Carly Fiorina Enters California Senate Race to Unseat Barbara Boxer
merrie
by merrie  11-5-2009    1
I feel absolutely great and I am raring to go." True to her word, she wasted no time going directly after Boxer. "Sometimes I wonder whether California even has two U.S. Senators," Fiorina said. "There's Dianne Feinstein and then there's...what's her name?" Fiorina charged that during Boxer's 17 years in Washington, she had passed only three pieces of legislation and written two fiction novels. "What do you say we work together to give Barbara Boxer the chance next year to be a full-time novelist?" The Boxer campaign responded immediately to the assertion that Boxer had not produced meaningful legislation in the Senate. "Fiorina is just plain wrong about the Boxer record. More than 1,000 of Senator Boxer's provisions have been adopted and enacted into law," the campaign said in a statement. During a question and answer session following her speech, Fiorina was asked if she favors term limits. Yes, she said, she favors them and believes Boxer demonstrates why limits

"Truth to Power" by Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  11-1-2009    3
He came; he saw; he stimulated: “If you accept the premise, and I do, that the United States is the most powerful country in the world, then Barack Obama is the most powerful writer since Julius Caesar. That has to be good for American artists.” I suppose so. He could invade somewhere and force the natives to accept degrading roles in NEA-funded performance art. He could take out the Iranian nuclear program by carpet-bombing it with unreadable literary novels. That is, if you “accept the premise” that the United States is the most powerful country in the world. Rocco Landesman may, but it’s not clear, from his actions (or inactions) in Eastern Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, that the president does. But, even so, it seems an odd pitch to “American artists.” Rocco Landesman, Speaking Goof to Power, isn’t the first Obama groupie to enjoy the kinky frisson of groveling obsequiousness, but he’s set an impressive new standard in public revelation thereof.

National Novel Writing Month (2009)
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-25-2009    2
What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time. Who: You! We can't do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let's write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together. Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work. When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

What is "rape culture"?
Lexica
by Lexica  10-13-2009    3
Click through for the whole thing. More: Rape culture is treating straight sexuality as the norm. Rape culture is lumping queer sexuality into nonconsensual sexual practices like pedophilia and bestiality… Rape culture is rape being used as a weapon, a tool of war and genocide and oppression. Rape culture is rape being used as a corrective to "cure" queer women. Rape culture is a militarized culture and "the natural product of all wars, everywhere, at all times, in all forms." Rape culture is 1 in 33 men being sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. Rape culture is encouraging men to use the language of rape to establish dominance over one another ("I'll make you my bitch")… Rape culture is 1 in 6 women being sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. Rape culture is not even talking about the reality that many women are sexually assaulted multiple times in their lives. Rape culture is the way in which the constant threat of sexual assault affects women's daily movements.

Horray! Nawal el Saadawi Returns to Egypt
zizzy
by zizzy  9-24-2009
I haven't seen any of her books at Al Diwan Bookstore since I've returned to Egypt. She is no fan of Pres. Barack Obama. “I’m against the capitalist, patriarchal, racist system that is ruling America and Europe, and is ruling us also, but that doesn’t mean I’m a communist. I’m a critic of the communist thought as well as all religions, as nothing is holy for me, Dr el Saadawi said. Sheikh Youssef el Badri, a radical cleric in Egypt, said that a law office was considering how to pursue Dr el Saadawi legally, now that she is back. “I have to chase her legally because she transgressed God in her books and interviews ... She has insulted Islam, the religion of one-third of the world’s population. “People like her, who are attacking religion, will encourage other people to become daring on God and Islam. We are not trying to take revenge, we’re hoping to lead her back to the right path.".

Amish Romance Novels Are A Hot New Genre
merrie
by merrie  9-9-2009    1
The explosion of Amish fiction has drawn mixed reactions within Amish communities. Emma Smoker, 39, who was selling homemade pies -- apple, blueberry and shoofly -- in front of Rachel's, said the books don't interest her. "I live the Amish life -- I don't need to read about it," said Mrs. Smoker, who is the sister of store owner Rachel Esh. From what her friends tell her, she added, the books "aren't quite true to life." While there are no religious strictures against contemporary novels, the church has traditionally viewed fiction as distracting and deceitful, says Donald Kraybill, a senior fellow at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, a religious studies center at Elizabethtown College. Some Amish have nevertheless become avid fans. An Amish woman in Lancaster told Ms. Lewis that "all the women in our church district are reading your books under the covers, literally," Ms. Lewis said. Ms. Brunstetter, who lives in Tacoma, Wash., said several Amish families

John Scalzi's guide to the most epic FAILs in Star Wars Design
Lexica
by Lexica  8-20-2009
More: Bad design in Star Wars is not just limited to stuff; evolution here seems wacky, too. Three choice bits: Sarlaac A monstrous yet immobile creature who lives in an exposed pit in the middle of a lifeless desert, waiting for large animals to apparently feel suicidal and trek out to throw themselves in? Yeah, not so much. Not every Sarlaac can count on an intergalactic mob boss to feed it tidbits. That Asteroid Worm Thing in Empire Strikes Back So, large space worm lives in asteroid, disguises itself as a cave and waits for unwary spaceships to fly by so it can eat them? Makes the Sarlaac look like a marvel of natural selection, it does. Midi-Chlorians Oh, man, don't get me started. Except to say this: If in fact a high concentration of midi-chlorians is the difference between being a common schmoe and being a dude who can Force Choke his enemies, the black market in midi-chlorian injections must be amazing. Star Trek fans, don't get smug: I'm going after it ne

"Author William Golding attacked girl of 15"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-15-2009
more (at source): Golding comes across as a man of deep introspection who drank heavily to sustain himself. The biography also throws new light on how Lord of the Flies, his first and most famous novel, was published after many publishers rejected it. It reveals how its editor altered it to exclude much material on the nuclear bomb and changed the character of Simon, one of the British schoolboys marooned on an island after a plane crash, from being too explicitly Christlike. However, it is Golding’s attitude to women in his unpublished Men, Women & Now, which will cause most surprise in literary circles. He had met Dora when both were taking music lessons in Marlborough, Wiltshire, when he was about 16 and she was 13, but he tried to rape her two years later when he was home during his first year at Oxford.
