The Arabs Have Stopped Applauding Obama
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  11-30-2009    1
"American arms had won a decent outcome in Iraq, but Mr. Obama would not claim it—it was his predecessor's war. Vigilance had kept the American homeland safe from terrorist attacks for seven long years under his predecessors, but he could never grant Bush policies the honor and credit they deserved. He had declared Afghanistan a war of necessity, but he seems to have his eye on the road out even as he is set to announce a troop increase in an address to be delivered tomorrow."

The sleazy advocacy of a leading "liberal hawk"
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-12-2009
What Galbraith kept completely concealed all these years was that a company he formed in 2004 came to acquire a large stake in a Kurdish oil field whereby, as the NYT put it, he "stands to earn perhaps a hundred million or more dollars." In other words, he had a direct -- and vast -- financial stake in the very policies which he was publicly advocating in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and countless other American media outlets, where he was presented as an independent expert on the region. As Cobban wrote: Galbraith has never expressed any such regrets, and last November, he was openly scornful of Bush's late-term agreement to withdraw from Iraq completely. The revelation that for many years Galbraith had a quite undisclosed financial interest in the political breakup of Iraq may now further reduce the clout, and the ranks, of the remaining liberal hawks.

Thus, by virtue of his election to the presidency nearly one year ago, he believes he has the authority to establish a new paradigm to "fundamentally transform" our nation by creating "a new foundation." However, if we are a nation of laws with a national government limited by our Constitution, and, indeed, we are, then Obama has no legal authority to "transform" our government. Those who laid our constitutional foundation were very clear about its limits on government. Our Constitution's principle author, James Madison, wrote, "The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation and foreign commerce."

Dick Cheney Takes It To Obama on National Security
merrie
by merrie  10-22-2009    1
It appears that Obama’s dissenters are piling on his back. As a result, the foreign policy hawks and neocons are making a successful comeback. We all witnessed how capable and successful Cheney was when he took his case to the airwaves, TV shows, and editorials in defending the Bush administration’s legacy. It is beyond dispute that Cheney can make a convincing case and draw a sharp contrast between the Obama administration on what it takes to secure America and defends its interests. As more and more Americans see President Obama as indecisive in making his decision in Afghanistan, even as his commanders on the ground request direct action and troop increases, the more this type of onslaught will sink him further in the polls and erode what little is left of his political capital and public confidence. Now Pakistan - Sequential Destruction of Muslim Nations
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-21-2009    1
Many Western policymakers rarely see Muslim nations, including allies, with any inherent respect. Vice President Dick Cheney described the Muslim world as "brute and nasty." Obama advisers, though more guarded in their word choices, see Muslim nations no differently. The idea that Islam is inherently violent, openly expressed during the Bush administration, continues to animate foreign policy. The White House holds a new President but Congressional leadership and Washington policymakers are more or less the same. Anti-Islamic policies of warfare and destabilization are intact.

based on those beliefs and hatreds. Starting from a position of Germany's military weakness in the early 1930s, Hitler not only built up Germany's war-making potential, he did so in ways that minimized the danger that his potential victims would match his military build-up with their own. He said whatever soothing words they wanted to hear that would spare them the cost of military deterrence and the pain of contemplating another war. He played some of the most highly educated people of his time for fools-- not only foreign political leaders but also members of the intelligentsia. The editor of The Times of London filtered out reports that his own foreign correspondents in Germany sent him about the evils and dangers of the Nazis. In the United States, W.E.B. Du Bois-- with a Ph.D. from Harvard-- said that dictatorship in Germany was "absolutely necessary to get the state in order." In an age when facts seem to carry less weight than the visions of

Obama: Less State Secrets
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  9-23-2009
In the Bush Era many bad policies (torture, secret prisons, wiretappings, etc.) were covered up by being declared "state secrets." In a few court cases in the new Obama Administration, this was still the case because that was still the way the law, administrative procedure was. Now it's changed. No more easy covering up of wrongdoing by declaring it is a "secret." The new procedures certainly require more justice and more review.

New Israeli "Pretenses for Peace," Announced
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  8-5-2009
This is a rather ruthless, cynical and cold view of the announced intent to "restart." Israeli-Palestinian, Middle East peace negotiations next month. "Restarting this carousel first begins with the old tune: The Israeli's say the Arabs must make concessions. They ask for these concessions while publicly and actively evicting Palestinian, and expanding their Jewish settlements into former Arab territory. Then the chorus sings: "And what about the 'problem,' of Gaza" --- or the Golan Heights or Palestinian violent resistance to oppression and invasion...all as if these are problems caused by others and nothing to do with their own policies of fascism, apartheid, collective punishment and Palestinian genocide. Now, everybody sing: "All we are saying is, give peace a chance." BUT - the "problem" of Gaza is that one and a half million people are being starved to death in front of the eyes of the world, for the last two years, due to an Israeli blockade. Stopping that woul

expropriated land as part of his socialist revolution. For Venezuela to experience a shortage of coffee is like Obama experiencing a shortage of lies. Very difficult to imagine let alone arrange. Nationalization and shortages go together in the same way that Chicago and corruption go together. Find one, find the other. Naturally Chavez refuses to take the blame for his absurd policies. Neither does Obama. In typical socialist fashion, each blames others. Critics point the finger at price and foreign exchange controls that have slowed investments in expansion and maintenance and eroded productivity. The government blames shortages on speculation by the private sector. In a nutshell this is Obama’s health care plan. Conjure up a problem in the private sector, blame it on speculating capitalists, and use both as a reason to nationalize the entire system. This is not the first time Chavez ran afoul of Economics 101. Some years back he was already sticking his semi-illiterate

Time for Obama to fire Hilary?

by foxyarse  7-24-2009
"Right now, it looks like Obama is going to be following the same policies of George W. Bush, especially on the Cuba issue. His campaign slogan should be changed to "compromise that you can believe in." He may turn out to be another mediocre president, made with the same mold as Bill Clinton. In my opinion, FDR was the last "good" Democratic Party president. Every one else has been a faithful server of corporate interests. In Honduras, his State Department, headed by Hillary, continues to obfuscate and not call what happened there a coup d'etat. That way Uncle Sam can continue to provide economic and military aid to the business oligarchy that is behind General Vazquez and his gorillas. What a great disappointment Obama is turning out to be. If he continues traveling the same path, many people will stay home on November 2012."

Bad Guys Refuse to be Charmed
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  7-23-2009    1
Obama has set a series of false notes in foreign policy by standing silently as huge crowds in Iran courageously protested a stolen election and failing to support Honduras against a Chavez-like attempt to avoid the rules of a democracy. He has not even been consistent: in the first case, he feared being characterized as the Wild “Meddling” West; in the second, he had no compunctions against major meddling. In another sense, however, he was consistent. In both cases he failed to support the people who were standing up, which makes his rhetoric in Russia still another false note.

Clip On made a comment about Liberals not defending those who would seek to oppress women so I found this clip interesting. Let me speak politics for a second. First of all, I'm not going to waste my time on those who just want to argue that their side is right vs. my side is wrong. We are in a world of shit with the economy and we all need to pull together. I love America and I want to see it do better. Many of those on the right would probably be surprised to know that I work with people who don't have the resources and I hate to say this, but I'm gonna, I basically babysit grown people. I STRESS personal responsibility, but I want to say here and now that personal responsibility is not the ONLY thing. Our society is full of complex problems. But I am confident we can pull together and solve them without constant partisan rhetoric and bickering. That solves nothing. I want to stress that I am DISGUSTED that the Obama administration policies does not involve women fleei

A Southern Baptist Easter Service? And although Westerns don't take other religions too seriously, what about the Hindus? the Buddhist? Shinto believers? Native American Tepee events? Not to mention the atheist, agnostics and others might feel left out. The nation is sinking in a swamp of attempts to promote religious wars religious based controversial issues and hosting official religious services (not just a 2-minute prayer or something) is going in the way wrong direction. One good Constitutional principle of the USA (among others) is the separation of church and state and now instead of shedding these influences politics is invaded with them and panders to them. Obama Deficit Soars Beyond Estimates
merrie
by merrie  3-29-2009    1
more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush's presidency, congressional auditors said Friday. The new Congressional Budget Office figures offered a far more dire outlook for Obama's budget than the new administration predicted just last month — a deficit $2.3 trillion worse. It's a prospect even the president's own budget director called unsustainable. By CBO's calculation, Obama's budget would generate deficits averaging almost $1 trillion a year of red ink over 2010-2019. But Obama insisted on Friday that his agenda is still on track. "What we will not cut are investments that will lead to real growth and prosperity over the long term," Obama said. "That's why our budget makes a historic commitment to comprehensive health care reform. That's why it enhances America's competitiveness by reducing our dependence on foreign oil and building a clean energy economy." Obama's $3.6 trillion budget for the 2010 fiscal year beginning Oct.1 [/quote

China Takes Aim at Dollar
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  3-25-2009    1
See previous clip: Obama’s Toxic Advisors China’s proposal may not affect the dollar in the short term, but introducing this issue now is a means of alerting the world this could become a reality. From the article: “Central banks around the world hold more U.S. dollars and dollar securities than they do assets denominated in any other individual foreign currency”. So, we are almost at the point of one world currency already. International leaders are beginning to see an advantage of having one world currency so that fluctuations in one market would not disrupt the rest of the world, as is the current situation. Moving to a reserve currency that belongs to no individual nation would make it easier for all nations to manage their economies better, because it would give the reserve-currency nations more freedom to shift monetary policy and exchange rates. It could also be the basis for a more equitable way of financing the IMF. Russia made a similar proposal just this month
