POPSThe world's fastest computers "Nearly 70 per cent faster than Roadrunner, the US Department of Energy's Jaguar, housed with Kraken at Oak Ridge National Lab, is the newly crowned fastest machine in the world. Oak Ridge houses more computing power than anywhere else on the planet. Unveiled last year, Jaguar's 181,000 cores only started work this year. Unusually for a world-beating US government-funded machine, this is a civilian computer. The Department of Energy has previously built its fastest machines, such as Roadrunner, to model nuclear explosions. Much of Jaguar's work is focused on modelling climate change and energy generation, with other basic science such as studies of the structure of water also getting a look-in."

POPSAmerica’s Hidden Treasures Been to Glacier Bay, Alaska. Beautiful. Going to Alaska will give you a new perspective on life. In some places, you have to put your sun visor down at 3:00 a.m. Or when it warms up to -35 degrees (Fahrenheit) people are outside in short sleeve shirts washing their cars. At Halloween, your costume has to fit over a snowsuit. And people drive for a mile on square tires on a -65 degree morning.

POPS20 Facts About the Brooklyn Bridge -The original toll for crossing the bridge was one penny. - There are 85,159 cubic yards of masonry in the bridge. - The bridge turned out to be a tragedy for the Roebling family. The designer, John Roebling, died from tetanus after a ferry crushed his foot as he was scouting locations for the bridge. His son, Washington Roebling, of Trenton, N.J., fell prey to the bends from his time in caissons laying the foundations for the towers, and became an invalid. Washington's wife, Emily, became the de facto head of construction in his stead. - The bedrock on the Manhattan side turned out to be much deeper than predicted, so the tower on that side of the bridge rests on sand. - The Brooklyn Bridge was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, after physically joining the island Manhattan and Long Island for 81 years. POPS NY Times Combat Embed Now is the time for the Associated Press, the national newspapers, the cable and broadcast networks and all major news organizations, if they intend to cover this conflict in any meaningful way, to embed through the swath of Afghanistan where NATO forces are actively engaged in countinsurgency operations.

POPS Living History And Sacred Soil Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin Hill, the senior enlisted adviser to Gen. David Petraeus at the U.S. Central Command in Tampa, spread soil collected from battlefields in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan during Operation Desert Storm and Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The soil often looms large not just as a blood-soaked symbol but as a defining reality for combatants, who become intimate with it. Mud of the trenches, black volcanic sands of Iwo, red laterite dirt of Vietnam. The stuff CSM Hill spread on the parade ground has an odd, musty taste when it rises up into the sky, blocks out the sun, turns the air yellow, orange, and finally blood-red around you, and inevitably ends up lining your mouth, nostrils and lungs.

POPS"Friendly Fire" ~ Obama Has A Bad Sunday . . . of the building tsunami of populist outrage. Unlike with President Bush, the Obama administration is less apt to dismiss such commentary, at least publicly, as so much carping from an out-of-touch peanut gallery. These are voices that have been sympathetic, and at times gushing toward Obama, during the campaign and in his administration’s early days. The president and his top aides read the Times closely and react quickly to its reporting and commentary.

POPSThe Other Humans For a change of pace from the political arena... This month's National Geographic has a very interesting article about the other humans who lived upon our planet, The Neanderthals. We know so little about the development of our species. Searching for information on it, will bring you many theories. Most agree though, that the human species, in one form or another have been around for a couple million years... Yet we have so little information on their evolutionary process to modern day man. Reading this very interesting article will make you acknowledge how vulnerable life is. So many species have come and gone and we have barely scratched the surface of realizing their existence. Perhaps we will never learn completely how life formed upon our planet and how we got to where we are today, but there's one fact for sure; Science will endure and will never give up its quest to bring us answers. National Geographic is a good way to keep up with new scientific discovery.

POPSWith Arlington Cemetery As a Backdrop, Judge Swears In 70 Immigrants "I did it to honor our country's warriors and to give the new citizens a sense for what makes this country great," Ellis said. The judge, known for his thorough legal opinions and an occasionally irascible demeanor, said he "didn't want any politicians" attending the ceremony. After the immigrants took their oath, Ellis greeted each one personally, choking up as he hugged a new citizen wearing a U.S. Navy uniform. He then told a woman from Iraq that he was "honored that you chose to be an American." "This is truly a wonderful day," said Ellis, his voice cracking, as he gave an emotional tribute to the virtues of citizenship, U.S. history and the warriors buried around him. "It is a wonderful day for each of you, because today you will join the land of the free and the home of the brave."
