Togo and Balto, Dog Heros of the “Great Race of Mercy”
merrie
by merrie  3-23-2009    4
Serum was located in Seattle and flown to Anchorage, then shipped to Nenana, but that was as far as it could go. A relay of dog teams was the answer. It took 5 1/2 days — 127 1/2 hours and 674 miles to get the needed serum to Nome. This was a trip that normally takes 3 weeks. Even though there were 20 musher teams and over 100 dogs, two dogs standout in name and fame, Balto and Togo . Balto was the lead dog of the final relay team with Gunnar Kaasen as musher. Balto was a young dog, and not a speedy racer. If Kaasen had known the storm and blizzard was so bad, he would not have chosen Balto as lead dog. There was such storms, creating new snow, and winds, creating white outs. It was often hard to see the dogs or your hands. Temperatures were often 50 degrees below zero. Balto and Kaasen and the team of dogs arrived February 1, at Safety Shelter, 21 miles from Nome, but the next driver, was sleeping, thinking Kaasen was being held up by the storm.

Dust Bowl Had Human Fingerprint

by ofcapri  3-23-2009
"The droughts in the 1950's and 1998-2004 were in many ways just as bad," Benjamin Cook of Columbia University, lead author on the study, said. "But there was less dust available, because strong regulations were put in place after the 1930's to prevent land degradation."

Absolutely Amazing Natural Phenomena #1
sahara
by sahara  12-13-2008
The collision with the winds coming from the Andes Mountains causes the storms and associated lightning, a result of electrical discharges through ionised gases, specifically the methane created by the decomposition of organic matter in the marshes. Being lighter than air, the gas rises up to the clouds, feeding the storms. Some local environmentalists hope to put the area under the protection of UNESCO, as it is an exceptional phenomenon, the greatest source of its type for regenerating the planet's ozone layer.

Weather Warfare: The Ultimate Stealth WMD is Real
blueridge
by blueridge  5-8-2008    1
Bottom quote is from U.S. Air Force. It's real. Good article, documented for the skeptics. The significant expansion in America's weather warfare arsenal, which is a priority of the Department of Defense is not a matter for debate or discussion. While, environmentalists blame the Bush administration for not having signed the Kyoto protocol, the issue of "weather warfare", namely the manipulation of weather patterns for military use is never mentioned.

Crying Wolf?
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  11-9-2007
Many people will look at this story and similar ones as proof that they somehow can't trust in science. Every day we're told of these scientists "changing their minds". Hormone therapy is bad, hormone therapy is ok. Polar bears are in danger, polar bears are doing fine. What's a person to believe? Remember people that it's not the role of science to proclaim dogma but to investigate reality and that is one complicated job. New facts are discovered every day which necessitate shifts in viewpoint. Contrary to public opinion, this is the strength of science instead of the weakness of science. We need to remind ourselves how our ability to predict the path of storms and the possibility of other natural occurring events is unimaginably complicated. Considering our track record so far I think we're doing pretty good.

United Nations Weather Control Treaty: The Climate Change Smoking Gun
yamdablam
by yamdablam  7-11-2007    1
I've told a number of people that the technology to change our weather has existed for a long long time. Their reaction is often one of disbelief. But then I show them the page I created this clip from and their opinion rapidly changes. This is simply proof that environmental modification techniques exist that can change our climate. Now, suppose you wanted to impose a global change in behavior, you could do this by changing the one thing all peoples of this earth have in common: weather. You'd stage massive PR stunts in the form of articles being published in all major newspapers throughout the world. Stage popular culture concerts, produce films, get celebrities on board to hammer home the message, place adverts on tv, get multinational corporations to have a greener slant on their products, lobby governments via NGO's such as greenpeace, ensure green political parties are elected into office...the list is endless This has all been planned along time ago.
