He Saw It Coming
debbyski
by debbyski  8-17-2008    1
What economic developments does Roubini see on the horizon? And what does he think we should do about them? The first step, he told me in a recent conversation, is to acknowledge the extent of the problem. “We are in a recession, and denying it is nonsense,” he said. The United States, Roubini went on, will likely muddle through the crisis but will emerge from it a different nation, with a different place in the world. “Once you run current-account deficits, you depend on the kindness of strangers,” he said, pausing to let out a resigned sigh. “This might be the beginning of the end of the American empire.”

Why I Love Clipmarks
egoldstein
by egoldstein  8-9-2008    9
So, i didn't write this, I read it. It was posted by Clipmarks user onlinedesign in the "Why I Use Clipmarks" section of her profile. You can click the source link to visit her page. I wanted to clip this because it really moved me. It is exactly what i hope Clipmarks can provide for people. Knowing that we have accomplished this for some people gives me great pride and satisfaction. I could never adequately convey how impressed, inspired and grateful i am for the collective contributions of the people who share the content, thoughts, opinion, passion and perspective that gets mixed together here on clipmarks.com. I think it's truly remarkable.

This is obviously true, and that being the case, I am drawn to the conclusion that the US of A is not a democracy, a free country or anything else but a front for corporations, "Justice for sale" means corruption and greed know no bounds. The clippers here were mostly appalled at the way Dick'n'George manipulated the judicial branch, but this...........

Why commodity traders have had such an influence on the coffee market
BirdBarista
by BirdBarista  7-16-2008
A lot of the volitility and high market prices this year has been due to speculative futures trading. I had wondered why this was so influencial this year, and this article summarizes another piece in the trade press on how these markets have changed and why the market price of coffee has a lot to do with folks who have nothing to do with coffee. The original PDF is at http://www.coffeetalk.com/images/CTJun08web.pdf (BTW, I believe this applies to oil prices as well.)

New Mode Of Gene Regulation Discovered In Mammals
Silkweaver

As research advances, the more it becomes clear, that gene regulation networks are actually complex computing machines. DNA is not a mere repository of information. What's more, the newly discovered mechanism is self referential, which adds another later of complexity to gene regulation processes.

Wisconsin Group Wants Married Gays Imprisoned
Wisco
by Wisco  7-11-2008    1
This gives you an idea of how stupid these people are. In my piece Played Out , I argued that this sort of action would wind up with the law being struck down and, perhaps, even the amendment being reconsidered. Send someone to prison for this and people will see just how unjust the whole thing is. The problem with the religious right is that they have themselves convinced that people don't think they're crazy. As a result, they say crazy-assed stuff like this all the time.

Climate Democracy
merrie
by merrie  7-10-2008    2
The point is fundamental. Whether warming or cooling is beneficial depends largely on where you live. Federal control of climate is therefore inappropriate. International control, even worse. Climate democracy requires local control. If the political discussion remains national during this election season, the candidates should – at the very least – choose vice presidential running mates who favor warming: at least acknowledging that the north matters. Local climate control: how can it be done? - the facts are these. To say that climate engineering is in a pre-early stage of development is a vast understatement. There is no such thing. Governments can no more control climate globally than they can locally. We have a long, long way to go technologically before any such thing as climate democracy can become reality. Wake up and smell the crap – it’s a scam! They want to raise taxes and increase government control over earthly endeavors and you won’t get anything for it in return.

The Political Establishment and Telecom Immunity — Why It Matters
papananook
by papananook  7-7-2008
The Senate is dragging its feet because the compromise bill’s opponents — mostly Democrats — want also to punish the telecommunications companies that answered President Bush’s order for help with his illegal, warrantless wiretapping program. That is the wrong target. In the aftermath of Sept. 11, the White House directed telecommunications carriers to cooperate with its efforts to bolster intelligence gathering and surveillance — the administration’s effort to do a better job of “connecting the dots” to prevent terrorist attacks. In its review of the effort, the Senate Intelligence Committee concluded that the administration’s written requests and directives indicated that such assistance “had been authorized by the president” and that the “activities had been determined to be lawful.” We now know that they were not lawful. But the companies that followed those directives are not the ones to blame for that abuse of presidential power. Contrary to what the Nancy Soderbergs

Greek Bibliography of the 19th century
efi01
by efi01  7-2-2008    1
"The retrospective Greek national bibliography of the 19th century is a collective work, as is every ambitious bibliography project, based on the long preparatory work undertaken by distinguished scholars and obscure bibliographers. Its foundations were lain by the three-volume Greek Bibliography 1800-1863, by Dimitrios Ghinis and Valerios Mexas (Athens, Academy of Athens, 1939-1957), in combination with successive series of addenda over the same period, which were introduced by C. Th. Dimaras from the pages of the journal Eranistis (a periodical publication of the Society for the Study of the Greek Enlightenment). The work was later taken up mainly by the Tetradia Ergasias of the Institute for Neohellenic Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation."
