POPSAlaska Chooses Largest Gold Mine Over Clean Water Suggest you read it all--Sarah Palin supported this minin project--ooops, there go the Salmon in that area...some more info on the "Independent" Alaskan voters: But on Aug. 26, Alaskans voted down a ballot measure that proponents had cast as crucial to the future survival of Bristol Bay salmon. Ballot measure 4, which survived a challenge that went all the way to the state Supreme Court to remain on the state's primary ballot, would have prohibited large metal mines from contaminating salmon streams and drinking water sources. Though by law the ballot measure couldn't name a specific project, everyone knew it was aimed at the proposed Pebble Mine, which if developed as planned would be North America's largest open pit gold mine, also mining copper and molybdenum (a crucial element in steel).

POPSI support Obama on Issues, not because of the Cult of Personality I don't worship Barak Obama. I don't think he's a savior, or even an angel. Although the novelty of him being a "black" president is entertaining, I don't really care about that either. (Honestly, it seems a little strange that we are so self-congratulatory over 'voting for a black man,' as if that should be really impressive somehow.) Why do I support Barak Obama? Because of all the people running for President, I believe he has the best ideas on what direction our country needs to take. I would like to see much of his platform made into reality, and because of that, I will vote for him. I don't want to waste all our time arguing of personal slights and vauge rumors. Let's get to the issues. Here is why I support Barak Obama:

POPSGeorgia is the graveyard of America's unipolar world Cont... There has been much talk among western politicians in recent days about Russia isolating itself from the international community. But unless that simply means North America and Europe, nothing could be further from the truth. While the US and British media have swung into full cold-war mode over the Georgia crisis, the rest of the world has seen it in a very different light. As Kishore Mahbubani, Singapore's former UN ambassador, observed in the Financial Times a few days ago, "most of the world is bemused by western moralising on Georgia". While the western view is that the world "should support the underdog, Georgia, against Russia ... most support Russia against the bullying west. The gap between the western narrative and the rest of the world could not be clearer." And that has the neocons scare witless!

POPSIran Buys Wheat From US For 1st time in 27 years. Capitalist Americans at work I guess. However, I hope they are charging an arm & a leg OR we are using some better bargaining chips. As Americans, we've bent over backwards to do our best to see that the *average* population does not suffer because of the policies of it's government; however....when does the benefactor say "stop biting the hand that feeds you"?

POPSOil: An Industry in Crisis? Not sure if that's the case--crisis might apply to the financial services industry right now--but it's certainly an interesting article.

POPSNew Data Shows U.S. Fertility Trends The Census Bureau released a new report on fertility in America this morning, showing some interesting results. First off, the data says that 20% of women in their early 40s were childless in 2006, twice the percentage reported in the 1970s. It also suggests that the majority of new moms have or had careers and many of them graduate or professional degrees -though it doesn't detail how many women returned to work or quit to be stay-at-home moms. In terms of state-by-state comparisons, the numbers also show that moms in D.C., Mississippi and North Carolina were the most likely to have never married.
