivably have once existed on Mars or Titan, and Bada is developing instruments that could detect tiny amounts of amino acids frozen beneath the surface of the Red Planet.

Worm-like Marine Animal Providing Fresh Clues About Human Evolution
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-19-2008    2
The human genome has only about 25 percent more genes than the amphioxus genome, according to Holland. During evolution, humans have duplicated genes for different functions. Such duplication has given humans and other vertebrates a much larger "toolkit" for making various structures that are absent in amphioxus, including cells for pigment and collagen type II-based cartilage, for example.
