POPSGlobal Cooling Wrecking Tourism In NE
From an unfazed Associated Press The tourism season is young, so there are few statistics indicating how it’s going. In Maine, those that are available point to a rough start. In June, traffic was down 3 percent on the Maine Turnpike, and day use at state parks was down by nearly a third. There’s no sugarcoating the bitter pill in a state where "Vacationland" is on the license plates and tourism is the biggest industry, pumping $10 billion into the economy. Vaughn Stinson, chief executive officer of the Maine Tourism Association, put the damage at millions of dollars in Maine alone. POPS16 Of The World's Best Squares: Think About The Details From Mexico to Italy to Iran, these remarkable squares can inspire us all. What stands out most is that design is only a small fraction of what goes into making a great square: small details add up to great places. Historically, squares were the center of communities, and they traditionally helped shape the identity of entire cities. Like the tentacles of an octopus extending into the surrounding neighborhood, the influence of a good square (such as Union Square in New York) starts at least a block away. Any great square has a variety of smaller "places" within it to appeal to various people. The use of a square changes during the course of the day, week, and year. The streets and sidewalks around a square greatly affect its accessibility and use, as do the buildings that surround it. Any community where people want to discover the rewards of public life can make a square its centerpiece.

POPSMardi Gras in the Murder Capital The police are making a record number of arrests, about 900 a week. They're just not getting the bad guys. According to the watchdog organization Safe Streets Strong Communities, 80 percent of detainees in the parish jail are being held for non-violent offenses, mostly low-level drug and alcohol charges. Two-thirds of the city's murders go unsolved.

POPSHost a Japanese Family for Dinner That sounds awesome :) The only problem is that Sara and I don't really have room for 4 extra people for dinner... Maybe if we moved the kitchen table into the living room and put the leaf in. I'll have to start listening to japanesepod101 again and brush up, I've been lax in my studies!
