POPSNidal Hasan Terrorist Threat 'Not That Big a Deal'....Matthew Yglesias
I think a pretty good case can be made that this kind of situation actually is the main face of the terrorist threat. Not a big well-thought-out plot centrally directed from a “safe haven” in South Asia and undertaken by brilliant covert operatives, but the desperate violent act of a clearly disturbed individual. It’s going to be very hard to prevent this sort of thing. As long as the United States remains a country in which firearms are widely available"for the foreseeable future, in other words"we’re going to be unusually vulnerable to mentally ill spree killers of various kinds, including spree killers who nod in the direction of Islamist thinking. But the larger point is that while these incidents are serious crimes and major tragedies for the victims, they hardly rise to the level of a major macro-level social crisis. They’re certainly not a first-order national security threat. And even put in the lower-stakes context of violent crime in America

POPSPublic Health Plan Covers FEW
"The public option is a significant issue, but its place in the debate is completely out of proportion to its actual importance to consumers," said Drew Altman, president of the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. "It has sucked all the oxygen out of the room and diverted attention from bread-and-butter consumer issues, such as affordable coverage and comprehensive benefits." The Democratic health care bills would extend coverage to the uninsured by providing government help with premiums and prohibiting insurers from excluding people in poor health or charging them more. But to keep from piling more on the federal deficit, most of the uninsured will have to wait until 2013 for help. Even then, many will have to pay a significant share of their own health care costs. The latest look at the public option comes from the Congressional Budget Office, the nonpartisan economic analysts for lawmakers. It found that the scaled back government plan in the House bill wouldn't overtake

POPSWorld Vision Development Foundation in the Philippines When the country was hit by typhoon Agnes in 1984, it launched a relief project that supplied food, housing materials, tools, medicines and bibles to about 25,000 affected people. Families also received loans for seed, fishing nets and new boats, and provided a food-forwork program that offered wages and tools for carpenters to help rebuild coastal homes.

POPS8 Troops Killed In Afghanistan; Remote Outposts Attacked Nuristan, bordering Pakistan, was where a militant raid on another outpost in July 2008 claimed the lives of nine American soldiers and led to allegations of negligence by their senior commanders. Army Gen. David Petraeus last week ordered a new investigation into that fighting, in which some 200 militants armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars pushed their way into the base, which is no longer operating. The region was key for Arab militants who battled alongside Afghan warriors during the 1980s U.S.-backed war against invading Russians because it is a rare place in South Asia where the Wahhabi sect of Islam is practiced – the same sect followed by Osama bin Laden and most Saudis.

POPSRed Lobster Read This - Illegals Coming Off the Menu! Red Lobster is not the only organization that profits from illegally obtained marine life that ends up on the menu but they are one of the largest seafood fast food retailers. So the price of fame - get singled out - grin. They used to say you could walk on the water on backs of cod when they were running off the coast of Maine and Massachusetts - no more. Of course they used to say that about salmon in Scotland, the Pacific Northwest, tuna off the California coast, Abalone off of California - Norte and Baja but no more. Gotta have fish three times a day since you gave up you beef or pig three times a day? Think again! Go rent the movie Soylent Green and think about it being about the world in 2020!

POPSSympathy For Devils Another episode in the “engagement” chronicles: “Since taking power nine years ago, Syrian strongman Bashar Assad has: turned his country into a safe haven and transit corridor for jihadists en route to Iraq; funneled sophisticated munitions to Hezbollah and probably Hamas; sought to build an illicit nuclear reactor with North Korean help; mostly failed to liberalize Syria’s economy and resisted liberalizing its politics; publicly declared that Israel would never ‘become a legitimate state even if the peace process is implemented’; and ruled while Syrians have been implicated by a U.N. investigator in the 2005 assassination of Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri. So, naturally, President Obama has made Syria a prime target for diplomacy as part of his new Axis of Engagement.”

POPSCharity can't do it all This is about a NFP child care center serving low income people in my home town. Because foundations are tightening their belts, the center is facing the choice to either close, raise its fees, or deal with the bureaucratic hassle of accepting federal/state funding. Child care is a damn important service for working families; that a foundation cut its funding to it so it could serve even more basic needs speaks volumes about the volunteer sector's capacity to deal with the problems of poverty US society is going to deal with. We can't just cut back on government services expecting charities and foundations to pick up the slack.

POPSNew Haven Firefighters Testifies on Judge Sotomayors Senate Hearing Sotomayor has defended the Ricci decision, saying that she and her colleagues were bound by precedent. Kyl challenged that argument, saying, You will not acknowledge that even though the Supreme Court said theres no precedent you still insist, somehow, that there was precedent there that you were bound by? Sotomayor replied that the high court choose to adopt a different test in its review of the case. Continuing Kyls questioning, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina challenged Sotomayors intent. Mr. Ricci has a story to tell, too, and the court has gone, in the opinion of many of us, into the position of societal change, he said. Identity Politics The question of identity politics has dominated the hearings all week. Do you embrace identity politics personally? Graham asked Sotomayor Thursday. Personally, as a judge, I dont embrace it in any way with respect to judging, she replied.
