POPSCheney Caught in Plame Game? 72 Times "Can't Recall" Liar with selective memory--Remember this was about the vindictive and illegal outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame for Ambassador (and her husband) Joe Wilson's NY Times editorial article contradicting the lies of "yellow cake" uranium from Niger to Saddam Hussein to "prove" WMD and launch a war. Among the most basic questions for Cheney in the Plame probe: How did Libby find out that the wife of Bush administration war critic Joseph Wilson worked at the CIA? Libby's own handwritten notes suggest Libby found out from Cheney. When Libby discovered Cheney's reference to Plame and the CIA in his notes - notes that Libby knew he would soon have to turn over to the FBI - the chief of staff went to the vice president Transcripts plus more from CREW's lawsuit here.

POPSAfghanistan - NOT a 'good war' "And of course, it is costing the people of Afghanistan more than anyone. Perhaps one of the most jolting things about watching the film is seeing image after terrible image of civilian suffering: desperate families mired in refugee camps, pain-stricken schoolgirls attacked with acid by the resurgent Taliban, countless injured men, women and children who are the "collateral damage" from errant U.S. bomb strikes. It is a punch-to-the-gut reminder of just how sanitized this war -- which Obama has always called the "right front" of the so-called war on terror -- has been".

POPSPatriot Act Excesses What the NY TIMES also says in this editorial is that "The issue has never been whether the government should vigorously pursue terrorists;no responsible person is suggesting that. The question is what powers the government really needs and how best to balance them with the rights and liberties on which this nation was founded."

POPSWith No Fanfare, Senate Hits ACORN, Again Amazing: NY Times Still Almost Totally Ignores ACORN Scandals One may have thought it impossible for the nation's largest and most influential newspaper to virtually ignore the scandals involving the left-wing housing activist group The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, more notoriously known as ACORN. POPSMSNBC Primetime Ignores Terror Plot Reported by Nets, CNN, FNC
Friday, September 24, Hardball, read by correspondent Christina Brown: "Terror suspect Najibullah Zazi is back in New York. He was flown from Colorado to a detention facility in Brooklyn to face charges of conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction on U.S. soil." By contrast, FNC's The O'Reilly Factor mentioned the story twice during the past week, while Special Report with Bret Baier mentioned it three times -- on September 18, 21, and 25. CNN's Campbell Brown covered the story even more aggressively, as the story received attention on her show on September 16, 18, 21, 22, 24, and 25. News of the plot also ran a few times on Anderson Cooper 360 and on Lou Dobbs Tonight. ABC's World News with Charles Gibson, the CBS Evening News, and the NBC Nightly News all ran several reports on the story over the past two weeks. Below is the complete transcript of one such story which aired on the NBC Nightly News on Monday, September 21: By Brad Wilmouth Sept. 28, 2009

POPSIs Your Newspaper Covering It?–––ACORN Corruption at the Local Level
Some interesting items not being covered in the investigative report are the links between the WFP and ACORN, and even certain names mentioned in the article which clearly show ties with the organization. The WFP has been shown to be nothing more than a front for ACORN and its radical policies. Why? RedState has demonstrated that the WFP was founded by key members of ACORN, and shares many of its political strategies. The WFP lists ACORN as an affiliate program directly on their Web site. Roger Stone calls the New York Working Families Party "one of ACORN's most successful projects". The New York Post analyzes the many shady dealings of the WFP, and its affiliation with ACORN. Yet a simple review of the above material demonstrates that these fraudulent ballot allegations may have been orchestrated by a higher entity - namely, ACORN. Seemingly just as strange, is that a quick look into the history of one of the key components in the story, Karen Scharff, shows a . . .

POPS Najibullah Zazi Indicted in Terror Plot
NYPD raids in Queens last week turned up nine backpacks and cell phones, raising fears of a potential attack in the city's sprawling subway system. Authorities withheld the targets of the plot. But sources had told the Daily News that Zazi did computer searches involving baseball stadiums - and carried maps of other New York venues on his computer. Whatever the target, "Zazi took substantial steps toward carrying out the plan," according to a government memorandum demanding his immediate incarceration. The feds painted the bearded Zazi, 24, as a mad bomber whipping up batches of lethal explosives over a stove inside an Aurora, Colo., hotel suite. While inside the suite on Sept. 6-7, Zazi tried several times to reach an unidentified individual "seeking \ correct mixture of ingredients to make explosives," a government memorandum said. "Each communication \ more urgent in tone than the last." Traces of bomb-making material were discovered in a vent .

POPS President Interdum Fidelis Let's include the stated reason for the review: Obama is shocked - shocked! - to learn that there is corruption in Karzai's government: But the Afghan presidential elections, widely marred by allegations of fraud, undermined the administration’s confidence that it had a reliable partner in President Hamid Karzai. Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden already had raised doubts about Mr. Karzai, which were only exacerbated by the fear that even if he emerges from a runoff election, he will have little credibility with his own people. “A counterinsurgency strategy can only work if you have a credible and legitimate Afghan partner. That’s in doubt now,” said Bruce O. Riedel, who led the administration’s strategy review of Afghanistan and Pakistan earlier this year. “Part of the reason you are seeing a hesitancy to jump deeper into the pool is that they are looking to see if they can make lemonade out of the lemons we got from the Afghan election.”

POPSACORN Comes Under Closer Scrutiny In New York
or loan counseling services. That may be where you would hope the money goes, but they don't specifically set out how monies should be spent when dividing up member items in the state budget. The New York Times finally ran one of its reporters out to discuss the developing situation with ACORN, but he focuses on the partisanship of those pushing the videos and avoids serious scrutiny of the discussion of illegal activities on the videos. The fact is that ACORN hires people with a certain moral and ethical flexibility that allows them to slip right into these kinds of conversations with the greatest of ease. They had no problem discussing how to avoid legal entanglements for running child prostitution rings, brothels, and other illegal activities out of properties purchased with ACORN's assistance. What that suggests is that ACORN training is far from okay. It suggests a serious breakdown of procedures, and a failure of oversight. It also suggests that the organization . . .

POPS It’s A Complex, Complex, Complex World Along with the Predator strikes on compounds full of women and children, it should be good for a while. Knock on wood. Maguire, snarking cruelly, suggests Obama “will have to try harder to make the case that his current approach will keep America safe.” I dunno, he seems to have been handed a free throw. At least for now, absent, you know … The WaPo Takes Cheney's Side On Enhanced Interrogation by Tom McGuire WaPo sidles up to Dick Cheney. . . Let's just go back in time to the summer of 2008 when Scott Shane of the NY Times covered a lot of this ground. It appears that Obama will have to try harder to make the case that his current approach will keep America safe. right now all interrogations must comply with the Army Field Manual; Obama has a group still studying the belly slap, annoying rock and roll, walling, sleep deprivation, and the waterboard. I stand by my guess that when he thinks no one is looking Obama will re-instate everything except

POPSDem Potpourri: Obamacare, Kennedy and Bush-Era Torture
August 25, 2009 Shifting The Conversation To Thicker Ice Obama rallies his base by trying to shift the national conversation to Bush-era torture. Glenn Greenwald, a sometime consultant to the ACLU, reminds us of the depth of his commitment to civil liberties as he discusses the newly-released CIA Inspector General report on enhanced interrogation: What every American should be made to learn about the IG Torture Report ...Before saying anything about the implications of this Report, I want to post some excerpts of what CIA interrogators did. Every American should be forced to read and learn this in order to know what was done in their names . . . "Forced" to learn this stuff? I will defend to the death the right of every American to grill hotdogs and watch a ball game while tuning this news out. In another incident a guard racked a handgun and spun up a power drill near a hooded detainee. Geez, are we holding hardened terrorists or . .
