Are New Orleans residents perpetual victims?
tonybierman
by tonybierman  10-16-2009
At some point, aren't we all going to have to stop looking upon New Orleans' residents as perpetual victims of a natural disaster that occurred over four years ago? So far, the US has spent billions of dollars in aid and committed significant resources to the crescent city. It is becoming a bottomless pit. A rabbit hole. In stark contrast, observe how the thousands of eastern Iowa flood victims have handled their own natural disaster since 2006. You do not hear about Iowa because most Iowans are not culturally inclined to assuming the role of lifelong victims. The indigenous population of New Orleans, on the other hand, seems both intent and destined to remain forever wards of the state. At some point, New Orleans constituents will need to look inward and ask themselves whether they have any responsibility in their own recovery.

Parallels with Monsanto aren’t a coincidence. Wells, 54, spent 18 years at that company, including four years introducing modified soybeans in Brazil. ArborGen Chief Science Officer Maud Hinchee and James Mann, vice president of business development, also worked at St. Louis-based Monsanto.

Governors Oppose Federal Martial Law Powers, Invoke States' Rights
blueridge
by blueridge  8-11-2009    1
This could apply to any potential Swine Flu emergency declarations or any other federal responses during acts of terrorism, disasters, or crises whereby the Pentagon has pleaded a domestic role for power. See Clipmark U.S. Military Plans for H1N1 Flu Outbreak Good for the governors and states' rights! As a side, people should note that because Governor's have authority over each states "National Guard" that they could invoke their authority to NOT DEPLOY these troops (never intended for foreign wars) to unjust wars, or war undeclared by Congress (the only lawful wars) for foreign operations, i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. They have full legal power to resist if only they have political courage to stand upon principle against mistaken notions of zeal or "patriotism" invoked to push such wars. More on that here.

Military planning for possible H1N1 outbreak
foxyarse
by foxyarse  7-29-2009
Civilian authorities would lead any relief efforts in the event of a major outbreak, the official said. The military, as they would for a natural disaster or other significant emergency situation, could provide support and fulfill any tasks that civilian authorities could not, such as air transport or testing of large numbers of viral samples from infected patients. As a first step, Gates is being asked to sign a so-called “execution order” that would authorize the military to begin to conduct the detailed planning to execute the proposed plan. Orders to deploy actual forces would be reviewed later, depending on how much of a health threat the flu poses this fall, the officials said. Source: CNN

White House Haste - In a Hurry to Wreck the Country!
Efrain Alvarado
by Efrain Alvarado  7-24-2009    2
In all beneficial changes in the natural world...in all those changes, which are the work of an all-wise, all-seeing and superintending providence...you will find imperceptible changes; you cannot see the object move, but take your eyes from it for a while, and like the index of that clock, you can see that it has moved. The old proverb says, God works good, and always by degrees. The devil, on the other hand, is bent on mischief, and always in a hurry. He cannot stay; his object is mischief, which can best be effected suddenly, and he must be gone elsewhere.

Natural Disaster Preparedness and Management
Alderney
by Alderney  7-16-2009
ATW focuses primarily on USSD; DPW seeks wider community involvement, especially families. All programs are designed with law enforcement collaboration and approval. In many instances programs will be presented by law enforcement. USSD is taking the lead in providing these educational opportunities. Students will have the chance to improve skills and provide community safety. USSD will increase its community visibility, attract new students, and stimulate interest in activities at every USSD location.

CO2 Taxes Will Conviscate Billions In Revenue Out Of Thin Air

Cap & Trade: Political Alchemy, Economy Buster & Disaster for Poor These increased costs will include the heating and cooling of individual American households and an even greater expense will be incurred by businesses. Again, those who will suffer most from Cap & Trade legislation will be the American public. There will be higher expenses at the grocery store, at appliance dealers, hair salons, auto repair shops...it goes on and on. Every business in the United States will see its costs go up significantly, resulting in grossly accelerated inflation, a loss of thousands of jobs in the energy industry alone and other untold millions of Americans will suffer a direct financial impact because of Obama's misguided Cap & Trade legislation. THE REALITIES OF CAP & TRADE UNTESTED Perhaps the greatest misnomer regarding Cap & Trade is the idea America will quickly shift from the use of fossil fuels--like coal, natural gas and fuel oil--

Anyone Else Have FEMA Exercises in Their Town Today?
katsteevns
by katsteevns  5-6-2009
The exercise will simulate criminal activity and is designed to test and evaluate the response to a crisis situation. These incidents will not be real; however, the responses to them are intended be as realistic as possible. In all cases, every effort has been made to balance realism with safety, while still allowing the creation of an effective learning and evaluation environment. Likewise, all participating agencies have balanced their participation in this exercise with their requirements for real-world emergency response and protection. The areas where the full-scale exercise will be undertaken will be clearly marked and will have an appropriate off-limits perimeter established. Law enforcement personnel will be assigned to direct and provide safe passage for motorists while the exercise is being conducted.

Wind power is a complete disaster
amgumen
by amgumen  4-10-2009
The Ontario Power Authority advises that wind producers will be paid 13.5¢/kwh (more than twice what consumers are currently paying), even without accounting for the additional costs of interconnection, transmission and back-up generation. As the European experience confirms, this will inevitably lead to a dramatic increase in electricity costs with consequent detrimental effects on business and employment. From this perspective, the government’s promise of 55,000 new jobs is a cruel delusion. A recent detailed analysis (focusing mainly on Spain) finds that for every job created by state-funded support of renewables, particularly wind energy, 2.2 jobs are lost. Each wind industry job created cost almost $2-million in subsidies.
