POPSBELARUS: "We don't have such persecution here. We're absolutely democratic" Belarus continues to harass and fine people conducting unregistered religious activity, Forum 18 News Service has found. The most recent example of this is using the Minsk City Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Committee to continue the state's long-running campaign against New Life Church in the capital Minsk. Also, two heavy fines have been imposed on a 68-year old pensioner in Grodno and a woman in Brest was fined for allowing her home to be used for unregistered worship.

POPSBill O’Reilly Meets Jon Stewart, Not Much Hilarity Ensues
This means that their discussion was quite substantive, with Stewart playing the role of the guy who wants to be a cenrist but can’t find where the center is in a world gone mad, and O’Reilly mostly concerned with defending the honour of his network as a news organization, and trying to argue that Stewart’s “cyclonic perpetual emotional machine” is only driven by a couple of guys on the network. It really does seem that this is the only criticism that stings at Fox News, which has gone out of its way to argue that its news shows are separate from its opinion shows. (I think this doesn’t really wash if you’ve watched most of their news anchors, apart from Shepard Smith. The m.o. of many Fox News anchors is to report the news in such a way as to provide talking points for the “opinion” shows. And in any case, opinion shows on cable news tend to present themselves as news sources.) The fact that Stewart is more respectful of O’Reilly than he was of Crossfire is intere

POPSSooner or later Katie, the Pay Czar cometh CBS is denying that Couric is going to get a pay cut and they say they are really happy with her performance. This sounds very hollow to me. When you read about how deep the layoffs were and realize the fact that Couric has not been able to budge CBS out of last place, you have to conclude that her $14 million salary isn’t going to last forever.

POPSObama Debated by Comedy Central on Fox News
Comedy has become news. And news covers comedy. News show satirist, John Stewart was interview on Bill O'Reilly's Fox News show. It was quoted on regular TV news this morning. (See clip). Suppose to be a comedian, many times Stewart's questions and comments get more to the core of news and the issues than most shows that think they're 'serious.' -- although all our news these days is mainly spin rather than an honest look at things. Stewart's recent comedy criticisms of President Barack Obama have even drawn Wall St. Journal opinion articles wondering if this meant the downfall of Obama's "stoned slacker supporters." (one of their routine insults). Far from it. Obama getting a fair slice of criticism is cool and what Stewart's show is all about. The difference is that Fox News is an example of critics who want to tear down the President everyday and will find any excuse to do so. So...comedy has become news. And news covers comedy. Thank God someone can be honest.

POPSBreaking: U.S. Attorney Steps Down From O’Keefe Case
The Department of Justice announced the change in a news release Monday night, but did not say why Letten wanted off the case. “James O’Keefe sat in jail for 28 hours without access to an attorney, while the U.S. attorney leaked the information about his arrest, helping the media frame it as ‘Watergate Junior,’” Breitbart said. O’Keefe declined to talk about Breitbart’s allegations on Fox News Monday night, adding he was cooperating with the U.S. attorney’s office and he was pleased with the way the U.S. attorney was handling the case. He said details of his arrest may be brought up at another time, but not now because it is an ongoing investigation. “The panty bomber on Christmas was given " you know, this guy’s from Al Qaeda, and he’s not even an American citizen, and he’s given access to an attorney right away. I believe that this was a concerted effort, this is just my opinion, to allow for the media to frame the issue to put James O’Keefe in a
